  • Recently 3D surveying is recommended to manage underground facilities systematically before refilling of site operation. As the demand of realtime localization increases, cost reduction and consistent data construction which are realizable by using one man surveying method with unmanned target, are necessary for constructing DB of all sorts of the underground facilities with more speediness and correctness. This study sets a goal to develop a new type of surveying target which allows realtime localization to be performed by one man, through making an optimum reflector(triangle, quadrangle, and semispherical shape) by using the retro-reflection principle of optical prism which is being used for surveying currently. The new surveying target makes realtime surveying possible. To check reliability of its data, the accuracy is compared with surveying coordination of total station for each type in a quantitative method. In the result, the usefulness of the reflector for Underground Facilities localization is proved. Thus the foundation for underground DB construction conducted by one man is established for acquisition of 3D location information in more efficient way through using unmanned target.

  • As part of the SPVS (Short-Period Variability Survey) which is a wide-field $(90'{\times}60')$ photometric monitering program at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy (BOAO), we performed V band time-series CCD photometric observations ofthe young open cluster NGC 129 for 11 nights between October 12, 2004 and November 3, 2005 using the 155mm refractor equipped with $3K{\times}2K$ CCD camera. From the observation we obtained 2400 V band CCD frames and color-magnitude diagram of the cluster. To transform instrumental magnitude to standard magnitude, we applied ensemble normalization technique to all observed time-series data. After the photometric reduction process, we examined variations of 9537 stars. As a result, sixty six of the new variable stars were discovered. To determine the periods of the sevariables, we used DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) and phase-matching technique. According to light curve shape, period, amplitude and the position on a C-M diagram, we classified these variables as 9 SPB type, 9 ${\delta}$ Scuti type, 29 eclipsing, 17 long term variables. However, two of them were not classified. From this study, we learned that small telescopes could be a very useful tool to observe variable stars in the open cluster in survey program.

  • In this study, a series of $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals with different [Li]/[Nb] ratios, congruent $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals with doped Mg and with Mg and codoped with Mn were grown by the Czocharalski method. These were investigated by UV and IR spectrophotometry. Stoichiometry dependences of the UV absorption edge and the $OH^{-}$ absorption spectra were studied with different [Li]/[Nb] ratios. The position of the UV absorption edge adn the shape and peak point of the $OH^{-}$ absorption spectra changed monotonously upto a critical concentration of Mg ions. The mechanism of the incorporation of Mg ions changes at this concentration. The decomposition of the $OH^{-}$ absorption spectra using a Gaussian lineshape function showed that in Li-deficient crystals the absorption spectra consist of five components in contrast to more or less perfect stoichiometric crystals which reveal to three components. On the basis of these results, the intrinsic and the extrinsic defect structure models in $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals were examined. The behaviour of $\nu$ (OH) reflects the defect structure and supports the Li-site vacancy model as the intrinsic defect structure model and the corresponding extrinsic defect model. A brief discussion is also given of the behaviour of $\nu$ (OH) in $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals simultaneously doped with several kinds of impurity.

  • In underwater robotics, vision would be a key element for recognition in underwater environments. However, due to turbidity an underwater optical camera is rarely available. An underwater imaging sonar, as an alternative, delivers low quality sonar images which are not stable and accurate enough to find out natural objects by image processing. For this, artificial landmarks based on the characteristics of ultrasonic waves and their recognition method by a shape matrix transformation were proposed and were proven in Part 1. But, this is not working properly in undulating and dynamically noisy sea-bottom. To solve this, we propose a framework providing a selection phase of likelihood candidates, a selection phase for final candidates, recognition phase and tracking phase in sequence images, where a particle filter based selection mechanism to eliminate fake candidates and a mean shift based tracking algorithm are also proposed. All 4 steps are running in parallel and real-time processing. The proposed framework is flexible to add and to modify internal algorithms. A pool test and sea trial are carried out to prove the performance, and detail analysis of experimental results are done. Information is obtained from tracking phase such as relative distance, bearing will be expected to be used for control and navigation of underwater robots.

  • A novel method for the reconstruction of 3D shape and texture from elemental images has been proposed. Using this method, we can estimate a full 3D polygonal model of objects with seamless triangulation. But in the triangulation process, all the objects are stitched. This generates phantom surfaces that bridge depth discontinuities between different objects. To solve this problem we need to connect points only within a single object. We adopt a segmentation process to this end. The entire process of the proposed method is as follows. First, the central pixel of each elemental image is computed to extract spatial position of objects by correspondence analysis. Second, the object points of central pixels from neighboring elemental images are projected onto a specific elemental image. Then, the center sub-image is segmented and each object is labeled. We used the normalized cut algorithm for segmentation of the center sub-image. To enhance the speed of segmentation we applied the watershed algorithm before the normalized cut. Using the segmentation results, the subdivision process is applied to pixels only within the same objects. The refined grid is filtered with median and Gaussian filters to improve reconstruction quality. Finally, each vertex is connected and an object-based triangular mesh is formed. We conducted experiments using real objects and verified our proposed method.

