  • This paper presents an evolution program for optimal expansion problem with backlogs in demand which is to determine when and how much capacity should be added under varying types of demand and cost. To overcome premature convergence and stalling, we employ an exponential-fitness scaling scheme. To improve the chromosomes, we introduce hetero-dimensional mutation which generates a new dimension and produces a feasible solution, and homo-dimensional mutation which mutates the chromosomes in the negative of gradient direction. Finally, a numerical example is discussed.

  • In this paper, 2-axis driving mechanism, which uses voice coil motor (VCM), is proposed to measure the friction force. The proposed VCM actuator consists of two parts; structural part and magnetic circuit part. Structural part is simplified to perform the friction experiments. Magnetic circuit part is composed of two parts. The experiments are accomplished by changing the mass of moving part. Through the experiments, optimal dimension is selected. Finally, the experimental results are verified and the optimal case is applied to the 2-axis driving mechanism, optical image stabilization actuator.

  • In this study, an optimal design study has been made to determine dimensions of die and multi stress rings for extrusion process. For this purpose, a thermo-rigid-viscoplastic finite element program, CAMPform, was used fur forming analysis of extrusion process and a developed elastic finite element program fur elastic stress analysis of the die set including stress rings. And an optimization program, DOT, was employed for the optimization analysis. From this investigation, it was found out that the amount of shrink fitting incurred by the order of assembly of the die set should be taken into account for optimization when the multi stress rings are used in practice. In addition, it is construed that the proposed design method can be beneficial fur improving the tool life of cold extrusion die set.

  • Identity recognition in real environment with a reliable mode is a key issue in human computer interaction (HCI). In this paper, we present a robust person identification system considering score-based optimal reliability measure of audio-visual modalities. We propose an extension of the modified reliability function by introducing optimizing parameters for both of audio and visual modalities. For degradation of visual signals, we have applied JPEG compression to test images. In addition, for creating mismatch in between enrollment and test session, acoustic Babble noises and artificial illumination have been added to test audio and visual signals, respectively. Local PCA has been used on both modalities to reduce the dimension of feature vector. We have applied a swarm intelligence algorithm, i.e., particle swarm optimization for optimizing the modified convection function's optimizing parameters. The overall person identification experiments are performed using VidTimit DB. Experimental results show that our proposed optimal reliability measures have effectively enhanced the identification accuracy of 7.73% and 8.18% at different illumination direction to visual signal and consequent Babble noises to audio signal, respectively, in comparison with the best classifier system in the fusion system and maintained the modality reliability statistics in terms of its performance; it thus verified the consistency of the proposed extension.

  • A new Riemannian geometric model for the controlled plant is proposed by imbedding the control vector space in the state space, so as to reduce the dimension of the model. This geometric model is derived by replacing the orthogonal straight coordinate axes on the state space of a linear system with the curvilinear coordinate axes. Therefore the integral manifold of the geometric model becomes homeomorphic to that of fictitious linear system. For the lower dimensional Riemannian geometric model, a nonlinear optimal regulator with a quadratic form performance index which contains the Riemannian metric tensor is designed. Since the integral manifold of the nonlinear regulator is determined to be homeomorphic to that of the linear regulator, it is expected that the basic properties of the linear regulator such as feedback structure, stability and robustness are to be reflected in those of the nonlinear regulator. To apply the above regulator theory to a real nonlinear plant, it is discussed how to distort the curvilinear coordinate axes on which a nonlinear plant behaves as a linear system. Consequently, a partial differential equation with respect to the homeomorphism is derived. Finally, the computational algorithm for the nonlinear optimal regulator is discussed and a numerical example is shown.

  • The effect of band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) leads to an obvious increase of the leakage current of junctionless (JL) transistors in the OFF state. In this paper, we propose an effective method to decline the influence of BTBT with the example of n-type double gate (DG) JL metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). The leakage current is restrained by changing the geometrical shape and the physical dimension of the gate of the device. The optimal design of the JL MOSFET is indicated for reducing the effect of BTBT through simulation and analysis.

  • Optimal path planning refers to find the safe route to the destination at a low cost, is a major problem with regard to autonomous navigation. Sampling Based Planning(SBP) approaches, such as Rapidly-exploring Random Tree Star($RRT^*$), are the most influential algorithm in path planning due to their relatively small calculations and scalability to high-dimensional problems. $RRT^*$-Smart introduced path optimization and biased sampling techniques into $RRT^*$ to increase convergent rate. This paper presents an improvement plan that has changed the biased sampling method to increase the initial convergent rate of the $RRT^*$-Smart, which is specified as m$RRT^*$-Smart. With comparison among $RRT^*$, $RRT^*$-Smart and m$RRT^*$-Smart in 2 & 3-D environments, m$RRT^*$-Smart showed similar or increased initial convergent rate than $RRT^*$ and $RRT^*$-Smart.

  • Nanoparticle strips (NPS) are widely used as external reinforcers for two-way reinforced concrete slabs. However, the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of these slabs is a very important issue and was evaluated in this study. This study has been done analytically and numerically to optimize the placement of sensors. The properties of slabs and carbon nanotubes as composite sheets were considered isotopic and orthotropic, respectively. The nonlinear Finite Element Method (FEM) approach and suitable optimal placement of sensor approach were developed as a new MATLAB toolbox called DECOMAC by the authors of this paper. The Suitable multi-objective function was considered in optimized processes based on distributed ECOMAC method. Some common concrete slabs in construction with different aspect ratios were considered as case studies. The dimension and distance of nano strips in retrofitting process were selected according to building codes. The results of Optimal Sensor Placement (OSP) by DECOMAC algorithm on un-retrofitted and retrofitted slabs were compared. The statistical analysis according to the Mann-Whitney criteria shows that there is a significant difference between them (mean P-value = 0.61).
