Effect of nozzle diameter on the reduction of smoke emission from naval ship diesel engines (함정용 디젤엔진의 노즐 직경 변화가 매연 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Legislative and regulatory actions regarding the exhaust gas from ships are being strengthened by both international organizations and national governments, to protect human health and the environment. Exhaust gas traps are excluded from exhaust gas regulation applications, but, recently, the United States, Britain, and other developed countries have examined a variety of ways to improve the system, including the introduction of electric propulsion systems to prevent air pollution generated by naval ships. This study investigates a large number of smoke problems of naval diesel engines to verify the effect of improving the nozzle characteristics. An exhaust gas emission measurement method to determine the quality of pollutant exhaust gas generated during low-load operation is proposed through the research methodology of the smoke problem. It was confirmed that the emissions value is improved by decreasing the nozzle hole diameter and increasing the injection pressure. At the same time, the flow rate decrease equation and setting up a test memo based on the nozzle diameter confirmed that the fuel consumption, to which the nozzle diameter in the flow path is related, is reduced.

  • The function of Feed Water Ring is to provide the flow path from Feedwater Nozzle to inside of SG(steam generator). Significant amounts of general FAC on the outside of the Feed Water Ring are not likely due to the low flow velocities in this area. However, on the interior of the Feed Water Ring, there may be areas of local higher flow velocity which could lead to higher FAC rates. These may include the inlet tee from the Feedwater Nozzle into the Feed Water Ring, the areas where the Feed Water Ring changes diameter, and especially the entrance area to the J-Nozzles. In this paper, the results of root cause analysis of through-wall hole observed at domestic WH 51F SG Feed Water Ring and its effect on the integrity and performance of SG are described. And, the maintenance strategy for WH 51F SG Feed Water Ring and the monitoring strategy for Downcomer Feed Water Ring of CE System 80 SG are presented.

Design of Velocity and Pressure Compounded Impulse Turbine (속도 및 압력 복합형 충동 터빈 설계)

  • Design of velocity-compounded turbine for 75ton class LRE turbopump application and pressure compounded turbine for 30ton class LRE turbopump has been performed. 1D calculation and CFD analysis were conducted in determining blade and flow passage shape of velocity compounded turbine iteratively. Finally, 23.1% improved specific power and 5% reduced weight turbine to the original design was developed. In case of pressure-compounded supersonic turbine design, rotational speed was increased by 50% and the effect of carryover ratio, 2nd nozzle installation angle, leakage flow of 2nd nozzle, and work sharing factor was studied. Final 1D design resulted 36% increased specific power and 51% reduced weight comparing to the original single-row impulse turbine. It is anticipated that nozzle flow path design will be very important for the accomplishment of expected performance of pressure-compounded turbine and nozzle shape optimization will be conducted through the CFD analysis.

  • This study presents numerical solutions of three-dimensional laminar flow-field formed by photo resist flow in a slit-coater model. We discuss on the governing equations, laminar viscosities and the computational model applied in our numerical calculation and some results. We prove that the structure of tapered-cavity aid to make uniform pressure-field and boundary effect is an important problem to improve coating uniformity. In view of uniformity improvement, it is necessary to study for the structure of cavity and flow path.

  • Numerical analysis was performed on the shock wave-boundary layer interaction generated in the internal flow path of the curved interstage of the scramjet engine flight test vehicle. For numerical analysis, the turbulence model k-ω SST was used in the compressibility Raynolds Averaged Navier Stokes(RANS) equation. Representatively, the separation bubbles on the upper wall of the nozzle, the interaction between the concave shock wave and the boundary layer, and the shock wave-shock wave interaction at the edge were captured. The analysis result visualizes the shock wave-boundary layer interaction of the curved internal flow path to enhance understanding and suggest design considerations.

  • Experimental investigations were conducted to examine the combustion characteristics of a swirl-stabilized double cone premixed burner nozzle used for industrial gas turbines for power generation. Several variants with different fuel injection patterns are tested to compare the combustion characteristics such as NOx and CO emissions, stability, and wall temperature distributions. Main results show that NOx emissions and stability are decreased either when the fuel hole diameter is decreased with the same number of fuel holes, or when the number of fuel holes is reduced with the same total area of fuel holes, both of which are due to a higher penetration of fuel into the air stream. Not only is NOx reduced but also stability is enhanced when the fuel hole diameter varies in an alternating manner with the same total area of fuel holes, showing that NOx reduction is due to a higher penetration of mean fuel injection path while stability enhancement is due to a lowered penetration of minimum fuel injection path.

  • A unified numerical analysis including combustion was conducted in order to study on performance of ramjet propulsion. The geometry of concern includes the entire flow path of a ramjet extending from intake to exhaust nozzle. Acceleration mode and cruise mode were considered in several equivalence ratios. Pressure distributions, terminal shock train range at the intake, temperature distributions in the combustors, and fuel mass fraction at the nozzle exit were investigated for each flight mode.

  • In this paper, we represented the structural design parameter effect on the sealing gap behavior of solid rocket motor case and nozzle connection under penetrated pressure through the sealing path between insulation rubber and the ablative FRP bonded on the inside convergent wall of nozzle. It is important to keep the good sealing capacity during all the combustion time of SRM. To achieve the crucial role of sealing system of SRM, designers must consider design factors for stable sealing clearance gap as the nearly unchanged initial design state as possible for sufficient compression rate of O-ring under sealing gap pressure.

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.

A Study on the Mechanical behavior of 3D Printed Short-Fiber Reinforced Composite Structures using AM-Structural Coupled Analysis (AM 공정 연계 구조 해석을 활용한 단섬유 강화 복합소재 3D 프린팅 출력물의 기계적 거동 특성 분석)

  • In this paper, additive manufacturing (AM)-structural coupled analysis was proposed to accurately predict the mechanical behavior of 3D printed short-fiber reinforced composite structures. Tensile specimens were printed using a composite 3D printer (Mark Two, Markforged), and tensile tests were conducted on specimens manufactured with various nozzle paths. In addition, a reverse engineering scheme was applied to the experimental data to reasonably derive local anisotropic material properties according to the nozzle paths. Consequently, AM-structural coupled analysis was performed using the enhanced finite element model with mapped local materials properties, and the mechanical behavior of the 3D printed short-fiber reinforced composite was accurately described. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed AM-structural coupled analysis model, the computational results obtained were compared with experimental results.
