  • The differential equation, which can determine the dynamic critical loads for low parabcoic arches, is derived in this study. The dynamic critical loads of the parabolic arches subjected to a concentrated step load are nummerically analyzed for the changes of load positions. In cases of arches with different end conditions (both hinged, fixed hinged, both fixed), the effect of end conditions and that of the rises are investigated in detail. The summary of the results are the following: 1)The snapthrough does not occur when the rise of arch is very low, and the bifurcation appears clearly as the rise of arch increases. 2)The regions in which the dynamic critical loads are not defined for the both ends fixed are broader than that for the both ends hinged. 3)For all case, the load positions of minimum dynamic critical loads exsit at the near position from the end hinged. Thus, the results obtained in present study show that the magnitude of dynamic critical loads, the load positions of minimum dynamic critical loads and the regions in which the dynamic critical loads are not defined depend on end conditions of arches.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of non-circular arches with non-uniform cross-section, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated for the prime parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. Three general taper types for rectangular section are considered. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, and section ratios are considered. The agreement with results determined by means of a finite element method is good from an engineering viewpoint.

  • For determining the in-plane buckling resistance of a concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) arch, the current technical code GB50923-2013 specifies the use of an equivalent beam-column method which ignores the effect of rise-to-span ratio. This may induce a gap between the calculated result and actual stability capacity. In this study, a FE model is used to predict the buckling behavior of CFST truss arches subjected to uniformly distributed loads. The influence of rise-to-span ratio on the capacity of truss arches is investigated, and it is found that the stability capacity reduces as rise-to-span ratio declines. Besides, the calculations of equivalent slenderness ratio for different truss sections are made to consider the effect of shear deformation. Moreover, based on FE results, a new design equation is proposed to predict the in-plane strength of CFST parabolic truss arches under uniformly distributed loads.

  • The free vibration of axially functionally graded tapered arches including shear deformation and rotatory inertia are studied through solving the governing differential equation of motion. Numerical results are presented for circular, parabolic, catenary, elliptic and sinusoidal arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end restraints. In this study Differential Quadrature element of lowest order (DQEL) or Lagrangian Interpolation technique is applied to solve the problems. Three general taper types for rectangular section are considered. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated and compared with the published results.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with general boundary condition. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a arch element acting the stress resultants and the inertia forces, the governing differential equation is derived for the in-plane free vibration of such arches. Differential equations are solved numerically to calculate natural frequencies. In numerical examples, the parabolic arch is considered. The effects of the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the vertical spring coefficient and the rotational spring coefficient on the natural frequencies are analyzed.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on effects of local damages on the in-plane elastic-plastic buckling and strength of a fixed parabolic steel tubular arch under a vertical load distributed uniformly over its span, which have not been reported in the literature hitherto. The in-plane structural behaviour and strength of ten specimens with different local damages are investigated experimentally. A finite element (FE) model for damaged steel tubular arches is established and is validated by the test results. The FE model is then used to conduct parametric studies on effects of the damage location, depth and length on the strength of steel arches. The experimental results and FE parametric studies show that effects of damages at the arch end on the strength of the arch are more significant than those of damages at other locations of the arch, and that effects of the damage depth on the strength of arches are most significant among those of the damage length. It is also found that the failure modes of a damaged steel tubular arch are much related to its initial geometric imperfections. The experimental results and extensive FE results show that when the effective cross-section considering local damages is used in calculating the modified slenderness of arches, the column bucking curve b in GB50017 or Eurocode3 can be used for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of locally damaged parabolic steel tubular arches under uniform compression. Furthermore, a useful interaction equation for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of damaged steel tubular arches that are subjected to the combined bending and axial compression is also proposed based on the validated FE models. It is shown that the proposed interaction equation can provide lower bound assessments for the remaining strength of damaged arches under in-plane general loading.

  • This paper presents a finite element approach for determining the natural frequencies for planar inclined arches of various shapes vibrating in three-dimensional space. The profile of inclined arches, represented by undeformed centriodal axis of cross-section, is defined by the equation of plane curves expressed in the rectangular coordinates which are : circular, parabolic, sine, elliptic, and catenary shapes. In free vibration state, the arch is slightly displaced from its undeformed position. The linear relationship between curvature-torsion and axial strain is expressed in terms of the displacements in three-dimensional space. The finite element discretization along the span length is used rather than the total are length. Numerical results for arches of various shapes are given and they are in good agreement with those reported in literature. The natural frequency parameters and mode shapes are reported as functions of two nondimensional parameters: the span to cord length ratio (e) and the rise to cord length ratio (f).

  • In this study, an explicit transient analysis program considering material and geometric nolinearities has been developed and used to analyze the dynamic behaviors of circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and catenary arches according to the change of shapes and boundary conditions. To understand dynamic behaviors of arches, first of all, the results of free vibration analysis for four kinds of arches are discussed. The results of transient analysis under impact loads we discussed in respect of boundary condition, change of height, and arch-shape. The dynamic behaviors of arches by nonlinear transient analysis considering both material and geometric nolinearities are also discussed.
