  • The waste solution, which was discharged from the recovery process of LCD etching solution, consists of 15 wt% nitric acid and 20 wt% acetic acid. In this study, it was conducted to separate acid individually from the mixed acid by vacuum evaporation under -760 mmHg gauge and at $40^{\circ}C$. We have investigated evaporation behavior of acid as a function of temperature. There have been problems that tiny amount of nitric acid were evaporated simultaneously above $33^{\circ}C$. Thus, efforts were conducted to recover acetic acid by vacuum evaporation with adding $H_2O$, waste mixed acid and 20 g/L NaOH for a curb on evaporation of nitric acid. By adding $H_2O$, evaporation of nitric acid was reduced from 7% to 0.78%. However, it was reduced from 7% to 0.25% by adding mixed acid. In view of the results achieved so far, we may expect to separate the etching solution individually by controlling vacuum conditions.

  • Spent nuclear fuel is reprocessed commercially by the chemical process to recover U and Pu. Recently, new salt-free reagents to separate plutonium and neptunium from uranium suitable for use in a single cycle flowsheet have been developed. Acetohydroxamic acid $(CH_3CONHOH)$ has been taken much interest in as a complexing agent capable of selective stripping of tetravalent actinides from U(VI) when actinides are present in the solvent stream of the advanced PUREX process. Additionally acetohydroxamic acid will rapidly reduce Np(VI) to inextractable Np(V) thus allowing the separation of Np from U. In this study, the rate equation for the reduction of Np(VI) to Np(V) in nitric acid aqueous solution has been determined as: $-[NpO_2^{2+}]$/dt = $k[NpO_2^{2+}]$[AHA] with k = 191.2 ${\pm}$ 11.2 $M^{-1}s^{-1}$ at 25 ${\pm}$ 0.5 ${^{\circ}C}$ and $[HNO_3]$ = 1.0 M. Comparison with other reductants available in the literature, acetohydroxamic acid is a strong one for $NpO_2^{2+}$.

  • The changes of Np oxidation state in nitric acid and the effect of nitrous acid on the oxidation state were analyzed by spectrophotometry, solvent extraction, and electrochemical methods. An enhancement of Np extraction to 30 vol.% TBP was carried out through adjustment of Np oxidation state by using a glassy carbon fiber column electrode system. The information of electrolytic behavior of nitric acid was important because the nitrous acid affecting the Np redox reaction was generated during the electrolytic adjustment of the Np oxidation state. The Np solution used in this work consisted of Np(V) and Np(Ⅵ)without (IV). The composition of Np(V) in the range of 0.5M -5.5 M nitric acid was 32% ~ 19%. The electrolytic oxidation of Np(V) to Np(Ⅵ)in the solution enhanced Np extraction efficiency about five times higher than the case without the electrolytic oxidation. It was confirmed that the nitrous acid of less than about 10-5 M acted as a catalyst to accelerate the chemical oxidation reaction of Np(V) to Np(Ⅵ).

  • This study was aimed to investigate the relaxation effects of Eucomiae Cortex (EC) extract in isolated rabbit corpus cavernosum smooth muscle and its mechanism. To evaluate the relaxation of EC extract in rabbit corpus cavernosum, EC extract was treated in corporal strips which were precontracted with phenylephrine(PE). To study its mechanism, Nω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) was pretreated after infuse of EC extract and compared with non-treated. In calcium chloride (Ca2+) -free krebs solution, EC extract and Ca2+ 1 mM were infused by turns after Ca2+ 1 mM was treated into corporal strips contracted by PE. Cell ability, nitric oxide (NO) and epithelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) on human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) were measured by MTT assay, Griess reagent system and histochemical, immunohistochemical methods. EC extract showed a significant relaxation effects on the corporal strips, this effects were inhibited by pretreatment of L-NNA. EC extract inhibited the increase of contraction by Ca2+ influx in Ca2+-free krebs solution, and eNOS positive reaction in corpus cavernosum, NO production in HUVEC increased by treatment of EC extract. These result suggest that the relaxation effects of EC extract in isolated corpus cavernosum smooth muscle are involved in increase of eNOS and NO production, blocking of extracellular Ca2+ influx.

