  • In designing of the wind power facilities, the highest and lowest astronomical tides (HAT and LAT) are needed in terms of an international design tidal water levels. The AHHW and ALLW, however, have been used as the design tidal levels in Korea. The HAT and LAT in the Wido coastal sea should be estimated to satisfy the standard because the pilot wind power facilities will be located in the adjacent Wido coastal sea. In this study, the HAT and LAT are estimated using the 31-years hourly tidal elevation data of the Wido tidal gauging station and the nodal variation patterns of the major lunar components, such as $M_2$, $O_1$, and $K_1$, are analysed to check the expected long-term lunar cycle, i.e., 18.61-year's nodal variation patterns. The temporal amplitude variations of the $M_2$, $O_1$, and $K_1$ clearly show the 18.61-years periodic patterns in case of the no-nodal correction condition. In addition, the suggested HAT and LAT elevations, estimated as the upper and lower confidence limits of the yearly HAT and LAT elevations, show 40 cm greater than AHHW and 35 cm lower than ALLW, respectively.

  • Background: Accurate intraoperative assessment of mediastinal lymph nodes is a critical aspect of lung cancer surgery. The efficacy and potential for upstaging implicit in these dissections must therefore be revisited in the current era of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in which 544 patients with stage I (T1abc-T2a, N0, M0) primary lung cancer were analyzed. To assess risk factors for nodal upstaging and to limit any imbalance imposed by surgical choices, we constructed an inverse probability of treatment-weighted (IPTW) logistic regression model (in addition to non-weighted logistic models). We also evaluated risk factors for early locoregional recurrence using IPTW logistic regression analysis. Results: In the comparison of uniportal and multiportal VATS, the resected lymph node count (14.03±8.02 vs. 14.41±7.41, respectively; p=0.48) and rate of nodal upstaging (6.5% vs. 8.7%, respectively; p=0.51) appeared similar. Predictors of nodal upstaging included tumor size (odds ratio [OR], 1.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-2.70), carcinoembryonic antigen level (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.04-1.18), and histologically confirmed pleural invasion (OR, 3.97; 95% CI, 1.89-8.34). The risk factors for locoregional recurrence within 1 year were found to be number of resected N2 nodes, age, and nodal upstaging. Conclusion: Uniportal and multiportal VATS appear similar with regard to accuracy and thoroughness, showing no significant difference in the extent of nodal dissection.

  • The pre-evaluation of the current-collection performance is an important issue for high-speed railway vehicles. In this paper, using flexible multibody dynamic analysis techniques, a simulation model of the dynamic interaction between the catenary and pantograph is developed. In the analysis model, the pantograph is modeled as a rigid body, and the catenary wire is developed using the absolute nodal coordinate formulation, which can analyze large deformable parts effectively. Moreover, for the representation of the dynamic interaction between these parts, their relative motions are constrained by a sliding joint. Using this analysis model, the contact force and loss of contact can be calculated for a given vehicle speed. The results are evaluated by EN 50318, which is the international standard with regard to analysis model validation. This analysis model may contribute to the evaluation of high-speed railway vehicles that are under development.

  • Based on the modal coordinates of the structure, a finite-element and CQC (complete quadratic combination) method for analyzing the coupled buffeting response of long-span bridges is presented. The formulation of nodal equivalent aerodynamic buffeting forces is derived based on a reasonable assumption. The power spectral density and variance of nodal displacements and elemental internal forces of the bridge structure are computed using the finite-element method and the random vibration theory. The method presented is very efficient and can consider the arbitrary spectrum and spatial coherence of natural winds and the multimode and intermode effects on the buffeting responses of bridge structures. A coupled buffeting analysis of the Jiangyin Yangtse River Suspension Bridge with 1385 in main span is performed as an example. The results analyzed show that the multimode and intermode effects on the buffeting response of the bridge deck are quite remarkable.

  • In this paper, the combined system equation of motion, which can analyze the dynamic interaction between pantograph and catenary system, is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. The analysis results are compared with real experiment data from test running of Korean high-speed train (HSR 350x). In addition, a computation method for the dynamic stress of contact wire is presented using the derived system equation of motion. This method might be good example and significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics model can be unified into one numerical system.

  • The loads and resistances are random in nature. It Is thus necessary to consider these variabilities for more reasonable and reliable structural analysis. The purpose of the present study is to develop a stochastic finite element program which can analyze plane structures. The model requires only the means, standard deviations and distribution types of the load and resistance varualbes. This model can determine from the analysis the means and standard deviations of nodal displacement for all nodal points. The implemention results show good agreement at 10% significant level with the simulation results, if material properties and load conditions fallow the normal distribution.

  • A 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator optains its cooling effect from pressure drop by releasing the part of the charged gas through hot end nozzle. The objective of this study is to analyze the performance and to find an optimal expansion pressure of the 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator. It is assumed that gas lumps are not mixed and periodically repeat the adiabatic compression and expansion processes. And the nodal model is applied for the analysis of the regenerator. As the result of analysis, the optimum pressure at the end of expansion process was about 80-90% of the maximum pressure.

  • The effect of liquid level on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a partially liquid-filled circular cylindrical shell with various boundary conditions is investigated by means of a theoretical analysis based upon Fourier series expansion method and a finite element analysis using ANSYS computer program. Two dimensional mode shapes of the liquid-coupled shell structure are obtained by the ANSYS finite element analysis and show that the liquid level affect the nodal point movement. It is found that the variation of normalized naturalfrequencies (natural frequencies of liquid-filled shell/antural frequencies ofempty shell) to the liquid level is depend on the axial mode numbers and circumferential wave numbers. Additionally, it is found that the number of variational steps of normalized natural frequencies is identicial to that of axial nodal points of the mode shape.

  • Recently, a new technique called Electronic Speckle Pattern Inteferometry(ESPI) has been developed to overcome the drawbacks of existing holography. This technique enable real-time interference fringes to be displayed directly on TV monitor without recourse to any form of photographic processing. This research was carried out for the purpose of applying the vibration analysis method employing Electronic Speckle Pattern Interference technique to the vibration analysis of uniform rectangular cantilever plate, The natural vibration frequencies found by ESPI were in fair agreement with theoretical eigen frequencies acquired using theoretical formula G. B. Warburton proposed.

  • The authors have studied vibration analysis algorithm which was suitable to the personal computer. Recently, we presented the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficients which are related to force and displacement vectors at each node. In this paper, we describes the general formulation for the longitudinal and flexural coupled vibration analysis of a beam type structure by the TSCM. And the superiority of the TSCM to the finite element method(FEM) in the computation accuracy, cost and convenience was confirmed by results of the numerical computation and experiment.
