A higher order zig-zag shell theory is developed to refine the predictions of the mechanical and thermal behaviors partially coupled. The in-plane displacement fields are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field through the thickness. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the out-of-plane displacement in order to consider transverse normal deformation and stress. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. Thus the proposed theory has only seven primary unknowns and they do not depend upon the number of layers. In the description of geometry and deformation of shell surface, all rigorous exact expressions are used. Through the numerical examples of partially coupled analysis, the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory are demonstrated. The present theory is suitable in the predictions of deformation and stresses of thick composite shell under mechanical and thermal loads combined.

The loads and resistances are random in nature. It Is thus necessary to consider these variabilities for more reasonable and reliable structural analysis. The purpose of the present study is to develop a stochastic finite element program which can analyze plane structures. The model requires only the means, standard deviations and distribution types of the load and resistance varualbes. This model can determine from the analysis the means and standard deviations of nodal displacement for all nodal points. The implemention results show good agreement at 10% significant level with the simulation results, if material properties and load conditions fallow the normal distribution.
In this study, contact analysis in a functionally graded (FG) layer loaded with two circular punches is solved using the finite element method (FEM). The problem is consisted of a functionally graded layer that resting on an elastic semi-infinite plane and is loaded with two rigid punches of circular geometry. External loads P and Q are transferred to the layer via two rigid punches. The finite element model of the functionally graded layer is created using the ANSYS package program and a 2-dimensional analysis of the problem is analyzed. The contact lengths, obtained as a result of the analysis are compared with the analytical solution in the literature. In the study, the effects of parameters such as distances between punches, loads, inhomogenity parameter on contact zones, initial separation loads and distances, normal stresses, stresses across depth and contact stresses are investigated. As a result, in this study, it can be said that the magnitude of the stresses occurring in the FG layer is less than the homogeneous layer, therefore the life of FG materials will be longer than the homogeneous layer. When the distance between the punches is 2.25, the initial separation distance is 6.98, and when the distance between the punches is 4, the initial separation distance decreases to 6.10. In addition, when the load increased in the second punch, the initial separation load decreased from 55 to 18. The obtained results are presented in the form of graphs and tables.
Reinforced concrete (RC) beams can be subjected to a complex combination of shear forces (V), torsional moments (T), flexural moments (M) and axial loads (N). This paper proposes a unified approach for the analysis of these elements. An existing model for the analysis of orthogonally reinforced concrete membrane elements subjected to in-plane shear and normal stresses is generalized to apply to the case of beams subjected to the complex loading. The combination of V and T can be critical. Torsion is modelled using the hollow-tube analogy. A direct equation for the calculation of the thickness of the equivalent hollow tube is proposed, and the shear stresses caused by V and T are combined using a simple approach. The development and the evaluation of the model are described. The calculations of the model are compared to experimental data from 350 beams subjected to various combinations of stress-resultants and to the calculations of the ACI and the CSA codes. The proposed model provides the most favorable results. It is also shown that it can accurately model the interaction between V and T. The proposed model provides a unified treatment of shear in beams subjected to complex stress-resultants and in thin membrane elements subjected to in-plane stresses.

The present study focuses on the effect of extension-bending coupling on the elastic stability (buckling) of laminated composite plates. These plates will be loaded under uni-axial or bi-axial in-plane mechanical loads, especially in the orthotropic or anti-symmetric cross-angle cases. The main objective is to find a limit where we can approximate the elastic stability behavior of angularly crossed anti-symmetric plates by the simple behavior of specially orthotropic plates. The contribution of my present study is to predict the explicit effect of extension-flexion coupling on the elastic stability of this type of panel. Critically, a parametric study is carried out, involving the search for the critical buckling load as a function of deformation mode, aspect ratio, plate anisotropy ratio and finally the study of the effect of lamination angle and number of layers on the contribution of extension-flexure coupling in terms of plate buckling stability. We use first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) with a correction factor of 5/6. Simply supported conditions along the four boundaries are adopted where we can develop closed-form analytical solutions obtained by a Navier development.

