  • Four out of 15 dogs were successfully induced diabetes mellitus with intravenous iqiection of 30 mg of streptozotgin and 50 mg of alloxan monohydrate per kilogram body weight and maintained more than 9 weeks without iqiection of insulin or oral hypoglycemic sgent Histopathologicallyi these four dogs have typical diabetic lesions such as degeneration and vacuolation of pancreatic islet cells, and fatty change of liver at necropsy in the end of study. Serum glucose level increased dramatically at 24 hours post-injection but serum fructosamine level increased gradually and reached plateau at 31-41 days post-injection of streptozotocin and alloxan. Serum fructosamine concert%lion correlated very well with serum glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs. Our data suggest that serum fructosamine reflects mean glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs.

  • A 4 year old mixed female dog was presented dyspnea, anorexia and syncope. In blood smear test, a lot of heartworm larvae were observed. In thoracic radiography, "reverse D" shape was observed. So, this case was considered with heartworm disease. In echocardiography, marked left heart hypertrophy was presented. In M-mode view, aortic valvular stenosis was found. After mongrel dog died, aortic valvular stenosis was reconfirmed in necropsy. After all, the dog died of pulmonary edema because of aortic valvular stenosis caused left heart failure.t failure.

  • An 11-year-old female toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) kept in outdoor exhibit was presented with sudden onset of anorexia and hypodynamia. After routine physical examination, the patient was treated. However, the bird died that evening. Necropsy revealed moderate swelling of the liver with yellowish discoloration. Based on the gross pathology as well as histologic evidence of iron pigments accumulation throughout the hepatocytes, hepatic hemochromatosis was diagnosed.

  • A case of renal candidiasis is reported in a 4-year-old male Masked Palm civet (Paguma larvata). On necropsy, the kidneys were bilaterally swollen, pale and had numerous 1 to 3 mm diameter white foci throughout the parenchyma on cut section. The urinary bladder was filled with opaque and milky exudate. Histologically, severe infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages and necrosis were noted in the interstitial areas of both cortex and medulla and in the lumens of renal tubules and collecting duct often resulting in cystic dilation of the tubules. • A case of mammary gland adenocarcinoma is reported in a 22-year-old female Mandril (Mandrillus sphinix). The veterinarian noted a fast growing mass, which was inflammed and perforated, involving both mammary gland during the last 4 months. Supplement antibiotic and chemotherpay were unsucessful and the monkey was found dead. On necropsy, both right and left mannary gland were replaced by firm, tan, perforating neoplastic mass. • Two dead and two terminally sick badgers with signs of lacrimation and nasal discharge were submitted to the Pathology Division of the National Veterinary Research Institute for necropsy. The major gross findings included chronic dermatitis and pneumonia. histologically intracytoplasmic and intranuclear acidophilic inclusion bodies consistent with Canine Distemper (CD) virus particles in lung kidney urinary bladder skin foot pad stomach and small intestine. Additionally there were diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia hyperkeratosis of foot pads and focal non-suppurative encephalitis. Canine distemper infection in these badgers was further confirmed by immuofluorescent technique which demonstrated CD virus-specific antigens in lung and kidney sections.

  • A rat (Rottus norvegicus) infected with C. hepatica was trapped incidentally. At necropsy, grossly yellowish-white nodules were scattered on the liver surface. Microscopically, granulomatous and fibrotic nodules containing eggs and/or adult worms of C. hepatica were detected in the liver. Septal fibrosis forming pseudolobules was observed as a diffuse change throughout the liver. In double staining with immunostaining of -SMA and toluidine blue, myofibroblasts and mast cells were generally observed within the fibrous septa with mast cells being along the myofibroblasts. In this case, we hypothesized that myofibroblast and mast cell might playa role in septal fibrosis of rat liver induced by C. hepatica infection.

  • A patient (Painter+Viszula mixed breed, 4 months old, male), with chief historic sign of acute vomiting, hemorrhagic diarrhea, anorexia and dyspnea during 4 days was admitted ta College of Veterinary Medicine, Kyungpook National University. Necropsy findings were revealed ulcer and hemorrhage contained hemorrhagic diarrhea in gastrointestinal tract, severe emphysema and hemorrhage in the lung and kidney and cardiac hypertropy. Histopathological changes showed emphysema, hyperemia and hemorrhage in the lung, severe hyperemia, hemorrhage, hepatic vacuolation and cellular necrosis in the liver, hyperemia, hemorrhage, necrosis of tubular epithelium in the kidney, hemorrhage in cardiac muscle and hyperemia, necrosis and sloughing of epithelium in the intestine. In this case, we diagnosed as a paraquat poisoning.

  • A 13-years and 8-months old Jindo dog showed vomiting and pale red vulvular discharge. At necropsy, the uterus was swollen and endometrium was diffusely thickened by numerous protruding cysts which measured approximately from 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter. On sectioning the cysts exuded pale red watery fluid. histologically the endometrium was thickened and characterized by mild to moderate edema congestion and hemorrhagic foci. The cystic endometrial glands were lined by a single layer of flattened cuboidal or vacuolated columnar epithelium. Occasional dilated glands had traversed through the submucosa into the myometrial region. Afew mixed inflammatory cells infiltrated in the lamina propria. Bacteriologically Escherichia coli was isolated from the uterine contents. Gross and microscopic finding were consistent with cystic endometrial hyperplasia.

  • The cases of feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV) infection were diagnosed in three imported cats. All cats died within one week after mild emaciation, depression and anorexia. One cat showed yellowish watery diarrhea. At necropsy, all cats had segmental hemorrhage on the serosa and mucosa of the small intestine. Histopathologically, severe diffuse necro-hemorrhagic enteritis was observed in small intestine especially in jejunum and ileum. The crypts of Lieberkuhn were dilated and contained necrotic epithelia. Severely damaged epithelia of crypts were transformed into bizarre shapes. Multifocal lympholysis and lymphoid depletion were found in Peyer's patches and other lymphoid tissues. Direct fluorescent antibody (FA) test revealed the characteristic FPLV antigen in the cytoplasms of crypt epithelial cells. Based on the clinical signs, characteristic pathologic findings and FA test, these cases were diagnosed as FPLV infection. In our best knowledge, this study is the first case report for FPLV infection in imported cats in Korea.
