Reflecting on own beliefs about teaching and learning, developed during "the apprenticeship of observation", is a central task for pre-service years. This case study analysed a lesson observation course which could identify, challenge pre-service teachers' folk pedagogy about classroom communications and induce to change of beliefs about teaching and learning. Our analysis shows that targeting and refuting pre-service teachers' specific belief may be an effective strategy for teacher educators to foster new teaching practice.
This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the observation ability and scientific creativity of elementary students through observation learning of outdoor plants and to identify the factors that influence the two constructs. The study recruited 21 fifth-graders in Seoul. After evaluating observation ability and scientific creativity through observation tasks, qualitative data were obtained through interviews with students about their observation of the plants. Additionally, the study collected various materials, such as the observation records and worksheets of the students to verify the validity of research. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the students were first classified into four groups according to levels of observation ability and scientific creativity. The result demonstrated that the higher the level of observation ability, the higher the level of scientific creativity. Second, observation ability and scientific creativity pointed to a positive correlation. Furthermore, originality, which is one of the components of scientific creativity, indicated a weak positive correlation with observation ability. Third, the factors that influenced observation ability were frequency of plant observation and interest and cooperation in observation learning, and those of scientific creativity were observation ability and the level of plant-related knowledge. Lastly, the study discussed educational methods for improving observation ability and scientific creativity.
The increased turbidity in rivers during flood events has various effects on water environmental management, including drinking water supply systems. Thus, prediction of turbid water is essential for water environmental management. Recently, various advanced machine learning algorithms have been increasingly used in water environmental management. Ensemble machine learning algorithms such as random forest (RF) and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) are some of the most popular machine learning algorithms used for water environmental management, along with deep learning algorithms such as recurrent neural networks. In this study GBDT, an ensemble machine learning algorithm, and gated recurrent unit (GRU), a recurrent neural networks algorithm, are used for model development to predict turbidity in a river. The observation frequencies of input data used for the model were 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 120 and 168 h. The root-mean-square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR) of GRU and GBDT ranges between 0.182~0.766 and 0.400~0.683, respectively. Both models show similar prediction accuracy with RSR of 0.682 for GRU and 0.683 for GBDT. The GRU shows better prediction accuracy when the observation frequency is relatively short (i.e., 2, 4, and 8 h) where GBDT shows better prediction accuracy when the observation frequency is relatively long (i.e. 48, 120, 160 h). The results suggest that the characteristics of input data should be considered to develop an appropriate model to predict turbidity.
The enhancement of inquiry skills has been emphasized as a important objective of science education for a long time. Of these, the observation is not only a simple and basic skill, but also a very important skill, in aspect of gathering informations about the nature of all things around us, through interaction between the sense organs of body and objectives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the results of observations about the grasshopper(Oxya chinesis), made by the elementary student from the 3rd to the 6th grade, and to make use of them as the basic materials for the observative teaming and the evaluation of the observation ability. Through this study, the collected items of observation are as follows For grasshopper, a total of observation items is 95, 70 using the sight sense, 13 using the tactile sense,7 using the olfactory sense. 3 using the palate sense and 2 using the auditory sense. In this study, the findings of elementary student's observation are as follows. 1. On the whole, most of students have observed mainly by the sight and the tactile sense, when observing the grasshopper. 2. It is showed a tendency that the observation ability of student is increased with the higher grade in elementary school. 3. As the grade ascends. the observations with operating are increased, also the quantitative expression and interpretation about them are increased. 4. In the case of same grade, there is no significant difference between students' gender, though girls' ability of the observation showed somewhat higher than boys' 5. Occasionally, the interpretations on the observative facts made by student, are inaccurate. Basis on the above results, we suggested some directions for the improvement of the observative learning program in science classroom of elementary school. First, the teacher have to serve as a guide and encouragement in the observative learning class, to be accomplished the various observation, which all the sensory organ can be used by student than the sight sense. Second, to get elevated the ability of observation, it is necessary that some experimental tools(magnifying lens, stereoscope, auxiliary implements etc.) are utilized. Third, the teacher have to make often endeavors showing an example of operation, to be activated the atmosphere of operative observation.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of an explicit word instruction for EFL beginning readers and their perception on the learning experience. Data were attained from 16 fourth graders who took English class as a development activity. Data include the results of pre- and post-test of high frequency sight word recognition, oral reading ability, students' survey responses, and teacher observation. The descriptive statistics were obtained for the result of the pre- and post-test. The findings from the student survey and teacher observation were also provided and interpreted to better understand the result of project and students' perception on the learning experience. The followings are the results of this study. The word recognition ability of the students was dramatically improved after the project. The students were satisfied with the overall learning experience perceiving it as helpful and fun learning. They expressed that the explicit word instruction helped their word recognition and reading ability. The results also supported that the confidence of students on their reading ability were heightened. Several suggestions are made for teachers and researchers on the word instruction for young EFL learners who are beginning readers.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare satisfaction of practice and clinical skill in different participation learning and observation learning, and to offer the basic data to promote quality of nursing education. Method: The study used a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group post-test design. The subjects were 62 nursing students of K college in Jeonbuk, and the period of data gathering was limited from 19 Nov. 2006 to 30 Nov. 2006. Experience group was taught by hand-on education and control group was taught by conventional education. The instrument tools included self-efficacy, satisfaction of practice and clinical skill. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS-PC programme. Result: The results of this study were as follows: There was statistically a significance difference between the two group about satisfaction of practice(t=2.011 p=.043), and clinical skill(t=11.997, p=.000). Self-efficacy showed a significantly positive correlation with satisfaction of practice(r=.476, p=.000) and clinical skill(r=.178, p=.014). Also, satisfaction of practice showed a significantly positive correlation with clinical skill(r=.l82, p=.000). Conclusion: In conclusion, this study suggests that hand-on education is an effective learning method to nursing students. By utilizing hand-on education, makes nursing students plan self-directed nursing performance and improve their clinical skills.
