  • This study was performed to investigate the interrelationship between fasting serum insulin, eating behaviour, daily energy intake and the fatness in obese and non-obese women. The possibility of fasting serum insulin as potential predictive factor for eating behaviour and daily energy intake was also investigated. The results are as follows: 1) In obese women ; Subjects with higher fasting serum insulin were associated with higher speed of eating and shorter meal duration time. No association could be found between daily energy intake or the degree of obesity and fasting serum insulin. There was a significant positive correlation between obesity, daily energy intake and speed of eating. Obesity, daily energy intake were negatively related to meal duration time. Subjects with a rapid speed of eating were apt to overeat during eating behaviour experiment. Our findings suggested that a rapid speed of eating is a contributing factor to the development of obesity in obese women. 2) In non-obese women ; While subjects with higher insulin level were apt to overeat, we could not find any relation between overeating and daily energy intake. There was no correlation between eating speed and daily energy intake, but a significant positive correlation was found between meal duration time and daily energy intake. The degree of fatness was increased with the lower daily energy expenditure per body weight, or the higher waist hip girth ratio, fasting serum insulin and daily energy intake.

  • This study was carried out to provide information on the related factors for child obesity through investigation of children aged 6-12. Data was obtained on family history, dietary habits and physical examinations. Children were classified into normal(98 persons) and obese (108 persons) groups using combinations of the height f3r age, weight fir age, and weight fir height standards used by the World Health Organization. Children's height, weight and BMI showed significant differences between groups except children aged 8 for height. Birth weight, breast feeding and unbalanced diet were not associated with obesity. Overeating was a risk factor in the obese group(Odd ratio : 3.417, 95% CI 1.879-6.212). Taking nutrition pills was correlated to obesity. Odd ratio for taking nutrition pills was 0.109(95% CI : 0.024-0.492) between normal and obese group. Number of brothers didn't have any correlation to obesity. Obesity was not correlated to mother's education level or employmental status. As the result of this study, children's obesity was related to overeating and taking nutrition pills. Therefore, these results suggest that systematic dietary education and continuous parental supervision are necessary to avoid child obesity. (Korean J Nutrition 31(7) : 1158-1164, 1998)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of exercise on oxidative stress, nerve growth, and hepatocyte growth factors in obese children. After 12 weeks of aerobic exercise training, the aforementioned parameters before and after the training were compared. As a result, the nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were shown to be lower in the OT than in the NT before and after the training, respectively ($p$ <0.05). The NGF was shown to have increased in both groups after the training ($p$ <0.05). The hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was shown to be higher in the OT than in the NT before the training ($p$ <0.05), with no difference found afterwards. The malondialdehyde (MDA), ox-LDL, and 8-OHdG (Oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine) were shown to be higher in the OT than in the NT ($p$ <0.05). For ox-LDL, a difference was found between before and after the training ($p$ <0.05). The results of this study showed that obesity induced oxidative stress and caused the abnormalities of nerve and HGF secretion in obese children, and that the 12 weeks of aerobic exercise increased NGF levels, thereby promoting the development of neurogenesis in children.

  • This study classified the body shapes of Korean obese women and investigated the differences of each body shape, using 2004 Size Korea data. For selecting the obesity sample, 7 obesity judgment indices were chosen through previous clothing-related studies. A total of 636 females defined as "obese" by 5 out of 7 indices were selected as subjects and 54 body measurements and obesity judgment indices were used in this study. Firstly, mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum values of each measurement and item were obtained from the descriptive analysis of 53 measurements. According to the descriptive analysis, all measurements and obesity judgment indices of the subjects demonstrated a serious obesity level shown by BMI 27.11, R$\ddot{o}$hrer index 1.76, Vervaeck index 104.77, Relative weight 133.00, WHR 0.90, and waist circumference 86.71cm. In addition, the measurements and indices showed considerable differences between minimum and maximum values. Significant differences were identified in all measurements and items at a significant level, p=.001. Each distribution of body types according to age, stature, bust, and waist circumference groups was provided in this study. Secondly, factor analyses were conducted using 38 measurement items to extract the body characteristics of obese women. Factor 1 was "circumference measurements & obesity judgment indices," Factor 2 was "heights & arm-related lengths," and Factor 3 was "size and ratio of waist circumference & hip circumference." Factor 4 was "lengths in upper body," Factor 5 was "back width in upper body," Factor 6 was "side neck point to bust & bust circumference," Factor 7 was "length in lower body & arm circumferences" and Factor 8 was "neck base circumference & front width in upper body." These 8 factors explained 76.54% of the total variance. Finally, 5 body types were selected in the cluster analysis. Type 1 (with big back widths & arm circumferences) was 15.5% of the entire subjects, Type 2 (the shortest and fattest, with big upper body) was 18.8%, Type 3 (with big breast) was 27.8%, Type 4 (the tallest and longest in arm lengths, with the smallest arm circumferences and lengths in torso) was 22.5%, and Type 5 (with big hips compared to waist circumferences, smaller height and upper body) was 15.5%. Fundamental differences were identified in all measurements and items at the significant level of p=.001. In addition, each distribution of body type according to age, height, bust, and waist circumference groups was provided in this study.

