Uncertainty, Social Support & Powerlessness in Mothers of Handicapped Children (장애아 어머니의 불확실성, 사회적 지지 및 무력감)

  • The purposes of this study were to measure the degree of perceived uncertainty, social support & powerlessness, to examine the relationship between the perceived uncertainty, social support & powerlessness and then to find the predictors of powerlessness in mother's of handicapped children. The subjects of this study consist of 102 mothers of handicapped children, registered at rehabilitation & handicapped children school. Data was collected from September 1998 to March 1999. The tools used in this study were Mishel's the Parents' Perception of Uncertainty Scale (28 item, 4 likert scale), Miller's Powerlessness measurement Scale(28 itewt 4 likert scale) & Cohen's Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (40 items, 4 likert scale). Data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Duncan comparison, Pearson Correlation coefficient & Stepwise multiple regression Results of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Mothers perceived their uncertainty to be slightly high(Mn 2.50). The degree of perceived uncertainty by the four components were followed as : lack of clarity(2.69), unpredictability(2.56), ambiguity(2.56) & lack of information(2.46). The degree of perceived uncertainty of the mothers of handicapped children revealed to be influenced significantly by age of children, admission experience, disability types of children. 2. The degree of mothers' powerlessness was measured to be slightly high(Mn 2.14). The degree of perceived powerlessness of the mothers with handicapped children revealed to be influenced significantly by age of children, duration of illness admission experience,8E marital status of the mothers. 3. Mothers perceived their social support to be slightly high(Mn 2.71). The degree of perceived social support revealed to be influenced significantly by sex of children, married state of mothers. 4. Mothers' uncertainty was related positively to the mothers' powerlessness(r=.33, p=.0008). And also mothers' powerlessness was related inversely to social support(r=-.50, p=.0001). But, mothers' uncertainty was not related to social support significantly. 5. To analyze the variables which affect powerlessness, stepwise regression was implemented. As a result, about 61% of the powerlessness were explained by social support, marital status of the mothers and perceived uncertainty. Based upon these results, it is recommended that the nurses, who are caring handicapped children and their families, provide various support programs for them to overcome their difficulties. Also programs which decrease the uncertainty & powerlessness used social support multidimensionally & individually are recommended to be developed.

Mother's perception for the quality criteria of day care center (보육시설의 질적 기준에 대한 어머니의 인식)

  • the purposes of this study were to ecamine mother's perception for the quality criteria of day care center, and to estimate the differences of these according to the demographic characteristics, For these purposes, the data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to 568 mothers with children enrolled in day care center be located in Taegu. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, F-test, Scheffe test, regression analysis. The major findings of this research were as follows : 1. Generally, there were significant differences in the mother's perception for the quality criteria of day care center according to the demographic characteristics. 2. Among the independent variables, mother's educational level had significant influences on the all domains of mother's perception for the quality criteria of day care center.

The Structural Relationship among Social Support, Parenting Stress, Self-perception and Parenting Behavior Perceived by Mother (어머니가 지각하는 사회적 지지와 양육스트레스, 자아인식 및 양육행동 간의 구조적 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore structural relationships among social support, parenting stress, self-perception and parenting behavior perceived by mother and provide preliminary data useful for desirable parenting behavior. For this purpose, the data of fourth wave Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC) including social support, parenting stress, self-perception and parenting behavior measured by 1,746 mothers with 3-year-old children were analyzed. We identified structural relationships among the variables using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 applying structural equation modeling. Measurement model and structure model had favorable goodness of fit and the results of structure models on each path were as follows. First, parenting behavior had positive correlations with social support and self-perception but there was a negative correlation between parenting behavior and parenting stress. Second, the relationship between social support and self-perception was mediated by parenting stress and parenting stress and self-perception mediated the relationship between social support and parenting relationship. In conclusion it is required to raise awareness about the importance of development of various parent education programs and parenting behavior.

Factors Influencing Parenting Confidence in First-time Mothers of Infants in Their First Year (초산모의 영아 양육자신감에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing parenting confidence in first-time mothers and to provide basic data for development of maternal role education programs. Method: The participants were 194 first-time mothers of babies aged 1-6 months who visited well-baby clinics in 4 hospitals. Instruments used in this study were self-reported questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The parenting confidence level was moderate with a mean score of 3.26(range 1-6). Infant temperament was significantly correlated with maternal role confidence. Maternal role confidence was significantly correlated with child-rearing environment. Infant temperament and parenting stress were significant predictors explaining 50% maternal role confidence. Conclusions: Nursing Interventions to promote parenting confidence among first-time mothers of infants in their first year are needed to improve maternal perception to infant temperament and reduce parenting stress.