  • The simultaneous sensing of nitric oxide (NO) and its metabolite, nitrite $(NO_2^-)$ has been studied by Osteryoung square-wave voltarnmetery (OSWV) in physiological pH solution (0.1 M phosphate buffer solution, pH 7.2). Using an electrochemically pretreated glassy carbon (GC) electrode, OSWV was successfully applied to observe the well-separated oxidation peaks at ca. 0.58 and 0.80V vs. Ag/AgCI for NO and $(NO_2^-)$, respectively. This clear separation between the NO and $(NO_2^-)$ oxidation peaks may be due to the formation of surface oxides (e.g., quinone (C=O) or carboxylic $(COO^-)$ group) and surface defects introduced by the electrochemical pretreatment of GC electrodes.

  • This study aimed to liberate gold from invisible gold concentrate (Au = 1,840.00 g/t) through microwave nitric acid leaching experiments. For the purpose, this study conducted microwave-nitric acid leaching experiments and examined nitric acid concentration effect, microwave leaching time effect and sample addition effect. The results of the experiments were as follows: Au (gold) contents were not detected in all of the microwave leaching conditions. In the insoluble-residue, weight loss rate tended to decrease as the nitric acid concentration, microwave leaching time and sample addition increased. In an XRD analysis with solid-residue, it was suggested that gypsum and anglesite were formed due to dissolution of calcite and galena by nitric acid solution. When a fire assay was carried out with insoluble-residue, it was discovered that gold contents of the solid-residue were 1.3 (Au = 2,464.70 g/t) and 28.8 (52,952.80 g/t) times more than those of concentrate. But in the gold contents recovered, a severe gold nugget effect appeared. It is expected that the gold nugget effect will decrease if a sampling method of concentrate is improved in the microwave-nitric acid leaching experiments and filtering paper with smaller pore size is used for leaching solution and burned filter paper is used for sampling in lead-fire assay.

  • The electrochemical oxidation of cerium(III) was carried out using divided and undivided electrochemical cells in nitric acid medium. It was found that divided cell with Nafion 324 as the separator gave good conversion yield with high current efficiency compared to the undivided cell. The efficiency of the divided electrochemical cell was further optimized in terms of cell voltage, temperature, flow rate of solution recirculation, concentrations of Ce(III) and nitric acid. The better conditions for 1 M Ce(III) in 3 M nitric acid were found to be 2.5 V, 363 K and 100 mL/min recirculation flow rate based on the current efficiency under the experimental conditions investigated. The Ce(IV) oxidant produced was used as a mediator for the mineralization of phenol. The mineralization efficiency of the cerium mediated electrochemical oxidation was found rapid and higher compared to the direct electrochemical oxidation based on CO2 evolution under the same conditions.

  • The separation of zirconium and hafnium using tributyl phosphate (TBP)-Dodecane extractants in nitric acid medium was performed. Zirconium oxychloride, used as extraction feed, was obtained from the synthesis of Kalimantan zircon sand concentrate smelted using NaOH. The extraction process was carried out by dissolving chloride-based metals in nitric acid media in the presence of sodium nitrate using TBP-Dodecane as an extractant. Some of the extraction parameters carried out in this study include variations in organic phase and aqueous phase (O/A), variations in contact time, and variations in nitric acid concentration. Extraction was carried out using a mechanical shaker according to the parameter conditions. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used for elemental (Zr and Hf) composition analysis of the aqueous solution. The results showed that zirconium was separated from hafnium at optimum conditions with an organic/aqueous ratio of 1:5, contact time of 75 min, and an HNO3 concentration of 7 M. The resulting separation factor of zirconium and hafnium using TBP-Dodecane was 14.4887.

  • Phosphoric acid was used as etching agent instead of conventional peroxide - based chemicals for forming pattern of ultra definition display. Etchant was synthesized by mixing etching agent, oxidation agent, buffer solution, and additive into solvent, deionized water. Thicknesses of copper, main metal of ultra definition display, for etching, were 10,000 and $30,000{{\AA}}$. Etch stop of good low skew for proper pattern formation has been occurred at the content ratio of phosphoric acid 60 - 64%, nitric acid 4 - 5%, additive(potassium acetate) 1 - 3%. Buffer solution(acetic acid) decreased the metal contact angle $63.07^{\circ}$ to $42.49^{\circ}$ for benefiting pattern formation. Content variations on four components (phosphoric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, potassium acetic acid) of the etchant with storage time were within 3 wt% after 24 hrs of etching work.