  • Fly ash produced in coal combustion is a fine-grained material consisting mostly of spherical, glassy, and porous particles. A physical, morphological, and chemical characteristic of fly ash has been analyzed. This study may contribute to the data base of domestic fly ash, the improvement of combustion efficiency, ash recycling and ash collection in the electrostatic precipitator. The physical property of fly ash is determined using a particle counter for the measurement of ash size distribution and gravimeter. Morphological characteristic of fly ash is performed using a scanning electron micrograph and an optical microscope. The chemical components of fly ash are determined using an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP). The distribution of fly ash size was ranged from 15 to 25 $\mu$m in mass median diameter. Exposure conditions of flue gas temperature and duration within the combustion zone of the boiler played an important role on the morphological properties of the fly ash such as shape, relative opacity, coloration, cenosphere and plerosphere. The spherical fly ash might be generated at the condition of complete combustion. The size of fly ash was found to be increased the with particle-particle interaction of agglomeration and coagulation. Fly ash consisted of $SiO_2\;Al_2O_3\;and\;Fe_2O_3$ with 85% and carbon with 3~10% of total mass.

  • In this study,we conducted an injection molding analysis of metal powder materials for the development of flanges, which are necessary adapters for optical communication. The metal powder injection molding process is a technique for producing an injection molded article having a complicated shape by mixing ceramic or stainless powder and binders. It is used to produce products which require complex processing technology or for which the productivity is low. The purpose of this study is to minimize the manufacturing processing of products which are manufactured through existing mechanical processing procedures. For the injection molding analysis, we mixed stainless STS316 metal powder with binders at a ratio of 6 to 4 to make molding materials consisting of granular pellets. Then, three-dimensional modeling and meshing were carried out to obtain the optimal injection molding analysis conditions(molding temperature, melting temperature, injection time, injection temperature, injection pressure, packing time and cooling time). As a result of the analysis, it was discovered that the inlet became available 13.29 seconds after the first injection. Also, as the flowing and packing in the melt through the sprue, runner and gate were stable, it is expected that good molds can be manufactured.

  • Extended Depth of Focus (EDF) algorithms for extracting three-dimensional (3D) information from a set of optical image slices are studied by many researches recently. Due to the limited depth of focus of the microscope, only a small portion of the image slices are in focus. Most of the EDF algorithms try to find the in-focus area to generate a single focused image and a 3D depth image. Inherent to most image processing algorithms, the EDF algorithms need parameters to be properly initialized to perform successfully. In this paper, we select three popular transform-based EDF algorithms which are each based on pyramid, wavelet transform, and complex wavelet transform, and study the performance of the algorithms according to the initialization of its parameters. The parameters we considered consist of the number of levels used in the transform, the selection of the lowest level image, the window size used in high frequency filter, the noise reduction method, etc. Through extended simulation, we find a good relationship between the initialization of the parameters and the properties of both the texture and 3D ground truth images. Typically, we find that a proper initialization of the parameters improve the algorithm performance 3dB ~ 19dB over a default initialization in recovering the 3D information.

  • A stone seated bodhisattva (Sinsu5971) was discovered in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do in 1974 and was transferred to the Chuncheon National Museum upon its opening in 2002. The statue had damage to wide areas and was thus difficult to restore. This study utilized 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies to identify the overall form of the statue and the degree of damage, which allowed the restoration of lost portions that otherwise could not have been accurately restored to their original shape. Prior to the conservation treatment, the pigments used to decorate the surface were investigated using an optical microscope, and their main components were analyzed with a p-XRF (Potable X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer). The deteriorated lacquered surface was stabilized using animal glue and consolidated with stone strengthener (OH-100). The investigation found that the surface of the statue was made of zeolite that was lacquered and then gilded. As for pigments, white lead was used for the white color and red lead and cinnabar were used for red. The lost portions were redesigned by mirroring the remaining parts with 3D technologies. However, it was difficult to affix the 3D printing outputs to the statue without visible gaps since the damaged parts suffered flection. The portions of the outputs to be connected to the statue were thus modified and supplemented. It was also difficult to collect data on the properties of 3D printing materials due to the lack of previous in-depth study. These obstacles are subjects for further study.

  • The asbestos contents in some representative building materials were analyzed using JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The changes in mineral composition during analysis process and problems in JIS method were also examined. XRD analysis of some representative domestic building materials used for roof, wall, ceiling, and floor indicates that slate have the highest asbestos content having 6.87~6.93% of chrysotile. Other building materials analyzed in this study also have 1.35~3.98% of chrysotile contents. The XRD analysis results of asbestos contents in some domestic building materials are presented in this study. This method is very effective for the asbestos content evaluation of building materials according to newly modified asbestos content regulation (Law of Industrial Safety and Health, 2007-26) that limits asbestos content less than 0.1% by Ministry of Employment and Labor. Small amount of tremolite as well as chrysotile were also observed in some samples. With consideration of crystal shape, contents and geological occurrence, it is considered that tremolite is an associated mineral of chrysotile and is not intentionally added. Complemental analyses with optical microscope and SEM/EDS are also necessary because XRD method cannot distinguish asbestiform from non-asbestiform. The XRD method applied in this study is very effective in the asbestos content analysis of building materials, specially building materials showing high asbestos concentration in residues due to the high loss rate with ashing and acid dissolution procedure.
