This study was performed to evaluate physico-chemical properties and antioxidant activity of pork patties with tomato powder as affected by water solubility. Fresh tomatoes were homogenized and dried in a $60^{\circ}C$ oven. Dried tomato powder was added to double deionized-water and stirred. The soluble and insoluble portions were collected by freeze-drying. Thus, total dried powder (T1) and water soluble (T2) and insoluble powders (T3) were prepared for the experiment. Pork patties containing 0.5% water insoluble powder had the highest redness and yellowness values among the treatments (p<0.05). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance values of pork patties containing 0.5% dried tomato powder were lower than those of the control (p<0.05) and not different from those of the reference (0.01% BHT). Total bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae (VRB) tended to increase with increasing storage time from 0 to 14 d; however, these values were not statistically different among treatments. These results suggest that lipid oxidation may be suppressed by adding tomato powder to pork patties; thus, tomato powder could be used as a natural antioxidant in meat products as a partial replacement for synthetic antioxidants.
This study was carried out to examine the possibility to replace imported wheat flour with taro. Taro and wheat flour were used for the extenders after oven drying($100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$)and pulverized into 80-100mesh minute powder by laboratory willey mill. Urea- and phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives were used for plywood manufacture, and the extending materials mixed with the extension at the ratio of 10, 20, 30, and 50% to each resin solution. The results obtained at this study were summarized as follows; 1) In dry and wet shear strength of urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive, taro showed very excellent bonding strength compared with wheat flour in all extending ratio. Therefore taro showed the possibility that be usable to taro in place of wheat flour. 2) In dry and wet shear strength of phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive, in general, wheat flour showed higher bonding strength than taro. But in dry shear strength, taro showed higher shear strength than wheat flour in 30 and 50% extension.
Epifluorescence microscopy was used to observe epiphytic bacteria directly on plant leaf surfaces as well as indirectly in the leaf liberating solution by staining with fluorochromes of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and acridine orange(AO). Epiphytic bacteria could not be well observed on the leaf surface by staining with AO due to an intrusive orange or red background fluorescence. However, DAPI gave us clear epifluorescent images of the bacteria on the leaf. On the contrary, epiphytic bacteria in the liberating leaf solution were well observed on filters stained by both types of fluorochrome, although DAPI showed better fluorescent images than AO and not necessarily required a washing step of the filters stained. The optimum conditions of the DAPI stains were 5 $\mu$g/ml for 5 min both for leaves and for filters of the liberating solution. It was confirmed that a critical step in the epifluorescence microscopy of leaf surfaces was to minimize release of water from the leaf. For this, the stained leaf samples were put on a filter paper, kept in a dry oven at $70^{\circ}C$ for 2 min instead of air-drying, and then immediately observed by epifluorescence microscopy. The established technique was applied to enumerate epiphytic bacteria on oak tree leaf surfaces.
The effect of microwave treatment on Korean ginseng was studied by measuring the changes in moisture, crude lipid, crude ash, crude protein, total dietary fiber and saponin contents, as well as changes in density, color and microstructure. Korean ginseng was treated with 100 or 200 watts of microwaves for 1 or 3 hrs, respectively, followed by drying using an oven at $60^{\circ}C$ for 96 hrs. The moisture contents decreased to 13.12~10.77% from an initial 76.26%. The amounts of lipid and ash were reduced in proportion to the time of microwave treatment and level of microwave power. The amount of protein in ginseng after microwave treatment did not significantly change. The amount of total dietary fiber increased after microwave treatment and the color of dried ginseng became dark. The amounts of ginsenoside-$Rb_1$, $Rb_2+Rb_3$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, $Rg_2+Rh_1$ and $Rg_3$ were reduced after treatment with 100 watts of microwave radiation for 1 and 3. The amounts of ginsenoside-$Rb_1$, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, $Rg_2+Rh_1$ and $Rg_3$ after treatment with 200 watts of microwave radiation for 1 and 3 hr also reduced. On the other hand, the amounts of ginsenoside-$Rb_2+Rb_3$ and Rc after treatment of ginseng with 200 watts of microwave radiation for 1 and 3 hrs were increased.

