  • The effective fracture toughness testing of materials intended for application in Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices is required in order to improve understanding of how micro sized material used in device may be expected to perform upon the micro scale. ${\gamma}$-TiAl based materials are being considered for application in MEMS devices at elevated temperatures. Especially, in Alloy 4, both ${\alpha}_2$ and ${\gamma}$ lamellae were altered markedly in 3,000 h, $700^{\circ}C$ exposure. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. Parallel decomposition of coarse ${\alpha}_2$ into bunches of very fine (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) lamellae. The materials were examined 2 types Alloy 4 on heat exposed specimen($700^{\circ}C$, 3,000 h) and no heat exposed one. Micro sized cantilever beams were prepared mechanical polishing on both side at $25{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and electro final stage polishing to observe lamellar orientation of same colony with EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction Pattern). Through lamellar orientation as inter-lamellae or trans-lamellae, Cantilever beam was fabricated with Focused Ion Beam(FIB). The directional behavior of the lamellar structure was important property in single material, because of the effects of the different processing method and variations in properties according to lamellar orientation. In MEMS application, it is first necessary to have a reliable understanding of the manufacturing methods to be used to produce micro structure.

  • The various ultrasonic energies (28 kHz, 40 kHz, 70 kHz) were used to improve the magnetic properties of Ba-ferrite as the perpendicular magnetic recording materials. In the sheet formation process, the different orientation hars were used to orientate perpendicularly the dispersed Ba-ferrite to sheet. Throughout these experiments, we have obtained relatively higher value of S. Q. (Squreness Ratio : 0.783) and O. R. (Orientation Ratio : 2.87) magnetic properties at 2 h ultrasonic treatment of 40 kHz ultrasonic energy. With aid of SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) images, the obtained sheet with dispersed of Ba-ferrite could be used for perpendicular magnetic recording due to orientated to easy magnetization axis, c-axis. In addition, the value of S. Q. of sheet decreased with increasing applied magnetic field angle during measuring of S. Q. value with changing applied magnetic field angle by VSM (Vibrating Sample Magnetrometer). This result also induced the probability for prependicular magnetic recording.

  • In recent year, BLT$(Bi_{3.25}La_{0.75}Ti_3O_{12})$ has been one of promising substitute materials at the ferroelectric random access memory applications. We manufactured $(Bi_{3.25}La_{0.75}Ti_3O_{12})$ Target with a ceramic process. The BLT target was sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Using RF magnetron sputtering, a deposited BLT thin films were estimated about ferroelectric property as a functions of post annealing time. The BLT thin films showed a promoted ferroelectric characteristics at the post annealied sample for 30 minutes. This sample exhibited the (117) preferred crystal orientation, current density of $2{\times}10^{-8}A/cm^2$, a remanent polarization of $10{\mu}C/cm^2$ and a coercive field of 62.1 KV/cm respectively.

  • MRE(Magneto-rheological Elastomer) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus in magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb broader frequency range of vibration. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particle (i.e., chain-like formation) in rubber matrix. In this study, NR was used as a matrix in order to manufacture MREs. Magnetic reactive powder(MRP), having rapid magnetic reaction, was selected as a magnetic particle to give magnetic field reactive modulus. The mechanical properties of manufactured MREs were measured without the application of magnetic field. The results showed that the tensile property and resilience were decreased while the hardness was increased with the addition of CIP. The analysis of MR effect was carried out by FFT analyzer with various magnetic flux. As the addition of MRP and magnetic flux increased, increment of MR effect was observed.

  • Various matching methods have been introduced by investigators to improve digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy of satellite imagery. This study proposed an area-based matching method according to land cover property using correlation coefficient of pixel brightness value between the two images for DEM generation from IKONOS stereo imagery. For this, matching line (where "matching line" implies straight line that is approximated to complex nonlinear epipolar geometry) is established by exterior orientation parameters to minimize search area. The matching is carried out based on this line. Land cover classes are divided off into water, urban land, forest and agricultural land. Matching size is selected using a correlation-coefficient image in the four areas. The selected sizes are $81{\times}81$ pixels window, $21{\times}21$ pixels window, $119{\times}119$ pixels window and $51{\times}51$ pixels window in the water area, urban land, forest land and agricultural land, respectively. And hence, DEM is generated from IKONOS stereo imagery using the selected matching sizes and land cover map on the four types.

