  • Background: The aim of this study was to assess detection of circulating tumor cells (CTC) using anti-CEA pre and post surgery in Chilean patients with colo-rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: The presence of CTCs was evaluated in 80 colorectal cancer patients pre and post surgery using standard immunocytochemistry and the results were compared with findings for standard clinico-pathological parameters. Results: In patients presurgery CEA (+) CTCs were frequently found, with no relation to tumor size or nodal status. After surgery, the presence of CTCs was associated with such clinico-pathological parameters. The frequency of CTC detection in node positive patients did not change after surgery. In patients with metastasis there was also no change in the frequency of CTC detection, and clusters of 3 or more CTCs were evident. Conclusions: Secondary CTCs are associated with clinico-pathological parameters only after surgical removal of the primary tumor, and might be important in identifying patients at high risk of relapse. Primary CTCs detected before surgical removal are frequently found, are not associated with the clinico-pathological parameters and might have a role in cancer screening. These findings suggest the need for studies with a larger population of patients.

  • Objective: To explore the relationship between computed tomography (CT) manifestations of thymoma and its WHO pathological classification. Methods: One hundred and five histopathologically confirmed cases were collected for their pathological and CT characteristics and results were statistically compared between different pathological types of thymoma. Results: Tumor size, shape, necrosis or cystic change, capsule integrity, invasion to the adjacent tissue, lymphadenopathy, and the presence of pleural effusion were significantly different between different pathological types of thymomas (P<0.05). Type B2, B3 tumors and thymic carcinomas were greater in size than other types. More than 50% of type B3 tumors and thymic carcinomas had a tumor size greater than 10 cm. The shape of types A, AB, and B1 tumors were mostly round or oval, whereas 75% of type B3 tumors and 85% of thymic carcinomas were irregular in shape. Necrosis or cystic change occurred in 67% of type B3 thymomas and 57% of thymic carcinomas, respectively. The respective figures for capsule destruction were 83% and 100%. Increases in the degree of malignancy were associated with increases in the incidence of surrounding tissue invasion: 33%, 75%, and 81% in type B2, type B3, and thymic carcinomas, respectively. Pleural effusion occurred in 48% of thymic carcinomas, while calcification was observed mostly in type B thymomas. Conclusions: Different pathological types of thymic epithelial tumors have different CT manifestations. Distinctive CT features of thymomas may reflect their pathological types.

  • In order to research the pathological entity of Jueyin disease in ${\ll}Shanghanlun{\gg}$, some sharing concept of three-yin-three-yang used in ${\ll}Neijing{\gg}$ and ${\ll}Shanghanlun{\gg}$ were investigated first, and then the meaning of jueyin and jueyin disease were analyzed. In cold damage disease, time-space factor is important because the pathological change is rapid and the symptoms along path are similar, therefore three-yin-three-yang having complex meaning of time and space can be used as an appropriate pathological concept. So to speak, it is able to be interpreted as various modes like variations of yin-yang, qi-blood, change of pulse condition, theories of opening, closing, pivot or exuberance and debilitation of form and qi manifested in the six districts of the human body following disease process. Jueyin is between front taiyin and rear shaoyin, and it's attribution is inherent in qi stagnation and yin exuberance in relative to the location of flank and liver. Putting together above descriptions, pathological entity of jueyin disease is that the symptoms mingled with cold and stagnant heat competing each other when a subject having qi stagnation in flank with cold in extremities and lower abdomen in particular is seized with cold influenza.

