  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the mother's educational aspirations and household's characteristics have an effect on the likelihood of private educational expenditures and the amount of private educational expenditures. Factor analysis, probit and tobit analyses were used. The main findings can be summarized as the following: The mother's educational aspirations for intrinsic values is higher than for extrinsic values. The mother's educational aspirations for extrinsic values, household's assets, and residing in Seoul rather than residing in Incheon had significant positive effects on the likelihood of private educational expenditures. However, the child's birth order had a significant negative effect on the likelihood of private educational expenditures. The mother's educational aspirations for extrinsic values, the mother's education level, household's income, household's assets, and residing in Seoul rather than residing in Incheon had significant positive effects on the amount of private educational expenditures. However, the child's birth order had a significant negative effect on the amount of private educational expenditures. Findings from this study offer several implications. First, the mother's educational aspirations for extrinsic values rather than for intrinsic values has an effect on private educational expenditures. Unless the mother's educational aspirations have been changed to pursuing intrinsic values, the private educational expenditures cannot be reduced. Second, the polarization of the household's income and assets could bring about the polarization of private educational expenditures, which can lead to the intergenerational income polarization.

The objects of this study are 141 preschool children under 5 years old, 141 parents and 42 class teachers. Test for School Readiness, Measure of Mother's Educational Participation, Measure of Teacher's Teaching Method, and Measures of Literacy Condition of Home and Class are used as a studying tool. Collected materials were analyzed by Three-way ANOVA, Correlation analysis of Spearman, product-moment correlation analysis of Pearson, and phased regression analysis. The results are as follows: First, there are meaningful differences between the gender of children and mother's educational level for the school readiness. Second, except for the home's literacy condition, children's gender, educational level of parents, educational participation of mother, teaching method of teacher and literacy conditions of class show the meaningful positive correlation with the children's school readiness. Third, the adaptive zone, which is the subordinated zone, is affected by the gender of children, and the knowledge zone is influenced by the mother's educational level most. These results will be useful for the basic data that can help to promote school readiness for children's parents and teachers.

  • The weaning practice of infants from 5 to 12 months of age in the area of Chunchon, Kangwon-do was studied. Subjects were divided into 2 groups depending on residential area, monthly family income and mother's educational level. Parents of group 1 (n=90) received higher education and more monthly family income than those of group 2(n=32). The family income was significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2. Mother's educational level has been markedly improved over 10 years, which affected the feeding methods before weaning in both groups(P<0.05). Group 1 appeared to be bottle-fed. Bottle-and mixed-feeding were mainly due to lack of breast milk. 95.6% of group 1 and 71.9% of group 2 started weaning before the age of 6 months and only 16.4% were completely finished regardless of the groups. Commercially prepared foods were used more than home-made for first given-supplementary food. 82.2% of group 1 received fruits and 84.4% of group 2 cookies/crackers as their main supplementary foods. As the motivation of onset of weaning, 'for baby's health and nutritional status' was the most common. These results demonstrate that there are distinct differences between these 2 groups in 1) the feeding methods prior to weaning, 2) time of onset of weaning, and 3) main supplementary foods, influenced by mother's educational level, economic purchasing power, or subjects birth order.

  • This study investigated the effects of child, mother, and family characteristics on parenting self-efficacy of 416 Korean mothers living in Seoul Korea. The results showed that mother's parenting self-efficacy was positively related to mother's perceived social support, child's temperament, and family income, but negatively related to mother' stress. Mother's educational parenting self-efficacy among parenting self-efficacy was positively related to mother's perceived social support, child's temperament, and mother's educational level, but negatively related to mother' stress and family income. Multiple regression indicated that mother characteristics were a strong predicator of mother's parenting self-efficacy. Especially, husband's support among mother characteristics was the strongest predicator of mother's parenting self-efficacy.
