Fabrication of Carbon Nanotubes Monolayer Film using Liquid/Liquid Interface

  • We report a fabrication of carbon nanotube (CNT) monolayer thin film using liquid-liquid interface. The multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), which were synthesized by the alumina template method formed a monolayer at the liquid-liquid interface after sonicating the MWCNT water-oil dispersion. Moreover, with the addition of ethanol, the MWCNT monlayer was also formed at the liquid-liquid interface. The monolayer is transferable onto solid substrates and the transferred film was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM)

Fabrication of epitaxial ZnO layers on MOCVD-ZnO/(01-12) sapphire by chemical vapor transport

  • We present the epitaxial growth of high-quality ZnO layers by chemical vapor transport (CVT) technique on (01-12) sapphire with a ZnO buffer layer growth by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The surface of the grown ZnO epitaxial layers has atomically flats and the RMS is 0.11 nm. PL spectrum of as-grown samples exhibits two emissions originated by interactions between photon and free excitons.

VSV-G Viral Envelope Glycoprotein Prepared from Pichia pastoris Enhances Transfection of DNA into Animal Cells

  • Vesicular stomatitis virus G glycoprotein (VSV-G) has been widely used for pseudotyping retroviral, lentiviral, and artificial viral vectors. The objective of this study was to establish a potential approach for large-scale production of VSV-G. To this end, VSV-G was cloned with an N-terminal His-tag into Pichia pastoris expression vector pPIC3.5K. Three clones ($Mut^s$) containing the VSV-G expression cassette were identified by PCR. All clones proliferated normally in expansion medium, whereas the proliferation was reduced significantly under induction conditions. VSV-G protein was detected in cell lysates by western blot analysis, and the highest expression level was observed at 96 h post induction. VSV-G could also be obtained from the condition medium of yeast protoplasts. Furthermore, VSV-G could be incorporated into Ad293 cells and was able to induce cell fusion, leading to the transfer of cytoplasmic protein. Finally, VSV-G-mediated DNA transfection was assayed by flow cytometry and luciferase measurement. Incubation of VSV-G lysate with the pGL3-control DNA complex increased the luciferase activity in Ad293 and HeLa cells by about 3-fold. Likewise, incubation of VSV-G lysate with the pCMV-DsRed DNA complex improved the transfection efficiency into Ad293 by 10% and into HeLa cells by about 1-fold. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that VSV-G could be produced from P. pastoris with biofunctionalities, demonstrating that large-scale production of the viral glycoprotein is feasible.

A New Decomposition Method for Parallel Processing Multi-Level Optimization

  • In practical designs, most of the multidisciplinary problems have a large-size and complicate design system. Since multidisciplinary problems have hundreds of analyses and thousands of variables, the grouping of analyses and the order of the analyses in the group affect the speed of the total design cycle. Therefore, it is very important to reorder and regroup the original design processes in order to minimize the total computational cost by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and by processing them in parallel. In this study, a new decomposition method is proposed for parallel processing of multidisciplinary design optimization, such as collaborative optimization (CO) and individual discipline feasible (IDF) method. Numerical results for two example problems are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

Synthesis and Luminescence Properties of a Cyan-blue Thiosilicate-based Phosphor $SrSi_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$

  • A series of Sr-Si-S compounds was synthesized using an advanced chemical method in which the use of one solution-based process uniformly dispersed the $Eu^{2+}$ activators in the host crystals, to find new compositions that would suit phosphor applications. Particular focus was given to the Si-rich region. This led to the synthesis of a single-phase compound that showed an unknown X-ray diffraction pattern. This compound had a composition close to that of $SrSi_2S_5$. When this compound is activated with $Eu^{2+}$ ($SrSi_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$), it shows a cyan-blue emission with a main luminescence peak at 495 nm. This emission is excited by wavelengths of 250-440 nm and has a maximum excitation at 350 nm.

  • Background: Intersectoral and multidisciplinary collaboration is becoming more prominent in all facets of government, health, social services, and scientific endeavors. An interplay of a multitude of driving forces moves multiple disciplines forward to achieve quality outcomes in health and social sciences services and research. Aim: This paper aims at discussing the prospects for future multidisciplinary collaboration. If inter organizational integration and multidisciplinary collaboration are the ways of the future in academia and the scientific world, it then becomes crucial to examine what lies ahead for the nursing profession, Discussion: This paper argues that in order for multidisciplinary endeavors to succeed, the leaders in multidisciplinary teams shoulder the largest share of the responsibilities involved. In developing a lasting team constituting professionals from different disciplines, the leader needs to include the right individuals in the team, identify a common goal, build trusting relationships through open communication and interprofessional education, and empower members through creating room for autonomy and at the same time allowing space for personal development. The leader will need to utilize information technologies to manage communication issues in a large multi-site multidisciplinary project. Lastly, he or she must be able to demonstrate team productivity through process and outcome evaluation. It needs to be emphasized that it falls to each individual nurse to speak up and act upon what nursing believes and represents in our quest for success in multidisciplinary endeavors. Conclusion: The significance of the role of the leader is paramount for a team to succeed. Yet there is no prospect if only a handful of exceptional nurse leaders are moving ahead in multidisciplinary endeavors. Without the actualization of professional roles by each individual nurse, the profession will have no prospect in collaborations across disciplines.

Luminescence Properties of Anthracene Chromophores in Cyclosiloxane-Based Hybrid Polymer Films

  • Luminescence properties of anthracene chromophores were investigated. Anthracene chromophores were incorporated in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymers through one-pot hydrosilylation reaction. Using four-armed cyclosiloxanes, divinylterminated siloxane monomers, and 9-vinylanthracenes, anthracene-labeled hybrid polymers were prepared. Free-standing hybrid polymer films were prepared successfully by doctor-blade method and thermal treatment. The polymer films exhibit strong blue fluorescence from anthracene and its fluorescence lifetime was not influenced by the temperature, indicating that the movement of anthracene chromophores was restrained in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymer films.

Luminescent properties of a new yellow phosphor $CaBaSiS_4:Eu^{2+}$ synthesized by an advanced chemical solution method

  • We report on preparation of $CaBaSiS_4:Eu^{2+}$ material by an advanced chemical solution method and fluorescent properties of the new material. The emission spectrum of $CaBaSiS_4:Eu^{2+}$ has the main peak centered at 598 nm, with the corresponding excitation maximum at around 420 nm. The strongest emission intensity of this material approached 96% compared to one of the best commercially available YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphor.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Breast Cancer Care

  • Aim: The purpose of this paper is to present the importance of multidisciplinary strategies in cancer prevention and control, especially comprehensive breast cancer care. Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Although the incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries is still lower than in Western countries, the rate of increase for the last two decades is striking. Methods: Data on cancer mortality, incidence, and risk factors were summarized by using the most recent data available from population-based cancer registries affiliated with the International Union Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). Results: Global differences in breast cancer incidence and fluctuations in rates within a country still exist. The incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries was lower than in Western countries. Breast cancer incidence in the United States decreased each year during 1999-2003. On the other hand, morbidity and mortality related to breast cancer in Asia has increased significantly. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary strategies to reduce breast cancer mortality and promote breast cancer awareness are addressed. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary approaches to cancer treatment and control will be valuable in implementing future breast cancer research in the fields of basic, clinical, and population research in Asia.
