Analysis of Middle School Students' Stress and Related Variables (청소년 스트레스에 대한 관련 변인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of middle school students' stress in relation to certain variables, those of grade, gender, academic achievement, coping behavior and self-concept. The subjects were 574 students selected from 4 middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments included a stress index, coping behavior questionnaire and self-concept inventory. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA (Scheff test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school students' stress was influenced significantly by the grade, gender and achievement in school. Also, coping behavior and self-concept were influenced significantly by the grade, gender, and achievement in school. Correlation analysis indicated that student's stress and certain coping behavior were postively correlated, especially avoidance coping behavior indicated a higher correlation to students' stress than active coping behavior. The relationship between stress and self-concept indicated a negative high correlation. It was also found that avoidance coping behavior, family self-concept, general self-concept, school and class self-concept, grade and academic achievement were significant predictors of middle school students' stress.

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to compare stress level and stress coping behavior of elementary students in southern and northern area of Han river. Methods: This was a descriptive comparative survey using a convenience sample of 403 5th-and 6th-grade students. The data were analyzed by X2-test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression using SPSS 11.5 statistical program. Results: The level of stress and stress coping behavior according to northern and southern elementary students of seoul, Stress levels tended to increase more significantly with less satisfied life, more study time, in female students than male students. in northern students, and with more individual factors. With regard to stress coping behaviors. students with higher life-satisfaction tended to use active coping, and female students used more positive and mystic coping than negative coping. Conclusion: Students living in northern area, and more female students than male students showed a high level of stress, and students with a higher stress level were better able to cope with stress. Thus, it could be concluded that programs to lower stress levels are needed more than stress intervention programs.

Stress Coping Process in Elderly People: Grounded Theory Approach (노인의 스트레스 대처과정에 대한 근거 이론적 접근)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the stress-coping process used by elderly people. Method: This study was based on the grounded theory methodology of Strauss & Corbin. The participants were 15 elders selected by theoretical sampling. Over a period of 3 months, in-depth interviews using audiotape recording were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed simultaneously by a constant comparative method in which new data were continuously coded in categories and properties according to Strauss and Corbin's methodology, Result: Stress in elderly people is caused by illness, family conflict, and loss of economic power. Stress occurred in connection with aging and limitation of social activity. The central incidents for stress were fear, alienation and anxiety. It was found that action/interactional strategies of stress-coping behavior were related to social support and mobility disorders. Action/interactional strategies to stress-coping in elderly people were dependent on medical treatment, mind control, participation of social activity, and renunciation of offensive behavior. Stress-coping in elderly people resulted in stability or instability in body and mind. Conclusion: It is suggested that the results of this study may contribute to the development stress-coping strategies for elderly people. There is need to develop social support systems and a positive environment to avoid negative coping strategies.

Depression, Self-efficacy and Coping in Patients with Cancer (암환자의 우울, 자기효능 및 대처간의 상관관계)

  • The relationships among self efficacy, depression and coping with cancer were examined in 194 outpatients who had received a diagnosis of cancer. The sample for this descriptive correlational study consisted of people who were at least 19 years old and had been treated for cancer at 6 hospital in Seoul. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. The results of this study are as follows: 1. People who attributed cancer to heredity/family showed the highest mean score of self efficacy. People who attributed cancer to smoking showed the highest mean score of depression. and coping. 2. There were significant differences between causal attribution and depression and between causal attribution and coping. 3. There was a negative correlation between self-efficacy and depression(r=-.301, p= .000), whereas there was a positive correlation between self-efficacy and coping (r=.195, 0=.006). Finally, it is evident that identifying clear perceived causes, self-efficacy, depression and coping in patients with cancer continues to challenge researchers. Based upon this study, it is recommended that future research have a longitudinal design that allows for the identification of changes in perception, emotion and coping and, possibly, different relationships over time.

A Study of The Treatment Related-Stressors and Stress Coping Methods of Hemodialysis Noncompliant (혈액투석 치료 불이행 환자의 스트레스와 대처유형에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: Purpose of the this study is to define the hemodialysis treatment-related stressors and stress coping methods in hemodialysis noncompliant patients. Method: Hemodialysis treatment-related stressors scale and stress coping style scale were used with 178 patients that received continuous hemodialysis treatment, met the noncompliance criteria. Collected data were analyzed by using the SPSS 12.0 program. Result: In hemodialysis noncompliant patients, Psychosocial stress were higher than physical stress, 'aesthetic thinking' was the most used. As recognition of health status was lower, hemodialysis treatment-related stressors were higher. In terms of causative disease, 'hypertension' pt used more 'problem-focus coping' and 'social support pursuit' than the other groups. As subjective recognition level of health status was higher, 'problem-focus coping' and 'social support pursuit' were more used. It was showed positive correlation between psychosocial stressors and 'aesthetic thinking'. Conclusion: Hemodialysis noncompliant patients had high psychosocial stress, accordingly, used 'aesthetic coping'. It means that they has negative coping to disease and hemodialysis treatment. Therefore, Nurses need to manage psychosocial aspects, which influence on noncompliant behaviors.