  • Transparent organic materials have been frequently used as an analog of the solidifying metallic materials, because their transparency permits an in-situ observation of the microstructural development during solidification through optical microscopy. Pivalic acid (PVA)-ethanol system showing an anisotropic property in solid-liquid interfacial energy and interface kinetics was adopted in the present experiment, and the detailed experiments performed are as follows: (1) variation of dendrite tip temperature with growth velocity, (2) correlation between primary dendrite arm spacing (${\lambda}_1$) and the growth orientation away from the heat flow direction (tilt angle: ${\theta}$), (3) variation of dendrite tip radius (R) with growth velocity (V), (4) dendrite tip stability parameter (${\sigma}^*$) and its dependence on the concentration. Concerning the correlation between the dendrite tip temperature and growth velocity the present result is well suited to Hunt-Lu equation. As the tilt angle increases, the average primary dendrite spacing tends to increase.

  • Transparent conductive oxide (TCO) are necessary as front electrode or anti-reflecting coating for increasing efficiency of LED and Photodiode. In this paper, aluminum-doped Zinc oxide films(AZO) were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering on glass(corning 1737) and Si substrate at temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and then annealed at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ for 1hr in Ar and vaccum. The AZO films were etched in diluted HCL (0.5 %) to examine the surface morphology properties. After annealing, Structural and electrical property were investigated. The c-axis orientation along (002) plane was enhanced and the electrical resistivity of the AZO film decreased from $1.1\times10^{-1}$ to $1.6\times10^{-2}{\Omega}cm$. We observed textured structure of AZO thin film etched for 2s.

  • This study determines matching size for digital elevation model (DEM) production according to land cover property from IKONOS Geo-level stereo image. We applied area based matching method using correlation coefficient of pixel brightness value between the two images. After matching line (where "matching line" implies straight line that is approximated to complex non-linear epipolar geometry) is established by exterior orientation parameters to minimize search area, the matching is carried out based on this line. The experiment is performed according to land cover property, which is divided off into four areas (water, urban land, forest land and agricultural land). In each of the test areas, matching size is selected using a correlation-coefficient image and parallax image. • This study was focused on the improvement of the measurement technique of P-wave velocity for the assesment of the anisotropy of the engineering property of rock. Samples used were collected from a working quarry within the Carnmenellis granite area on which series of engineering geological data have been accumulated. This study mainly concerned the development of measurement technique at the curved surface of rock, the use of natural honey-based coupling agent and the drying method for rock specimen over $P_2O_5$. According to the results, the range of the P-wave velocity anisotropy in two dimensional plane, fell between 0 and 4.68 (%). The direction where maximum velocity occurred was parallel to the orientation of the maximum in-situ stress. The result showed that P - wave velocity is a useful measure to asses the anisotropy of the engineering property of rock and it is suggested that the improvements adopted here can be applied to the experimental work on the rocks in Korea.

  • Tool-chip adhesion impacts on cutting performance significantly, especially in finish cutting process. To promote cutting tools' anti-adhesion property, the concave micro-grooves texture (MGT) and convex volcano-like texture (VLT) were fabricated separately on lathe tools' rake faces by laser surface texturing (LST). Various orientations of MGT and different area densities (9% and 48%) and regions (partial and full) of VLT were considered in textured patterns designing. The following orthogonal cutting experiments, machining of aluminum alloy 5038, analyzed tools' performances including cutting force, cutting stability, chip shape, rake face adhesion and abrasion. It indicated that under dry finish cutting conditions, MGT contributed to cutting stability and low cutting forces, meanwhile friction and normal force reduced by around 15% and 10%, respectively with a weak correlation to the grooves' orientation. High density VLT tools, on the other hand, presented an obvious anti-adhesion property. A $5{\mu}m$ reduction of crater wear's depth can be observed on textured rake faces after long length cutting and textured rake faces presented half size of BUE regions comparing to the flat tool, however, once the texture morphologies were filled or worn, the anti-adhesion effect could be invalid. The bearing ratio curve was employed to analysis tool-chip contact and durability of textured surfaces contributing to a better understanding of anti-adhesion and enhanced durability of the textured tools.
