All medicines are poisonous, and there are none free from poison. Thus, all things may be regarded as poisonous. And poison and medicine is the same one of which actions differ from each other. Medicine may be good medicine or poison according to doses, whether chemical medicine or herbal one. Herbal medicine falls into the category of natural materials. From ancient times humankind has Been using animals and plants as food, but on the other hand, chemical medicine is unfamiliar relatively to natural materials. Somecine is unfamilis, absorbed into the human boan, are transformed and help deemicfication. Other medicines protect the gastric mucous membrane and are demulcent, and inhibithemica materials from being absorbed. In some cases, ine is unfamilis function as deemicfiers in combination withhemica materials, and remove the toxicity and side effect caused by drug properties. Herbal medicine causes less side effects, as compared to chemical one, and thus can work effectively. As the case stands, some deem that herbal medicine does not cause problems despite high dose and long-term use because it is nontoxic or low-toxic. However, herbal medicine may be also poisonous though it is used at a very low dose. Even a deadly poison may produce therapeutic results satisfactorily without side effects, on condition that it is used properly.
Objectives Bangpungtongsung-san(Fangfengtongsheng-san) has been traditionally prescribed a a restorative medicine. Methods In this study, we investigated the acute toxicity of water-extracted Bangpungtongsung-san(Fangfengtongsheng-san). 20 male and 20 female mice were orally treated of Bangpungtongsung-san(Fangfengtongsheng-san) at the respective doses of 0 (control group), 1250, 2500 and 5000mg/kg for 14days. Objectives : The internet is the most common method to investigate information. It is showed that 75.2% of Internet users of 20s had health information search experience. So this study is aim to understanding of interest of public about the herbal medicine using internet search query volume data. Methods : The Naver that is the top internet portal web service of the Republic of Korea has provided an Internet search query volume data from January 2007 to the current through the Naver data lab (http://datalab.naver.com) service. We have collected search query volume data which was provided by the Naver in 606 herbal medicine names and sorted the data by peak and total search volume. Results : The most frequently searched herbal medicines which has less bias and sorted by peak search volume is 'wasong (와송)'. And the most frequently searched herbal medicines which has less bias and sorted by total search volume is 'hasuo (하수오)'.Conclustions : This study is showed that the rank of interest of public about herbal medicines. Among the above herbal medicines, some herbal medicines had supply issue. And there are some other herbal medicines that had very little demand in Korean medicine market, but highly interested public. So it is necessary to monitor for these herbal medicines which is highly interested of the public. Furthermore if the reliability of the data obtained on the basis of these studies, it is possible to be utilizing herbal medicine monitoring service.
Objectives: In this study, we aim to demonstrate an effect of crab water extract (CWE) on reflux esophagitis (RE) using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Raw 264.7 cell and rat model. Methods: To investigate on LPS-induced Raw 264.7 cell, CWE was co-treated with LPS. CWE suppressed Nitric Oxide (NO) production which increased by LPS treatment. Also, CWE showed no cytotoxicity at the concentrations range from 500 ㎍/㎖ to 2000 ㎍/㎖. Next, to investigate the protective effects of CWE on RE rat model, eighteen rats were divided in to three groups: sham group, reflux esophagitis group, and reflux esophagitis pre-treated with 100 mg/kg CWE 1 h before surgery. RE was induced by a pylorus and forestomach ligation operation and all rats were sacrificed after 4 h 30 min from surgery. Results: In gross examination, the CWE administration attenuated esophageal mucosal injury upon histological evaluation of reflux esophagus of rats. The CWE downregulated the expression levels of proteins related to inflammation, such as COX-2 and TNF-α in the esophagus tissue. In addition, the CWE suppressed the NF-κB and IκB-α activation. Conclusions: Based on these findings, we concluded that CWE could possess protective effect against damage to the esophagus due to reflux esophagitis.
Four glycosides, rosamultin (1), tetracentronside B (2), 4-O-methylellagic acid 3-O-${\alpha}$-$_L$-rhamnopyranoside (3), and vanillic acid 4-O-${\beta}$-$_L$-glucopyranoside (4), isolated from the roots extract of Potentilla discolor, were subjected to in vitro bioassays to evaluate the inhibitory activity on advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation and rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR). Compound 3 exhibited a significant inhibitory activity against both AGEs formation and RLAR with IC$_{50}$ values of 79.5 and 8.03 ${\mu}$M, respectively. All the compounds (1-4) were isolated for the first time from this plant.
