  • Most chronic wounds persist in the inflammatory phase during wound healing due to the biofilm. Biofilms are resistant to antibiotics, weakening penetration, resistance to biocides and weakening local immune responses. The biofilm is firmly attached to the surrounding tissues and is very difficult to remove. Therefore, strategies to remove hard biofilms without damaging surrounding tissue are very important. One of possible strategies is dispersal. So many studies have been done to develop new strategies using dispersal mechanisms. In this review paper, especially chemotaxis, phage therapy, polysaccharides, various enzymes (glycosidases, proteases, and deoxyribonucleases), surfactants, dispersion signals, autoinducers, inhibitors were introduced. Combination therapies with other therapies such as antibiotic therapy were also introduced. It is expected that the possibility of treatment of chronic wound infection using the knowledge of the biofilm dispersal mechanisms presented in this paper will be higher.

  • The liquefaction is a phenomenon that the effective stress becomes zero due to the rapidly accumulated excess pore water pressure when a strong load acts on the ground for a short period of time, such as an earthquake or pile driving, resulting in the loss of the shear strength of the ground. Since the Geongju and Pohang earthquake, liquefaction brought increasing domestic attention. This liquefaction can be assessed mainly through the semi-empirical procedures proposed by Seed and Idriss (1982) and the liquefaction risk based on the penetration resistance obtained from borehole DB and SPT. However, the geotechnical information data obtained by the in-situ tests or boring information fundamentally have an issue of the representative of the target area. Therefore, this study sought to construct a ground information database by classifying and reviewing the ground information required for liquefaction assessment, and tried to solve the representative problem of the soil layer that is subject to liquefaction evaluation by performing spatial interpolation using GIS.

  • This study attempted to evaluate the water repellency and drying effectiveness of linseed oil treated-solid wood at high temperature by immersion. The moisture content of green wood (Pinus densiflora) sample (above 90%) was reduced about 10% after 6 hours treatment at 150℃. When the treated samples were cut into cross section along the length, it was observed that the linseed oil penetrated into up to 20% of the sample cross section area in all locations. However, a strength loss of the specimen was not detected. The pre-drilling before linseed oil treatment was effective in reducing the defects such as checks and splits, and improved the linseed oil penetration into all samples from the surfaces. The result of water absorption test of treated-wood showed that the water repellent efficacy of treated-wood was greater than that of the control. The anti-fungal activity of treated samples using five sap stains and thee decay fungi was not detected in broad-spectrum toxic mechanism. However, decay test using white rot fungi (Tyromyces palustris) and brown rot fungi (Trametes versicolor) showed that the treated sample has a decay resistance to these two fungi.

  • This study compares the revised method in loose saturated sandy ground where the LNG storage tank will be installed with an evaluation method by one-dimensional effective stress analysis using the UBC3D-PLM model. Various laboratory and field tests were conducted to establish the parameters necessary for evaluation. The revised liquefaction evaluation method using the seismic response analysis result and N value from standard penetration testing evaluated the possibility of liquefaction as high, but assessment using effective stress analysis, which can consider various liquefaction resistance factors, found the site to be somewhat stable against liquefaction. One-dimensional finite element analysis using UBC3D-PLM modeling facilitated easier assessment of stability against liquefaction than the other methods and minimized the area required for reinforcement against liquefaction. In addition, it is expected that two-and three-dimensional numerical analysis considering the foundation of the LNG storage tank can identify the seismic design and behavior when liquefaction occurs.

  • Salt cementation, a typical naturally-cemented phenomenon, may occur due to water evaporation under the change of climate. Capillary force may influence the distribution of cement in granular soils. This study addresses the effect of capillary force on salt cementation using five different techniques: cone penetration test, electrical conductivity measurement, photographic imaging technique, nondestructive imaging technique, and process monitoring by elastic wave. Glass beads modeling a particulate media was mixed with salt water and then dried in an oven to create the cementation condition. Experimental results show that salt cementation highly concentrates at the top of the small particle size specimens and at the middle or the bottom of the large particle specimens. The predicted capillary heights are similar to the locations of high salt concentration in the cemented specimens. Five suggested methods show that the behavior of salt-cemented granular media heavily depends on the capillary force.