This study aims to investigate the effects of partially distributed loads on the dynamic behaviour of steel parabolic arches by using the elasto-plastic finite element model based on the Von Mises yield criteria and the Prandtl-Reuss How rule. For this purpose, the vertical and the radial load conditions were considered as a distributed loading and the loading range is varied from 40% to 100% of arch span. Normal arch and arch with initial deflection were studied. The initial deflection of arch was assumed by the sinusoidal motile of ${\omega}_i\;=\;{\\omega}_O$ sin ($n{\pi}x/L$). Several numerical examples were tested considering symmetric initial deflection when the maximum initial deflection at the apex is fixed as L/1000. The analysis resluts showed that the maximum deflection at the apex of arch was occurred when 70% of arch span was loaded. The maximum deflection at the quarter point of arch span was occurred when 50% of arch span was loaded. It is known that the optimal rise to span ratio between 0.2 and 0.3 when the vertical or radial distributed load is applied. It is verified that the influence of initial deflection of radial load case is more serious than that of vertical load case.
The plane contact problem for two infinite elastic layers whose elastic constants and heights are different is considered. The layers lying on a Winkler foundation are acted upon by symmetrical distributed loads whose lengths are 2a applied to the upper layer and uniform vertical body forces due to the effect of gravity in the layers. It is assumed that the contact between two elastic layers is frictionless and that only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interface. The contact along the interface will be continuous if the value of the load factor, ${\lambda}$, is less than a critical value. However, interface separation takes place if it exceeds this critical value. First, the problem of continuous contact is solved and the value of the critical load factor, ${\lambda}_{cr}$, is determined. Then, the discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation. Numerical solutions for contact stress distribution, the size of the separation areas, critical load factor and separation distance, and vertical displacement in the separation zone are given for various dimensionless quantities and distributed loads.

In many dynamic problems such as foundation vibrations ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation and blasting analysts are confronted with the problem of wave propagation in an infinite or semi-infinite media. In order to simulate this situation by a finite analytical model provisions must be made to absorb the stress waves arriving at the boundary. Absorbing boundaries are mathematical artifacts used to prevent wave reflections at the boundaries of discrete models for infinite media under dynamic loads. An analytical study is carried out to examine the effectiveness of Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer model one of the most widely used absorbing boundaries. Validity of the absorbing boundary conditions suggested by Lymer-Kuhlemeyer is examined by adopting the solution of Ewing et al. to the problem of plane waves from a harmonic normal force on the surface of an elastic half-space. The Ewing's problem is than numerically simulated using the finite element method on a semi-circular mesh with and without absorbing boundaries which are represented by viscous dashpots. The absorption ratios are calculated by comparing the displacements at the absorbing boundaries to those at the free field without absorbing boudaries.

In this paper, based on an isogeometric approach, we have developed a shape design optimization method for plane elasticity problems subjected to design-dependent loads. The conventional shape optimization using the finite element method has some difficulties in the parameterization of geometry. In an isogeometric analysis, however, the geometric properties are already embedded in the B-spline basis functions and control points so that it has potential capability to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. The solution space for the response analysis can be represented in terms of the same NURBS basis functions to represent the geometry, which yields a precise analysis model that exactly represents the normal and curvature depending on the applied loads. A continuum-based isogeometric adjoint sensitivity is extensively derived for the plane elasticity problems under the design-dependent loads. Through some numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity analysis method is verified to show excellent agreement with finite difference sensitivity.
A unified formulation of finite layer methods (FLMs), based on the Reissner mixed variational theorem (RMVT), is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) coupled electro-elastic analysis of simply-supported, functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) plates with open- and closed-circuit surface conditions and under electro-mechanical loads. In this formulation, the material properties of the plate are assumed to obey an exponent-law varying exponentially through the thickness coordinate, and the plate is divided into a number of finite rectangular layers, in which the trigonometric functions and Lagrange polynomials are used to interpolate the in- and out-of-plane variations of the primary field variables of each individual layer, respectively, such as the elastic displacement, transverse shear and normal stress, electric potential, and normal electric displacement components. The relevant orders used for expanding these variables in the thickness coordinate can be freely chosen as the linear, quadratic and cubic orders. Four different mechanical/electrical loading conditions applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate are considered, and the corresponding coupled electro-elastic analysis of the loaded FGPM plates is undertaken. The accuracy and convergence rate of the RMVT-based FLMs are assessed by comparing their solutions with the exact 3D piezoelectricity ones available in the literature.