Objectives : Samhwangsasim-tang (SST), Hwangryeonhaedok-tang (HHT), Ukgan-san (UGS), Onjunghwadam-hwan (OHH) and Samul-tang (SMT) have been used for the treatment of various diseases. This study was performed to compare the anti-obesity effects of 5 herbal formulas in high fat diet-(HFD) induced obese mice. Methods : The mice were randomly divided into seven groups that were fed a normal diet (ND), a HFD, a HFD plus SST (HFD + SST), a HFD plus HHT (HFD + HHT), a HFD plus UGS (HFD + UGS), a HFD plus OHH (HFD + OHH), or HFD plus SMT (HFD + SMT) at 300 mg/kg/day for 7 weeks. All groups were assayed for body weights, food efficiency ratio (FER), final liver and fat weight and blood biochemical parameters. Results : The increased body weights, food efficiency ratio (FER), and serum total triglyceride were decreased in HFD + OHH group relative to the same measurements in HFD group. Furthermore, the HFD + SST group significantly reduced FER, liver and abdominal subcutaneous fat weight gains, and serum total triglyceride, whereas HDL-cholesterol level was increased compared to HFD group. Conclusions : These results suggested that HFD + OHH and HFD + SST exert anti-obesity effects in HFD-induced obese mice.
Objectives: This study was to establish safety and efficacy of using herbal medicine during pregnancy and to investigate patient's satisfaction. Methods: We investigated general pregnancy outcome, birth history, newborn infant's physical condition and patient's satisfaction. Survey respondents were 54 gynecological outpatients who visited Daejeon University Dunsan Oriental hospital from January 1, 2011 through February 28, 2013. Results: A total of fifty one cases maintained pregnancy and 3 cases had miscarriages. Forty seven cases delivered normally, 4 cases gave birth prematurely. There was no congenital malformation due to using herbal medicine and most of newborn babies had on the average weight and height and were healthy condition. The average score of patient's satisfaction was 3.44 point (Excellent=5). Conclusions: This study presents safety and efficacy of using herbal medicine during pregnancy.
Objectives : The present study aimed to investigate the pharmacological activity of water and ethanol (EtOH) extracts from Socheongnyong-tang (SCNT) on inflammation and its related disease. Methods : The cells were treated with nontoxic concentrations of water and EtOH extract from SCNT in BEAS-2B, HaCaT, RAW 264.7 and 3T3-L1 cells. These cells were stimulated by tumor necrosis facter (TNF)-${\alpha}$, TNF-${\alpha}$/interferon (IFN)-${\gamma}$, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), respectively. 3T3-L1 cells were differentiated by insulin. After incubation, supernatant were collected and biological indicator measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : Our results indicate that the water and EtOH extract of SCNT significantly inhibited the production of regulated on activation normal T-cell expression and secreted (RANTES) by treatment of TNF-${\alpha}$ in BEAS-2B cell, and significantly reduced the production of RANTES and macrophage-derived chemokine increased by treatment of TNF-${\alpha}$/IFN-${\gamma}$ in HaCaT cell. Moreover, those extracts significantly decreased the activity of nitric oxide and prostaglandin $E_2$ in LPS-induced RAW 264.7, and significantly inhibited the increased activity of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and expression of leptin induced by differentiation in 3T3-L1 cell. Conclusions : These results indicate that both water and EtOH extract of SCNT has powerful effects on inflammation and its related disease. Therefore, SCNT can be developed as a potential pharmacological agent related various diseases. Although the significant effects were observed in both SCNT water and EtOH extract, the EtOH extract was more effective on most experiments than its water extract. Taken together, these findings indicate that the SCNT EtOH extract may have more potential pharmacological agent.
Inflammation is a disease that continues to afflict large numbers of people and may cause other diseases, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, etc. prostaglandins(PGs), one of arachidonic acid metabolites, are major chemical mediators in the process of inflammation. In traditional herbal medicine, many kinds of herbal drugs have been widely used for the treatment of inflammation. So, we analyzed many publications until 2001 which worked on inhibition of $PGE_2$ synthesis by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) with herbs and herb oriented single compounds. And then we tried to make interpretations of herbal traditional prescriptions for inflammation. There are significant correlations between herbal medicine prescribed and inhibitions of COX-2 activity. From our efforts and further researches, we expect to develop new-inflammatory herbal drugs which have more efficacy and fewer side effects.