An Exploratory Study on Children's Disclosure to Parents About Their Daily Activities (아동의 일상생활 경험에 대한 자발적 보고의 탐색적 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine children's disclosure to parents in different domains of their daily activities. Methods: The participants were 340 children(100 kindergarteners, 120 3rd graders and 120 6th graders in elementary school) and their mothers in Seoul and Gangwon-do, Korea. The data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA, paired t-test, and MANOVA. Results: First, 3rd graders and 6th graders experienced more daily activities than kindergarteners in most domains. Second, 3rd graders disclosed more than kindergarteners and 6th graders in most domains. The response of mothers with 3rd graders was most similar to their children's response about children's disclosure to parents. Third, the reasons for nondisclosure of children were different according to domains. The reasons for nondisclosure of children that mothers perceived were different from those of their children, especially in the school(institute)-related domain. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study indicated that the aspects of children's disclosure to parents were different according to domains of their daily activities based on developmental stages. Mothers perceived their children's disclosure differently compared to their children. The results suggest that it is necessary to approach children's disclosure to parents based on domains of daily activities and developmental stages.

Child Rearing Experience Among Mothers of Children with Severe CHD (중증 선천성 심질환 아동 어머니의 양육경험)

  • Purpose: To explore the experiences of parenting from the mothers of children with severe CHD and to develop a grounded theory about their experiences. Method: Grounded theory method guided the data collection and analysis. A purposeful sample of 16 mothers of children with severe CHD participated during the period 2003. The data were collected by semi-structured individual interviews. Results: "Raise with dignity" emerged as the core phenomenon. 'Powerlessness' came up as the central concept. The causal conditions working on powerlessness was 'living with a bomb in the heart': uncertainty and the context were 'confronting people's eyes', 'developing child's adaptability'. An intervening condition was 'forming a support system' and consequences for coping with powerlessness were 'overcome' or 'ambivalence' using the strategies for mother's positive personality, care role perception, accepting, acknowledgement, and managing the body and mind. Conclusions: In the results of this study, the mothers of children with severe CHD are continue to struggle with life during children's growth and repeated attacks of disease. They need to be provided with skills to cope with physical and mental problems in rearing the children with expertized information for the entire period of growth.

The status of parents' education and their perception for young children's safety (유아안전을 위한 부모교육의 경험 및 부모의 인식도)

  • The purpose of this study was parents' perception on young children's safety life, safety accident, and safety education and provided basic data of administrating parent education for young children's safety. Subjects of this study were 620 parents (310 fathers and 310 mothers) of young children attending at four public kindergartens and two day care centers located in C city and D county. The results of the study were as follows: First, regarding parents' perception on young children's safety life, parents thought that their perception and attitude would mostly affect young children' safety life. Second, with regard to parents' perception on safety accident, half of parents experienced such safety accident as accident during play, traffic accident, accident in dangerous places, accident from dangerous matters, accident in sport activities, fire, and electric shock. Third, most parents looked upon safety education as very important one, and fathers were more satisfied with the safety education administered by kindergartens. Fourth, with regard to parents' perception on parent education for young children's safety, most parents thought that parent education for safety would be necessary. They ranked traffic and play accidents as the most important contents of safety education.

Sexual Knowledge and Perception and Current Status of Sex Education among Parents of First and Second Grade Elementary Schoolers (초등학교 저학년 학부모의 성지식과 성교육에 대한 인식 및 실태 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify sexual knowledge and perception and current status of sex education among parents of first and second grade elementary school age children. Methods: Participants in the study were recruited from parents with a child in the lower grades and who resided in Seoul. From January 1 to February 28, 2011, data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed using McNemer test, paired t-test, ANONA, and Scheffe test. Results: Mean sexual knowledge scores for fathers and mothers were $27.74{\pm}4.94$, and $28.62{\pm}4.70$ respectively. Parent's sexual knowledge correlated with their occupation, education level, and family's monthly income. Conclusion: Study results showed that both parents are aware of the need for sex education. However, at home, mothers have a more active attitude towards sex education and conduct the education more often than fathers.
