  • A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis and topology optimization methods are developed for power flow analysis. Efficient adjoint sensitivity analysis method is employed and further extended to topology optimization problems. Young's moduli of all the finite elements are selected as design variables and parameterized using a bulk material density function. The objective function and constraint are an energy compliance of the system and an allowable volume fraction, respectively. A gradient-based optimization, the modified method of feasible direction, is used to obtain the optimal material layout. Through several numerical examples, we notice that the developed design sensitivity analysis method is very accurate and efficient compared with the finite difference sensitivity. Also, the topology optimization method provides physically meaningful results. The developed is design sensitivity analysis method is very useful to systematically predict the impact on the design variations. Furthermore, the topology optimization method can be utilized in the layout design of structural systems.

  • In this paper the trust region method is studied and applied in aerodynamic shape optimization. The trust region method is a gradient-based optimization method, but it is not as popular as other methods in engineering computations. Its theory will be explained for unconstrained optimization problems and a trust region subproblem will be solved with the dogleg method. After verifying the trust region method with analytical test problems, it is applied to aerodynamic shape design optimization and the performance of airfoil is improved successfully.

  • Growth-strain method was used for shape optimization of general structures. It was verified that the growth-strain method is very effective for shape optimization of solid structures in previous papers, but It could not provide reasonable optimized shape for structures with holes inside. The purpose of this study is to improve the growth-strain method for shape optimization of two- and three- dimensional structures. In order to improve, the problems occurred as the growth-strain method was applied to general structures were examined, and then the improved method was suggested. Finally, an automatic shape optimization system was built up by the improved growth-strain method with finite element method. The effectiveness and practicality of the developed shape optimization system was verified by some examples.

  • This study was carried out to find out the reasonable optimum design method for the design of prestressed concrete structures. The optimum design problems were formulated and computer programs to solve these problems were developed. To test the reliablity, efficiency, possibility of application and reasonablity of optimum design problems and computer programs, both continuous optimization method and mixed-discrete optimization method were applied to the design of prestressed concrete composite girder and application results were discussed. It is proved that mixed-discrete optimization method is more reliable, efficient and reasonable than continuous optimization method for the optimum design of prestressed concrete structures.

  • In this paper, optimization of the vaned centrifugal compressor was carried out at a given mass flow rate condition. Firstly, impeller optimization was conducted using response surface method (RSM) which is one of optimization methods. After the optimization of the impeller was completed, diffuser optimization was performed with the optimized impeller. In these processes, Navier-Stokes solver was used to calculate the flow inside the centrifugal compressor. And the optimization is performed with Box-Behnken design method which is efficient for fitting second-order response surfaces to reduce the number of calculations required. As a result, compared with the reference model, the efficiency and the pressure ratio of the optimized impeller and diffuser are found to be increased. The performance at off-design conditions is presented.

Triangular units based method for simultaneous optimizations of planar trusses

  • Simultaneous optimization of trusses which concurrently takes into account design variables related to the size, shape and topology of the structure is recognized as highly complex optimization problems. In this class of optimization problems, it is possible to encounter several unstable mechanisms throughout the solution process. However, to obtain a feasible solution, these unstable mechanisms somehow should be rejected from the set of candidate solutions. This study proposes triangular unit based method (TUBM) instead of ground structure method, which is conventionally used in the topology optimization, to decrease the complexity of search space of simultaneous optimization of the planar truss structures. TUBM considers stability of the triangular units for 2 dimensional truss systems. In addition, integrated particle swarm optimizer (iPSO) strengthened with robust technique so called improved fly-back mechanism is employed as the optimizer tool to obtain the solution for these class of problems. The results obtained in this study show the applicability and efficiency of the TUBM combined with iPSO for the simultaneous optimization of planar truss structures.

A Study on Design Optimization of Mooring Pier using Prestressed Precast Concrete Panel (프리스트레스트 프리캐스트 콘크리트 패널을 이용한 잔교식부두의 최적설계)

  • Recently, the area of design optimization, especially structural optimization, has been and to be a continuous active area of research. And the design optimizations of port facilities have been achieved by many other civil engineers. But the design optimization of port facilities were limited to the design optimization of the breasting dolphin. This paper invested the design optimization of mooring pier and the foundations of mooring pier was suggested considering the convenience of repair and reinforcement work. The mooring pier devised with prestressed precast concrete panel and rigid frame welded wide flange beam to steel pipe pile. To accomplish the design optimization of mooring pier, the Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier Method(ALM) of ADS(Garret N. Vanderplaats) optimization routine, BFGS method as optimizer and Golden Section Method as one dimensional search were utilized. As a result, thirty percent of material cost for construction was reduced by design optimization. The tensile stress of concrete panel and bottom flage was critical constraints under service load. So, using high strength concrete and steel will be economical. And lots of initial values must be invested to accomplish the design optimization in design procedures.

  • This paper presents a multi-step structural design optimization method fur machine tool structures using a genetic algorithm with dynamic penalty. The first step is a sectional topology optimization, which is to determine the best sectional construction that minimize the structural weight and the compliance responses subjected to some constraints. The second step is a static design optimization, in which the weight and the static compliance response are minimized under some dimensional and safety constraints. The third step is a dynamic design optimization, where the weight static compliance, and dynamic compliance of the structure are minimized under the same constraints. The proposed design method was examined on the 10-bar truss problem of topology and sizing optimization. And the results showed that our solution is better than or just about the same as the best one of the previous researches. Furthermore, we applied this method to the topology and sizing optimization of a crossbeam slider for a high-speed machining center. The topology optimization result gives the best desirable cross-section shape whose weight was reduced by 38.8% than the original configuration. The subsequent static and dynamic design optimization reduced the weight, static and dynamic compliances by 5.7 %, 2.1% and 19.1% respectively from the topology-optimized model. The examples demonstrated the feasibility of the suggested design optimization method.

  • A research to evaluate efficiency of design optimization was performed for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses process using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoil and to evaluate their efficiencies. One dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in distributed computing environment. The SAO was found quite suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the fittest for distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model are annoying and time-consuming so that they often impair the automatic capability of design optimization and also deteriorate efficiency from the practical point of view.

A modified particle swarm approach for multi-objective optimization of laminated composite structures

  • Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population based optimization algorithm which has attracted attentions of many researchers. This method has great potentials to be applied to many optimization problems. Despite its robustness the standard version of PSO has some drawbacks that may reduce its performance in optimization of complex structures such as laminated composites. In this paper by suggesting a new variation scheme for acceleration parameters and inertial weight factors of PSO a novel optimization algorithm is developed to enhance the basic version's performance in optimization of laminated composite structures. To verify the performance of the new proposed method, it is applied in two multi-objective design optimization problems of laminated cylindrical. The numerical results from the proposed method are compared with those from two other conventional versions of PSO-based algorithms. The convergancy of the new algorithms is also compared with the other two versions. The results reveal that the new modifications inthe basic forms of particle swarm optimization method can increase its convergence speed and evade it from local optima traps. It is shown that the parameter variation scheme as presented in this paper is successful and can evenfind more preferable optimum results in design of laminated composite structures.
