Damage estimation methods are classified into two groups according to the dependence on the FE model : signal-based and model-based methods. Signal-based damage estimation methods are generally appropriate for detection of damage location, whereas not effective for estimation of damage severities. Model-based damage estimation methods are difficult to apply directly to the structures with a large number of the probable damaged members. It is difficult to obtain the exact model representing the real bridge behavior due to the modeling errors. The modeling errors even may exceed the modal sensitivity on damage. In this study, Model-based damage detection method which can effectively consider the modeling errors is suggested. Two numerical example analyses on a simple beam and a multi-girder bridge are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method.
Three methods for design sensitivity such as numerical differentiation, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis is exact, it is hard to implement for practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable for most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included especially in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis. Thus semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure for the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and computational technique is proposed, which evaluates the pseudo-load for design sensitivity analysis easily by using the design variation of corresponding internal nodal forces. Errors in semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis are examined and numerical examples are illustrated to confirm the reduction of numerical error considerably.
Proposed in this paper is a method of measurement of the flow rate in a pipe. The sound waves which are propagated within a pipe are characterized by that the wavenumber in the axial direction is changed according to the flow rate, and these characteristics are used in the present method of measurement of the flow rate. The amount of change in wavenumber of sound waves according to the flow rate can be obtained from the relationship among acoustic pressure signals within a pipe, which are measured by using a microphone array. The flow rate can be obtained by using the amount of change in wavenumber of sound waves and the relational equation of the flow rate. With respect to errors that can occur during the measurement of the flow rate, the types of errors and the method of correction of those errors are presented. This method of measurement of the flow rate has application limitation conditions due to the sensor interval, assumption of sound waves as plane waves, etc. The numerical simulation and experiments for measuring the flow rate of air in a pipe are performed in order to verify the applicability of this method of measurement of the flow rate. The experimental results are shown to be similar to those of the numerical simulation. And the flow rate measured is shown to be consistent with the actual value within 5% error bound.
The stiffness of 6-node isotropic element is stiffer than that of 8-node isotropic element of same configuration. This phenomenon was called 'Relative Stiffness Stiffening Phenomenon'. In this paper, an equation of sampling point modification which correct this phenomenon was derived for the composite plate, as well as an equation for an isotropic plate. The relative stiffness stiffening phenomena of an isotropic plate element could be corrected by modifying Gauss sampling points in the numerical integration of stiffness matrix. This technique could also be successfully applied to the static analyses of composite plate modeled by the 3-dimensional 16-node elements. We predicted theoretical errors of stiffness versus the number of layers that result from the reduction of numerical integration order. These errors coincide very well with the actual errors of stiffness. Therefore, we can choose full integration of reduced integration based upon the permissible error criterion and the number of layers by using the thoretically predicted error.
Numerical integration is an efficient approach for nonlinear dynamic analysis. In this paper, general category of the implicit integration errors will be discussed. In order to decrease the errors, Dynamic Relaxation method with modified time step (MFT) will be used. This procedure leads to an alternative algorithm which is very general and can be utilized with any implicit integration scheme. For numerical verification of the proposed technique, some single and multi degrees of freedom nonlinear dynamic systems will be analyzed. Moreover, results are compared with both exact and other available solutions. Suitable accuracy, high efficiency, simplicity, vector operations and automatic procedures are the main merits of the new algorithm in solving nonlinear dynamic problems.
Errors included in solutions obtained by the boundary element method are generally larger than those by the finite element method in the case that the number of discreted elements is small. One of the reasons is supposed to be attributed to the error which will be produced in the numerical integration of the singular functions in two dimensional elastic problem. Then, treatment of analytical integration to reduce computing time and to decrease errors of boundary element method are proposed.
In general, the cutting pattern of the membrane structures is determined by dividing the complicated curved 3-D surface into several 2-D plane strip by using flattening technique. In this procedure, however, some discrepancies ore occurred between actual stresses of equilibrated state and designed uniform stresses because the material properties are not considered. These deviations can cause the critical structural problems, wrinkling or overstress, and thus a optimization process should be considered. In this paper, a new analytical method for determining an optimum cutting pattern considering material properties is presented. Here, iterative procedure is introduced to decrease the errors caused in numerical process. The optimization method proposed can diminish the deviations occurred by material properties and numerical errors, simultaneously. As a results, it is shown that the final stress distributions for the HP shell model are sufficiently near to design stress distributions, and it can be concluded that this method can be used to obtain the optimized cutting pattern of membrane structures.

Nowadays, the road safety is an important research field. One of the principal research topics in this field is the vehicle localization in the road network. This article presents an approach of multi sensor fusion able to locate a vehicle with a decimeter precision. The different informations used in this method come from the following sensors: a low cost GPS, a numeric camera, an odometer and a steer angle sensor. Taking into account a complete model of errors on GPS data (bias on position and nonwhite errors) as well as the data provided by an original approach coupling a vision algorithm with a precise numerical map allow us to get this precision.
Through the combination of existing tidal prediction model and numerical tidal model, the efficient tidal prediction system was formulated and applied to the neighboring area of Pusan port. Because all tidal constituents for tidal prediction (69 tidal constituents are normally used) couldn't be considered due to the physical limits on computing process, some errors between the observed and predicted values were inevitably occurred. But it was confirmed that the computed values with maximum 10% of relative errors can be obtained if four major tidal constituents(M2, S2, K1, O1) are used. Thus, if other constituents than four major tidal constituents are additionally used, more accurate values will be obtained. Furthermore, if the database for harmonic constants in coastal waters is made in advance, using the numerical tidal model, prompt tidal prediction can be achieved at any time when it is required.
