  • This study was carried out as a preliminary study to analyze the effect of parenting attitudes on the career decision-making types of middle school students. We analyzed the mediating effect of self-efficacy to develop a program that can be implemented jointly at home and at school to help middle school students who are facing the Free Semester System in 2016 to form an ideal career decision-making type. To that end, a survey was conducted with 345 students attending a middle school located in Northern Seoul, and the 335 valid questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS v22. In the sociodemographic analysis, there was no difference in parenting attitudes between groups in terms of religion and family income. The democratic attitude of parents had the greatest impact on the rational career decision-making type, while the permissive attitude had a partial effect. The authoritarian attitude had no effect. Self-efficacy had a mediating effect in only the relationship between democratic parenting attitude and the rational career decision-making type. These findings imply that to help middle school students form a rational career decision-making type, intervention in variables other than self-efficacy is necessary in addition to parent education.

The results are as follows. The factors influencing children's problem behaviors rose to 62 factors between 1990 and 2000, and 93 factors between 2000 and 2010 from total 41 factors between 1970 and 1990, which they were more than doubled after the 2000s compared with the earlier studies, subdividing children's problem behaviors. The proportion of the factors influencing children's problem behaviors showed that parents' moral thinking had the highest, and their negative thinking or emotion for children were higher than their moral thinking, which their problem behaviors were more greatly affected by parenting attitudes toward them than their own temperament or attitudes. The earlier studies were more likely to find the cause of children's problem behaviors for looking into the factors and causes influencing children's problem behaviors in terms of children's personal mental health, but there was more proportion of social environment, peer and teacher relationship while soaring family, relationship, home environment and child care center environment factors as well as children's personal factors after the 2000s. Consequently, the alternative resources or the environments of the times should be applied in other ways.

  • This study explored how young people with disabilities experience self-determination in their lives. This study employed a grounded theory approach involving 10 undergraduate students with cerebral palsy or physical disabilities, in their early 20's, and individual interviews. The experience relating self-determination of the participants seemed to start with "wanting to do things at their will as they grow up". The participants reported experiencing "yearning to attain self-actualization overcoming disabilities" in the context of "disability-related social limitation", "divided opinions between the participants and their parents", and "limitation in financial and psychological resources". The emerging strategies to attain self-actualization included "active coping", "avoiding confrontation", and "conditional acceptance". Intervening conditions to formation of the strategies included ”challenging spirits towards prejudice about disability", "autonomous tendencies", "taking the most of social support" and "parenting attitudes of their parents". In the process of seeking to attain self-actualization, these participants experienced "self-maturation" and "the sense of guilt towards their parents". The findings emerged from the study was that there are three stages in the process young people went through in self-determination. The stages consist of "perceiving their needs and obstacles for self-determination", "problem solving", and "perceiving their growth". In addition, four self-determination patterns are derived from this data: "breaking through", "multi-strategic", "moderate", and "acceptive". This study suggested some theoretical and prctical implications needed to facilitate self-determination of youth with disabilities.
