  • We present the result of our near infrared J- (${\lambda}=1.25{\mu}m$), H- (${\lambda}=1.63{\mu}m$), and $K_s$-band (${\lambda}=2.14{\mu}m$) imaging of ultraluminous ($L_{IR}$ > $10^{12}L_{\odot}$) and luminous ($L_{IR}=10^{11-12}L_{\odot}$) infrared galaxies (ULIRGs and LIRGs), to investigate their relationship through properties of their host galaxies. We find that (1) for single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs, their spheroidal host galaxies have similar properties, but ULIRGs display a substantially higher level of nuclear activity than LIRGs, suggesting that their infrared luminosity difference comes primarily from the different level of current nuclear activity. We infer that LIRGs and ULIRGs have similar progenitor galaxies, follow similar evolutionary processes, and may evolve into optically-selected QSOs. (2) Largely-separated multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have significantly brighter host galaxies than single-nucleus ULIRGs and LIRGs in $K_s$-band, indicating that multiple-nuclei ULIRGs have a bias towards mergers of intrinsically large progenitor galaxies, in order to produce high infrared luminosity ($L_{IR}$ > $10^{12}L_{\odot}$) even at the early merging stage. (3) We derive dust extinction of host galaxies of ULIRGs and LIRGs to be $A_V$ ~ 14 mag in the optical or equivalently $A_K$ ~ 0.8 mag in the near-infrared $K_s$-band, based on the comparison of host galaxy's luminosities in the J-, H-, and $K_s$-bands.

  • In this report, we calculated the angular dependence of exchange bias ($H_{ex}$) by using single domain model in exchange coupled ferromagnetic (F)/antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, which results with AF thickness ($t_{AF}$) were used for the analysis of measured ones in NiFe/MnIr bilayers. Angular dependence of $H_{ex}$ calculated at $t_{AF}$ > $t_c$ showed typical unidirectional behaviors, however, calculated one at $0.5t_c$ < $t_{AF}$ < $t_c$ showed peculiar angular behaviors by fixed AF spins at specified angle near ${\theta}_H=90^{\circ}$. Angular dependence of $H_{ex}$ measured in NiFe/MnIr (20 nm) bilayers showed typical unidirectional behaviors. However, measured one in NiFe/MnIr (4 nm) bilayers showed mixed behaviors including both of unidirectional and peculiar angular behaviors, which was explained by the grain size distribution of polycrystalline MnIr.

  • Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for non-destructive analysis that can be obtained in a wide range of environments. Recently, NIR measurements have been utilized as probe for quantitative analysis in agricultural, industrial, and medical sciences. In addition, it is also possible to make practical application on NIR for molecular structural analysis. In this work, Fourier transform near infrared (FT-NIR) measurements were carried out to utilize extensively in the relative amounts of different secondary structures were employed, such as Iysozyme, concanavalin A, silk fibroin and so on. Several broad NIR bands due to the protein absorption were observed between 4000 and $5000\;^{-1}$. In order to obtain more structural information from these featureless bands, second derivative and Fourier-self-deconvolution procedures were performed. Significant band separation was observed near the feature at $4610\;^{-1}$ ,. Particularly the peak intensity at $4525\;^{-1}$ shows a characteristic change with thermal denaturation of fibroin. The structural information can be also obtained by mid-IR and CD spectral. Correlation of NIR spectra with protein structure is discussed.

  • The thin SiC filament technique has been employed to identify the possibility of measuring flame temperature, and especially unstable near-extinction flame temperature in an oxidizer deficient ambience, by comparing the relative visible (non-IR) luminosities of SiC filaments with thermocouple measured temperature in co-flowing, laminar propane/air diffusion flames. The results show good agreement between the digitized relative visible luminosity profiles of the SiC filaments and temperature profiles measured using a thermocouple at temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$, although, a non-linear calibration is probably required far the whole temperature range. The highest radial peak temperature exists near to the nozzle exit. and the centerline temperatures were virtually unchanged with increasing flame height in an oxidizer deficient near-extinction flame.

  • We present near-infrared light curves of HBC 722 after its the September 2010 outburst. We have been monitoring its near-infrared light curves since November 2010 with Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute Infrared Camera System (KASINICS). HBC 722 exhibits large changes in optical and near-infrared brightness since its outburst. The J, H, and $K_s$ light curves over about 2.5 years show that in all observed bands HBC 722 progressively became fainter until around April 2011, down to J ~10.7, H ~9.9, $K_s$ ~9.3, but it is getting brighter again. Large scatter in the obtained light curve prevents us from finding whether there is any short timescale variation as reported in other optical observations. The near-infrared color of HBC 722 is becoming bluer since its outburst. The pre-outburst Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of HBC 722 is consistent with that of a slightly reddened Class II YSO with the exception of the extraordinary IR-excess in the far-infrared region.

  • Wood-plastic composite (WPC) is a promising and sustainable material, and refers to a combination of wood and plastic along with some binding (adhesive) materials. In comparison to pure wood material, WPCs are in general have advantages of being cost effective, high durability, moisture resistance, and microbial resistance. The properties of WPCs come directly from the concentration of different components in composite; such as wood flour concentration directly affect mechanical and physical properties of WPCs. In this study, wood powder concentration in WPC was determined by Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The reflectance spectra from WPC in both powdered and tableted form with five different concentrations of wood powder were collected and preprocessed to remove noise caused by several factors. To correlate the collected spectra with wood powder concentration, multivariate calibration method of partial least squares (PLS) was applied. During validation with an independent set of samples, good correlations with reference values were demonstrated for both FT-NIR and FT-IR data sets. In addition, high coefficient of determination (${R^2}_p$) and lower standard error of prediction (SEP) was yielded for tableted WPC than powdered WPC. The combination of FT-NIR and FT-IR spectral region was also studied. The results presented here showed that the use of both zones improved the determination accuracy for powdered WPC; however, no improvement in prediction result was achieved for tableted WPCs. The results obtained suggest that these spectroscopic techniques are a useful tool for fast and nondestructive determination of wood concentration in WPCs and have potential to replace conventional methods.

  • According to a study on improving ship survivability, an IR signature represents the contrast radiance intensity between the radiation signature from a ship and the background signature. It was found from applying stealth techniques to the process of ship development that the IR signature is remarkably sensitive and dependent on the environment. In this study, marine climate data for the sea near the Korean Peninsula were collected, and the marine meteorological environment in Korean waters was defined. Based on this data, a study on the sensitivity of the IR signature of target objects was performed using analytical methods. The results of the research indicated that clouds have important effects on the infrared signature, but the velocity of the wind and the humidity have only slight effects on the IR signature. In addition, the air and seawater temperatures had hardly any effect on the IR signature, but it is judged that additional study is needed.

  • It is essential to understand the infrared signature of a naval ship to survive against various missile attacks under variable environmental conditions. As guided missiles are developing to equip more accurate IR seekers, research works for countermeasure and IR stealth technology are strongly required. But challenging works are continuously suggested for predicting and analyzing IR signal status of naval ships to achieve low observable performance under various weather conditions, variable missions and developing threats. In this study, overall guidelines of setting design criteria for low observable ships are proposed by considering varying environmental conditions including daily and seasonal variations. Test and evaluation criteria for newly constructed ships for target and background temperature difference is proposed as a design criteria which can be predicted by change of condition and ship's speed. Through the proposed techniques and procedures, it is expected to establish the measurement and evaluation criteria by using temperature, IR Signal differences between the ship and the background.