Objective: An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different diet formulations: F1 (Two complicated basal diets containing different crude protein levels plus tested feedstuff) vs F2 (A simple corn soybean meal [SBM] basal diet plus tested feedstuff) combined with total collection (TC) or chromic oxide ($Cr_2O_3$) marker or acid-insoluble ash (AIA) marker method, and freeze-dry or oven-dry (OD) technique on estimation of nutrient digestibility in diets fed to growing pigs. Methods: In F1, twelve barrows were allocated to two $6{\times}4$ Youden Squares. The treatment diets included a high protein basal (HPB) diet, a low protein basal (LPB) diet, a corn diet and a wheat bran (WB) diet formulated based on the HPB diet, and a SBM diet and a rapeseed meal (RSM) diet formulated based on the LPB diet. In F2, eight barrows were allocated to two $4{\times}4$ Latin Squares. The treatment diets included a corn basal diet, a SBM basal diet formulated based on the corn diet, and a WB diet and a RSM diet formulated based on the SBM diet. Results: Concentration of digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME), and the apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy, ash, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre determined by $Cr_2O_3$ marker method were greater than those determined by TC and AIA marker methods in HPB, LPB, and RSM diets formulated by F1 and in corn diet formulated by F2 (p<0.05). The DE values in WB and both DE and ME values in SBM and RSM estimated using F1 were greater than those estimated using F2 (p<0.05). Conclusion: From the accuracy aspect, the AIA marker or TC method combined with OD technique is recommended for determining the energy concentration and nutrient digestibility of components in diets fed to growing pigs.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activities of Dansam (S. miltiorrhiza). The Dansam (S. miltiorrhiza) was extracted with ethanol and methanol, and the extracts were fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol and water, in that order. The antioxidant activities of Dansam (S. miltiorrhiza) were determined by measuring the radical scavenging effects, using the 1, l-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) method. The electron donating ability was shown to be about 50% (IC50) at concentration of L-ascorbic acid, Dansam that reflected eliminatory effect by 50% were 9.48$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, 8.28$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, and l2.59$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ respectively. According to the results of the above anti oxidation experiments, those for the group with the added Dansam showed a decreased oxidation, but the antioxidation increased with time. With a storage temperature of 60 C for 5 days, the acid value for the relative antioxidant activities were higher than in the Control group. The peroxide values for the relative antioxidant activities were also higher than in the Control group. The TBA values for the relative antioxidant activities were higher than in the Control group.

Zirconia and titanium alloys, which are mainly used for dental implant materials, have poor osseointegration and osteogenesis abilities due to their bioinertness with low bioactivity on surface. In order to improve their surface bioinertness, surface modification with a bioactive material is an easy and simple method. In this study, akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7), a silicate-based bioceramic material with excellent bone bonding ability, was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and investigated its bioactivity from the analysis of surface dissolution and precipitation of hydroxyapatite particles in SBF solution. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) were used as starting materials. After homogeneous mixing of starting materials by ball milling and the drying of at oven, uniaxial pressing was performed to form a compacted disk, and then heat-treated at high temperature to induce the solid-state reaction to akermanite. Bioactivity of synthesized akermanite disk was evaluated with the reaction temperature from the immersion test in SBF solution. The higher the reaction temperature, the more pronounced the akermanite phase and the less the surface dissolution at particle surface. It resulted that synthesized akermanite particles had high bioactivity on particle surface, but it depended on reacted temperature and phase composition. Moderate dissolution occurred at particle surfaces and observed the new precipitated hydroxyapatite particles in synthetic akermanite with solid-state reaction at 1100℃.
