  • Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have been investigated for their potential utility as large energy storage systems due to their advantageous performances in terms of long cycle life, high energy efficiency, low cost, and flexible design. Carbon materials are typically used as electrodes in redox reactions and as a liquid electrolyte support. The activities, surface areas, and surface morphologies of porous carbon materials must be optimized to increase the redox flow battery performance. Here, to reduce the resistance in VRFBs, surface-modified carbon felt electrodes were fabricated, and their structural, morphological, and chemical properties were characterized. The surface-modified carbon felt electrode improved the cycling energy efficiencies in the VRFBs, from 65% to 73%, due to the improved wettability with electrolyte. From the results of impedances analysis with proposed fitting model, the electrolyte-coupled polarization in VRFB dramatically decreased upon modification of carbon felt electrode surface. It is also demonstrated that the compressibility of carbon felt electrodes was important to the VRFB polarization, which are concerned with mass transfer polarization. The impedance analysis will be helpful for obtaining better and longer-lived VRFB performances.

  • Among many kinds of bioaffinity sensors, the avidin-biotin system has been widely used in a variety of biological applications due to the specific and high affinity interaction of the system. In this work, gold nanorods with high surface area were explored as electrodes in order to amplify the signal response from the avidin-biotin interaction which can be further utilized for avidin-biotin biosensors. Electrochemical performance of electrodes modified with nanorods and functionalized with avidin in response to interactions with biotin at various concentrations using $[Fe(CN)_6]^{3-/4-}$ couple as the redox probe were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A very low biotin concentration of less than 1 ng/mL could be detected using the electrodes modified with nanorods.

  • Nickel is a good electrocatalytic metal and nickel electrodes find many applications in different electrochemical fields. The nickel plated electrodes were prepared by electro-deposition technique on mild steel surface modified with in-situ deposition of nickel titanate. The SEM images shows that the nickel plating on nickel titanate modified mild steel shows better adherence than the nickel plating on bare mild steel surfaces. The extent of polarization of the nickel plating on mild steel with nickel titanate was lower than that of nickel plating on mild steel. The incorporation of nickel titanate on mild steel surface before nickel plating enhances physical, chemical and electrochemical properties of the plating film.

  • In general, the background light that is produced during the reset period deteriorates the dark room contrast ratio in AC PDP. In this paper, we propose a modified ramp reset pulse that can reduce the background light to an imperceptible level. In the new reset waveform, the discharges between the scan and sustain electrodes are minimized by applying a positive bias voltage to the sustain electrode and only the weak discharges between the scan and address electrodes are found to occur during the reset period. We also adopted the MgO coated phosphor layer to improve the address voltage margin that was reduced when the bias voltage in the modified ramp reset waveform was applied. As a result, the address voltage margin of 45 V which is the same level of the conventional method was ortained and the dark room contrast ratio was improved up to 7500 : 1.

  • Determination of Lead(II) using nafion-DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid)-glycerol-modified glassy carbon electrodes is described. Lead(II) is accumulated at the electrode by complexing with the DTPA, reduced, and detected by differential pulse voltammetry. In this study, we demonstrate that at a preconcentration time of 5min the nafion-DTPA-glycerol-modified glassy carbon electrode has a linear calibration curve at range 1.0${\times}$10$\^$-9/M∼1.0${\times}$10$\^$-7/M in pH 4.0 buffer solution. The detection limit(3$\sigma$) is as low as 5.0${\times}$10$\^$-6/M. This method is applied to the determination of lead(II) in certified reference material and the result agrees satisfactorily with the certified value.

  • Mercaptopropionic acid(mpa) has been used to make self-assembled monolayer(SAMs) on the surface of graphite electrode incorporating gold nano particles, which are subsequently modified with dopamine(dopa). Such modified electrodes haying types of Gr(Au)/mpa-dopa were employed in the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH. The responses of such modified electrodes were studied in terms of electron transfer kinetics and reaction procedure in the reaction. The reaction of the surface immobilized dopa with NADH was studied using the rotating disk electrode technique and a value of $5.06{\times}10^5M^{-1}s^{-1}$ was obtained for the second-order rate constant in 0.1 M phosphate buffer(pH=7.0), which was a $EC_{cat}$ and kinetic controlled procedure. But, the modified electrodes were diffusion controlled reaction having $4.64{\times}10^{-4}cm^2s^{-1}$ of the coefficient within $10^{-3}s$ after starting the reaction.

  • This work presents a correlation between the behavior of formic acid oxidation (FAO) on various Bi-modified Pt(poly) disk electrodes and their morphologies observed on Bi-modified Pt(111) disk electrodes using electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) to understand the effects of Bi on Pt. To distinguish the FAO activities of Bi on Pt and plain Pt around Bi, additional Pt was intentionally deposited using two different routes: direct route and iodine route. In direct route, Pt was directly deposited on Bi islands and plain Pt sites around Bi islands, while in iodine route, Pt was exclusively deposited on Bi islands by protecting plain Pt sites with adsorbed iodine. Thus, a comparison of FAO performances on the two Bi-modified Pt electrodes with additional Pt (deposited in the different ways) disclosed a difference in FAO performances on plain Pt sites and Bi islands. When Bi coverage was ~0.04, the Bi deposits were scattered Bi islands enhancing FAO on Pt(poly). The additional Pt deposits using direct route increased FAO efficiency, while the ones using iodine route slightly decreased FAO current. The EC-STM observations indicated that Pt deposits around Bi islands, not on Bi islands, were responsible for the FAO current increase on Bi-modified Pt(poly). The FAO efficiency on Bi-modified Pt(poly) with a Bi coverage of ~0.25 increased by a factor of 2. However, the additional Pt deposits using the two Pt deposition routes notably decreased the FAO current. The dependency of FAO on Bi coverage was discussed in terms of electronic effect and ensemble effect.

  • Chemically-modified electrodes were fabricated and their electrocatalytic behaviors have been investigated. As a modifying layer, poly-[1-methyl-3-(pyrrol-1-ylmethyl) pyridinium] was electropolymerized onto Pt electrodes under constant current. The thickness of the polymer film was controlled by means of total charge consumed during the electropolymerization. SEM was used to measure the thickness. There was a linear relationship between the passed charge and the film thickness. Ferro/ferricyanide, used as an electron mediator in this study, was rapidly ion-exchanged into the polymer layer with its concentration of 1.2~1.3M. It was found that electrooxidation of ascorbic acid is catalyzed by incorporated ferri/ferrocyanide couple. Kinetic parameters for electrooxidation were determined by RDE experiments. The results indicate that the present system corresponds to ER+S case based on the Saveant theory. Improving methods have been proposed to be R+S case which is ideal for electrocatalysis.