  • In recent years, solid-state Li metal batteries (SSLBs) have attracted significant attention as the next-generation batteries with high energy and power densities. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth and the resulting pulverization of Li during repeated plating/stripping processes must be addressed for practical applications. Herein, we report a plastic-crystal-based polymer/ceramic composite solid electrolyte (PCCE) to resolve these issues. To fabricate the one-side ceramic-incorporated PCCE (CI-PCCE) film, a mixed precursor solution comprising plastic-crystal-based polymer (succinonitrile, SN) with garnet-structured ceramic (Li7La3Zr2O12, LLZO) particles was infused into a thin cellulose membrane, which was used as a mechanical framework, and subsequently solidified by using UV-irradiation. The CI-PCCE exhibited good flexibility and a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of over 10-3 S cm-1. The Li symmetric cell assembled with CI-PCCE provided enhanced durability against Li dendrite penetration through the solid electrolyte (SE) layer than those with LLZO-free PCCEs and exhibited long-term cycling stability (over 200 h) for Li plating/stripping. The enhanced Li+ transference number and lower interfacial resistance of CI-PCCE indicate that the ceramic-polymer composite layer in contact with the Li anode enabled the uniform distribution of Li+ flux at the interface between the Li metal and CI-PCCE, thereby promoting uniform Li plating/stripping. Consequently, the Li//LiFePO4 (LFP) full cell constructed with CI-PCCE demonstrated superior rate capability (~120 mAh g-1 at 2 C) and stable cycle performance (80% after 100 cycles) than those with ceramic-free PCCE.

  • The performance of high-early strength pavement concrete for large areas is influenced by the physical and chemical environment during service life. Generally, penetration, diffusion, and absorption of harmful materials that exist outside the concrete cause damage to its structure. Thus, we have to use a mixture for durability to keep the required quality for the planned service life. Moreover, in using high-early-strength cement and accelerators, a high heat of hydration to create the initial strength can cause cracks. Based on evaluations from optimal mix proportions of high-early-strength pavement concrete for large areas, we conducted water permeability, abrasion resistance, freeze-thaw, plastic, drying, and autogenous shrinkage tests. Test result showed that a mix of accelerator and PVA fibers showed excellent performance.

  • Modern bulletproof armor must be light and have excellent penetration resistance to ensure the mobility and safety of soldiers and military vehicles. The ballistic performance of heterogeneous structures of laminated flat plates as bulletproof armor depends on the arrangement of constituent materials for the same weight. In this study, we analyze bulletproof performance according to the stacking sequence of laminated bulletproof armor composed of Kevlar, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and ethylene-vinyl-acetate foam. A ballistic analysis was performed by colliding a 7.62 × 51 mm NATO cartridge's M80 bullet at a speed of 856 m/s with six lamination arrangements with constituent materials thicknesses of 5 mm and 6.5 mm. To evaluate the bulletproof performance, the residual speed and residual energy of the projectile that penetrated the heterogeneous laminated flat plates were measured. Simulation results confirmed that the laminated structure with a stacking sequence of Kevlar, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and ethylene-vinyl-acetate foam had the best bulletproof performance for the same weight.

  • Marine and hydraulic structures are subject to durability damage not only due to the penetration of sea water but also due to the attachment of marine organisms. Therefore, in this study, we tried to develop an antifouling coating agent with self-cleaning function for marine concrete. It was confirmed that the antifouling coating agent mixed with AKD, cellulose nanofibers and BADGE had sufficient antifouling performance at a well hydrophobicity of around 140° in contact angle and an inclination angle of 15°. In the abrasion resistance test of the surface, only a maximum loss of 0.015 g occurred. In the durability test, as a result of the chloride ion permeation test, almost no chloride ion permeation occurred in the variable where the coating agent was applied, and carbonation and freeze-thaw damage also rarely occurred, so it was analyzed that it was effective in securing durability of concrete.