Relationships between Stress, Ways of Coping and Burnout of Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients (암환자를 돌보는 가족원의 스트레스, 대처방식과 소진의 관계)

  • Purpose: The study was to examine the relationships between stress, ways of coping and burnout among family caregivers of cancer patients. Methods: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 207 family caregivers of cancer patients at one university hospital and one general hospital in Busan, Korea. The instruments included a Stress Scale, a Ways of Coping Scale and a Burnout Scale. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients with the SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Results: Stress was found to have significant relationships with age, relation to the patient, education, monthly income, degree of care-giving, financial burden and activities of daily living of patient. In active coping, there were significant differences according to education and religion. Passive coping was significantly related to gender. In burnout, there were significant differences according to age, relation to the patient, education, occupational status, monthly income, degree of care-giving, financial burden and activities of daily living of patient. Stress and burnout showed a positive correlation, while there was a negative correlation between burnout and active coping. Conclusion: These results suggest that promoting active coping would better support family caregivers of cancer patients in managing burnout effectively.

Protective Factors of School-Aged Children's Adjustment to Parental Divorce from Low Income Families (저소득층 이혼 가족 아동의 적응에 있어 보호요인 탐색 : 아동의 대처 전략, 부모 양육 유형, 부모의 스트레스, 사회적 지지)

  • This study explored adjustment of school-aged children from low-income divorced families. Specifically, protective factors for children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were investigated with children's coping strategies, perceived social support, parents' childrearing style, and parental stress. Subjects of this study were 126 children of 4 to 6 grade and their custodial parents(38 fathers, 88 mothers) from divorced families. Children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were not different neither by children's sex nor custodial parent's sex. When children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, and when parents experienced less childrearing stress, children perceived themselves to be more competent. Similarly, when children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, received more social support, they perceived themselves to be more adequate. Children whose parents had high levels of childrearing stress showed more internalized and externalized behavior problems. Furthermore, children who perceived less supports from peers showed more behavior problems.

Correlation of Uncertainty, Coping, and Health-Promoting Behavior in Patients with Gastric Cancer following Gastrectomy (위절제술을 받은 위암환자의 불확실성, 대처, 건강증진행위 간의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the correlation of uncertainty, coping and health-promoting behavior in patients with gastric cancer who have undergone a gastrectomy. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used and the participants were 120 gastric cancer patients from one general hospital. The structured questionnaire included Mishle's Uncertainty in Illness Scale, the Korean Cancer Coping Questionnaire, and the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: There were significant negative correlations between uncertainty and intrapersonal coping (r=-.657, p<.001); between uncertainty and interpersonal coping (r=-.223, p=.014); and between uncertainty and health promoting behavior (r=-.594, p<.001). There were significant positive correlations between intrapersonal coping and health promoting behavior (r=.790, p<.001); and between interpersonal coping and health promoting behavior (r=.502, p<.001). Uncertainty, intrapersonal coping, and interpersonal coping explained 49% of health promoting behavior (F=21.312, p<.001). The factors that influenced health promoting behavior were intrapersonal coping (${\beta}=.582$, p<.001), and interpersonal coping (${\beta}=.246$, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that intrapersonal coping and interpersonal coping were significant variables for health promoting behavior in patients with gastric cancer who had undergone a gastrectomy in the past six months.

A Study of Coping Behavior Types of Private Education Expenditure (사교육비 부담의 대처행동 유형에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the types of coping behaviors of the burden of private education expenditure and to identify the characteristics of the households representing certain coping behaviors. For empirical analysis, the data of the study were collected from 868 housewives living in Seoul and Sungnam. The statistical methods adopted for data analysis are frequency, percentage, mean, Factor analysis, Cluster analysis and Logit analysis. In this study, it is assumed that the coping behaviors are classified by three factors - financial management, negative, positive. The reset of the logit analysis shows that private education expenditure and subjective burden are the most critical variables for classifying the coping behaviors.

Predictors of On-Line Game Addiction of Junior-High School Students (중학생의 온라인게임 중독 위험 예측변인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify variables dichotomizing adolescents into online game addiction-latency group and non-addiction group. Based on ecologic theory, individual system(self-esteem, self-control, depression, stress-coping strategy), family system(parental support), and social system(teachers' support and peer-group support) were suggest for variables affecting online game addiction of adolescents. 612 adolescents were tested for game addiction, self-esteem, self-control, depression, stress-coping strategy, and social supports from parents, teachers, and peer group. Independent t-tests showed between-group differences in self-esteem, self-control, depression, aggressive, and negative-avoiding stress-coping strategies, parental support, and peer-group support. Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that aggressive stress-coping strategy of social system and peer-group support of social system had significant influences on the division of the groups.