This study was conducted to see how science classes using astronomical observations software could affect elementary students' scientific learning motivations and academic achievements. For this, 24 sixth graders of G Elementary School were designated as experimental groups to provide classes in which astronomical observation software was used. The experimental treatment period was 4 weeks and the results were as follows. First, elementary science classes that used astronomical observation software were effective in boosting scientific learning motivation. Second, elementary science classes that used astronomical observation software were effective in enhancing academic achievements. From these study results, we could confirm that elementary science classes that used astronomical observation software were effective for elementary school students' motivation and academic achievements.
This study was intended to answer the question, 'What kinds of effects will be aroused by experiential learning for environment based on living area?'. Experiential learning for environment was operated to 17 elementary school students in 4th grade in Kyeong-san city. The results were drawn analyzing the mind map for the changes of environmental consciousness before and after learning, and they are as below. First, it had an effect to change the meaning association of the relationship between 'river and me'. Meaning association was 'river-a thing' before experiential learning, but it was developed as 'river-a thing-me' after learning. This means that students expanded understanding of the world that they were belonging and self-spatialization was promoted. The expansion of meaning association would be a start point and a method to promote their segmentation for each student. Second, students could self-directly modify misconception and preconception after experiential learning. It showed that students could find meanings in the world that they were belonging by experiential learning for environment, and misconception obtained by concept learning without actual situation could be revised through the truth recognition in meanings, and student could see what things displayed. Therefore preconception would be corrected. Of course, everything would not be completed by just one time of experiential learning, and consistent experience learning should be operated. Third, experiential learning promoted the change of sensitivity. Students had shallow sensitivity, which appeared in the relation with things, since having learned only inside of class without a direct observation. However their sensitivity could be increased by experiencing specific things. Fourth, there was the change of classification recognition. Students found properties of things with a direct observation. It raised their ability to classify things, and to understand an individual thing in 'a class'.
The purpose of this study was to find the effects of RSM-based astronomical observation program about Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning for the Scientific Gifted Students. For this purpose, this research developed RSM-based astronomical observation program. This program was totally consisted 10 lessen. there was 3 part in this program. It contained Preparation Stage (step 1-2), Observation Stage (step 3-8), Clean up Stage (step 9-10). To find the effects of RSM-based astronomical observation program on Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning for Scientific Gifted Students. 20 participants was selected. these students were attended at a scientific gifted class(5th grade) of an elementary school located in Ulsan. First, Astronomical Spatial Concept was used to find the effect of the Astronomical Observation program based RSM. And the results were analyzed by SPSSWIN 18.0. The results of this study were as follows. First, RSM-based astronomical observation program was a positive effects on Astronomical Spatial Concept of the Scientific Gifted Students (t=3,875, p=.001). Second, RSM-based astronomical observation program was a positive effects on Self-Directed Learning of the Scientific Gifted Students (t=5.783, p=.000). According to this research, RSM-based astronomical observation program was verified to improve Astronomical Spatial Concept and Self-Directed Learning on the Scientific Gifted Students. It will be contribute on the curriculum construction of the gifted school or gifted class.
This paper proposes a constructive algorithm for generating the Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy model through the sequential learning from training data set. The proposed algorithm has a two-stage learning scheme that performs both structure and parameter learning simultaneously. The structure learning constructs fuzzy model using two growth criteria to assign new fuzzy rules for given observation data. The parameter learning adjusts the parameters of existing fuzzy rules using the LMS rule. To evaluate the performance of the proposed fuzzy modeling approach, well-known benchmark is used in simulation and compares it with other modeling approaches.