  • This study aims to determine the characteristics of new senior women's torso shapes. The data was collected from the 7th Size Korea, which analyzed 412 women between the ages of 55-69. A factor analysis was performed based on 20 indices, including eight based on circumference, eight based on height and length measurements, and four based on torso flattening. The results of the factor analysis suggest five main factors: torso silhouette, longitudinal size of the body, torso flattening rate, abdominal shape, and posterior longitudinal size. The results of the cluster analysis suggest three overall types: Type 1 is the inverted triangular obese shape which is characterized by large breasts, small buttocks, a short height, and a forward-bending posture; Type 2 is the rectangular, slim shape which is characterized by a forward neck and a flat front and back of the torso, and is the most slender among the three types; Type 3 is the large rectangular, overall obese shape, which is characterized by a round shape with large breasts, waist, and buttocks, and a forward-bending posture with a protruding back, and this is the most obese type. According to the results of the cross-tabulation, women aged 55-59 showed no trend in body shape; women aged 60-64 showed an increases in the inverted triangular obese shape and the large rectangular, overall obese shape; women aged 65-69 showed an increase in the large rectangular, overall obese shape and a decrease in the rectangular slim shape. In summary, new senior women showed body shape characteristics of being short, more obese having, a bent over posture. As they grew older, the curves disappeared, and the body becomes rounder. The study found that variation in body shape exists among new senior women in the aged society.

  • The purpose of this study to compare of clinical profile between obese and nonobese type 2 diabetic patients. The subjects were consist of 111 obese (50 male, 61 female) and 159 non obese (79 male, 80 female) type 2 diabetic patients underwent fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, $HbA_1c$, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, microalbuminuria, fasting C-peptide and 2-hour postprandial C-peptide were measured. Diabetes was diagnosed according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria. Obesity was defined as body mass index (BMI, kilograms per meters squared) ${\geq}23$. Data analyses were t-test, chisquare test in SAS program. The results were as follows : 1) Triglycerides and 2-hour postprandial C-peptide were significant higher in obese than non-obese patients. 2) Systolic blood pressure, Diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, $HbA_1c$, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, microalbuminuria and fasting C-peptide were no difference between obese and non-obese groups. These data indicate that obesity is a risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) in diabetic patients. Therefore, weight reductions have beneficial effects on insulin action and glycemic control in obese type 2 diabetic patients.

  • Zinc may participate in blood pressure regulation and in the pathogenesis of hypertension. The study examined the relationship between zinc status and blood pressure in obese Korean women. Forty obese women (body mass index (BMI) ${\geq}25kg/m^2$) aged 19-28 years participated in this study. Zinc intake was estimated from one 24 hour recall and 2-day diet records. Serum and urinary zinc concentrations were determined by atomic absorbance spectrophotometry. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured using an automatic sphygmometer. Metabolic variables, such as waist circumference, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin, were also measured. Dietary zinc intake of obese women was averagely 7.5 mg/day. Serum zinc and urinary zinc concentrations were $13.4{\mu}mol/L$ and $378.7{\mu}g/day$, respectively. Averages of SBP and DBP were 119 mmHg and 78 mmHg. Dietary zinc intake was negatively correlated with SBP after adjusting for energy intake (P < 0.05), but serum and urinary zinc concentrations were not found to be correlated with SBP or DBP. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with SBP in obese women after adjusting for body weight, energy intake and sodium intake (P = 0.0145). The results show that dietary zinc intake may be an independent risk factor of elevated SBP in obese Korean women.