  • Background: Breast cancer is by far the most frequent cancer of women (23% of all cancers), ranking second overall when both sexes are considered together. Since there has been change in clinico-pathological factors and treatment profiles for breast cancer patients over the years, the present study to evaluate the change trends in India. Materials and Methods: A detailed analysis was carried out with respect to age, menopausal status, family history, disease stage, surgery performed, histopathology, hormone receptor status, and use of chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. Change in various clinico-pathological factors and treatments of breast cancer cases was recorded and analysed. Results: Mean age at presentation was found to be earlier in 2005-2006 compared with 1997-98 (p value: 0.046). More premenopausal women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005-2006 when this was compared with initial years of assessment (p value ${\leq}0.001$). When change in the receptor status was evaluated, we observed that there was a decrease in cases of ER and PR receptor positivity which was significant (p value: 0.007). Over the period of time, more f patients were not offered surgery initially in view of advanced disease when the two time periods were compared (p value: ${\leq}0.001$). There was a significant increase in patients who were initially offered neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in view of advanced disease at presentation (p value: ${\leq}0.001$). There was increasing number of patients who received palliative treatment for symptoms in 2005-2006 when compared to patients treated in 1997-98((p value: ${\leq}0.001$). Conclusions: Changes in mean age at presentation, premenopausal status, and stage at presentation have occurred over the years. More aggressive patterns of disease have become more common with early age at presentation and aggressive biological behaviour with receptor negative tumours.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of psychobiographical information on the attitude change toward mentally ill people. For this, 30 college students were randomly assigned to one group that received a psychobiographical information(PBI) and the other group a psycho-pathological information(PPI). Measures of attitude change were favorability, reliability, and social distance. The results were significantly different only in social distance between the two groups. Within each group, there was a significant change in favorability only in the psycho-pathological information group, and there was a significant change in the favorability, reliability and social distance in the psychobiographical information group. These results are significant in that they have empirically confirmed that a psychobiographical approach can be effective in changing attitudes toward mentally ill people.

  • Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Goihwa-san(GHS) against ulcerative colitis induced by DSS (dextran sulfate sodium). Method : The sample group was divided into three. The control group consisted of mice that were not inflammation-induced. The pathological group was composed of untreated colitis elicited mice. The experimental group was administered GHS after colitis elicitation. The effects on ulcerative colitis were evaluated by the morphological change of colonic mucosa, the anti-oxidant effect, HSP 70, NF-${\kappa}$B, COX-1, COX-2 and iNOS. Results : In terms of immunohistochemical changes, the distribution of COX-1 in mice treated with GHS increased noticeably more than that in the pathological group. The distributions of HSP70, NF-${\kappa}$B, COX-2, iNOS in mice treated with GHS more decreased than those in the pathological group. Regeneration of surface epithelial cell and goblet cell in mucosa was observed by optical microscope. The colonic lengths in GHS-treated mice were more elongated than those of DSS only treated mice. Conclusion : GHS is a candidate treatment for ulcerative colitis.

  • Diagnosis using voice is non-invasive and can be implemented through various voice recording devices; therefore, it can be used as a screening or diagnostic assistant tool for laryngeal voice disease to help clinicians. The development of artificial intelligence algorithms, such as machine learning, led by the latest deep learning technology, began with a binary classification that distinguishes normal and pathological voices; consequently, it has contributed in improving the accuracy of multi-classification to classify various types of pathological voices. However, no conclusions that can be applied in the clinical field have yet been achieved. Most studies on pathological speech classification using speech have used the continuous short vowel /ah/, which is relatively easier than using continuous or running speech. However, continuous speech has the potential to derive more accurate results as additional information can be obtained from the change in the voice signal over time. In this review, explanations of terms related to artificial intelligence research, and the latest trends in machine learning and deep learning algorithms are reviewed; furthermore, the latest research results and limitations are introduced to provide future directions for researchers.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning of Yangmingzhongfeng in the Shanghanlun. Methods :Each verse was analyzed, along with consideration of the general context of the Bianyangmingbingmaizhengbingzhi(辨陽明病脈證幷治) chapter where Yangmingzhongfeng is explained. The meaning of Yangmingzhongfeng was discussed with a focus on the intention underlying the contrast between Zhongfeng[中風] and Zhonghan[中寒] within the text. Results : In Yangming Disease, disease patterns that have mutated from other channels are differentiated as either Zhuanshu[轉屬, change of assignment] or Zhuanxi[轉繫, change of connection]. Zhuanshu refers to the situation where symptoms of the original pathological site has disappeared, therefore being assigned to Yangming. Zhuanxi refers to the before-and-after pathological sites being connected. The condition of Zhuanxi is further divided into Taiyin and Yangming, where Zhuanxi Yangming needs to be differentiated from Zhuanshu Yangming in that the cathartic method[下法] cannot be applied even with the existence of constipation, despite it being the indication for such treatment. Yangming Zhongfeng and Yangming Zhonghan are differentiated according to coldness and heat of Zhuanxi Yangming. Conclusions : Yangming Zhongfeng refers to the heat type of Zhuanxi Yangming where the person presents constipation whilst residing exterior pattern. Yangming Disease cannot be understood as having a uniform pattern of Weijiashi-constipation-Shengqitang, and its disease pattern requires a multi-dimensional approach.