To make a better use of the beneficial bacterial inoculants in the agricultural practice, dry forms of bacterial fertilizer or pesticides are prepared with carrier materials. During the drying process of bacterial inoculant, most of the cells face a severe osmotic pressure and dehydration, and die off. Our study describes the effect of osmoprotectants such as trigonelline and trehalose on the survival of bacterial cells in high salt concentration and drying conditions. A fluorescent Pseudomonas, strain SSL3, used in this study, could grow in high salt concentration of upto 5% but the cells could not overcome the growth retardation at over 7% of salt concentration. The addition of trigonelline, even on small amount, in liquid medium containing 4% NaCl was detrimental to the cell. However, the addition of trehalose of upto 10 mM to the liquid medium containing 4% NaCl, enhanced cell growth. The cell growth was retarded when 150mM trehalose was added to the medium. Upon dry formulation of cells, trehalose was added. And the dry cells were inoculated into the soil to determine the effect of osmoprotectants on the survival of the cells. The survival of the cells, both in wet or dry soil, was improved by the addition of trehalose during the dry cell formulation. The positive effect of trehalose on the cell survival at $-20^{\circ}C$ and $-70^{\circ}C$ was oven more pronounced. The FTIR (Fourier transformation infra-red) spectroscopic analysis showed that the change of the 2nd amide group was reduced by adding trehalose to the medium containing 4% NaCl. These results suggest that trehalose can protect the cell membrane from dryness or high concentration of salt, thereby diminishing the sudden change of the protein structure of the cell membrane and, as a consequence, improving the cell survival.

The electrochemical properties using the cells assembled with the synthesized $LiCoO_2$(LCO) were evaluated in this study. The LCO was synthesized from high-purity cobalt sulfate($CoSO_4$) which is recovered from the cathode scrap in the wastes lithium ion secondary battery(LIB). The leaching process for dissolving the metallic elements from the LCO scrap was controlled by the quantities of the sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The metal precipitation to remove the impurities was controlled by the pH value using the caustic soda. And also, D2EHPA and $CYANEX^{(R)}272$ were used in the solvent extraction process in order to remove the impurities again. The high-purity $CoSO_4$ solution was recovered by the processes mentioned above. We made the 6 wt.% $CoSO_4$ solution mixed with distilled water. And the 6 wt.% $CoSO_4$ solution was mixed with oxalic acid by the stirring method and dried in oven. $LiCoO_2$ as a cathode material for LIB was formed by the calcination after the drying and synthesis with the $Li_2CO_3$ powder. We assembled the cells using the $LiCoO_2$ powders and evaluated the electrochemical properties. And then, we confirmed possibility of the recyclability about the cathode materials for LIBs.
This research was carried out to examine the substitutional feasibility of low-priced materials produced in waste of forest instead of wheat flour which is extended for plywood adhesives. Wheat, pine bark, wood flour and pine foliage of coniferous trees or poplar foliage of hardwood species were selected and pulverized into 60-100 mesh minute powder after they were dried at $100-105^{\circ}C$ during 24 hours in the drying oven. The prepared particles as above were added to urea formaldehyde resin, urea-melamine copolymer resin and water soluble phenol formaldehyde resin in the ratio of 10, 20, 30 and 50%. After plywoods were processed by the above extending ratios, shear strength of extended plywoods were analyzed and discussed. The results obtained at this study were summarised as follows; 1. In the case of urea formaldehyde resin, both dry and wet shear strength of plywoods extended by wheat flour were shown the highest value. 2. Dry shear strength of urea-melamine copolymer resin was better than that of urea formaldehyde resin on the whole, while plywoods extended by wheat flour were shown excellent results. 3. Among 10% and 20% extensions of urea-melamine copolymer resin, the best results were shown by poplar leaves powder, wheat powder and wood flour. They had no significant difference statistically. 4. In the case of water soluble phenol formaldehyde resin, although dry shear strength of pine leaves powder was higher than that of wheat flour in the ratio of 10%, there was no significant difference between them in the ratio of 10 and 20%. 5. Among 20, 30 and 50% extensions of water soluble phenol formaldehyde resin, wet shear strength of wood flour and bark powder was higher than that of wheat flour. Wet shear strength of wood flour in the ratio of 10% was shown the same tendency as above.
