The determination of a regression model is important in using statistical designs of experiments. Generally, the exact regression model is not known, and experimenters suppose that a certain model form will be fit. Then an experimental design suitable for that predetermined model form is selected and the experiment is conducted. However, the initially chosen regression model may not be correct, and this can result in undesirable statistical properties. We develop model-robust experimental designs that have stable prediction variance for a family of candidate regression models over a cuboidal region by using genetic algorithms and the desirability function method. We then compare the stability of prediction variance of model-robust experimental designs with those of the 3-level face centered cube. These model-robust experimental designs have moderately high G-efficiencies for all candidate models that the experimenter may potentially wish to fit, and outperform the cuboidal design for the second-order model. The G-efficiencies are provided for the model-robust experimental designs and the face centered cube.
The reliability of the product can be improved by making the product less sensitive to noises. Especially, it Is important to make products robust against various noise factors encountered in production and field environments. In this paper, the phenomenon of degradation assumes a simple random coefficient degradation model to present analysis procedures of degradation data for robust experimental design. To alleviate weak points of previous studies, such as Taguchi's, Wasserman's, and pseudo failure time methods, novel techniques for analysis of degradation data using the cross array that regards amount of degradation as a dynamic characteristic for time are proposed. Analysis approach for degradation data using robust experimental design are classified by assumptions on parametric or nonparametric degradation rate(or slope). Also, a simulation study demonstrates the superiority of proposed methods over some previous works.
In this study a method for a robust design of mechanisms is proposed. The method used in the experimental anlysis and quqlity engineering is applied for mechanisms design. A mathematical model for a mechanism is estimated by the responese surface analysis and the robust design can be carried out. The method can be applied for mechanisms generally. Furthermore because the method can be used in the design stage using the computer model, improved quality and lower cost of the product is achieved even in the design stage.

It is demanded to find the dynamic model of a real structure to design a controller. However, as the structure has inherently infinite number of degree-of-freedom, it is impossible to obtain an exact dynamic model of the structure. Instead a reduction model with finite degree-of-freedom is used for the design of a controller. So there exists uncertainty between a real model and a reduction model which causes poor performance of control. All these uncertainties can degrade the control performance and even cause the control instability. Thus, robust control strategy considering the above uncertainties can be an alternative one to guarantee the performance and stability of the control. This study deals with the experimental verification of robust controller design for the active mass driver. $\mu$-synthesis technique is employed as a robust control strategy. Some weights are chosen based on the difference between the initial plant with which the controller is designed and the perturbed plant to be controlled having the actuator uncertainty. The robustness of $\mu$-synthesis technique is compared with the result of LQG strategy, which does not consider the uncertainty.
A robust control design procedure for a nuclear reactor has been developed and experimentally validated on the Penn State TRIGA research reactor. The utilization of the robust controller as a component of an autonomous control system is also demonstrated. Two methods of specifying a low order (fourth-order) nominal-plant model for a robust control design were evaluated: 1) by approximation based on the 'physics' of the process and 2) by an optimal Hankel approximation of a higher order plant model. The uncertainty between the nominal plant models and the higher order plant model is supplied as a specification to the ,u-synthesis robust control design procedure. Two methods of quantifying uncertainty were evaluated: 1) a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty and 2) multiplicative uncertainty alone. The conclusions are that the optimal Hankel approximation and a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty are the best approach to design robust control for this application. The results from nonlinear simulation testing and the physical experiments are consistent and thus help to confirm the correctness of the robust control design procedures and conclusions.
In this study a method for a robust design of mechanisms is proposed. The method used in the experimental analysis and quality engineering is applied for mechanisms design. A mathematical model for a mechanism is estimated by the response surface analysis and the estimated model is used in minimization of the variance. Using this result, robust design can be carried out. The method can be applied for general mechansims. Furthermore because the method can be used in the design stage using the computer model, improved quality and lower cost of the product is achieved even in the design stage.

In case that the perfect model following conditions are not satisfied in the system, a perfect model-following controller is difficult to apply to the system. To deal with this problem, in this paper, a robust imperfect stable model-following controller is designed by combining time delay controller and sliding mode controller based on the concept of two degrees of freedom(2-DOF) controller design method. The experimental dynamic modeling of the commercial overhead crane with capacity of two tons is carried out. To remove the noise of the measuring signals from the swing angle measurement device and estimate the state of the swing angles of the transported object at each time instant, realtime tracker is designed using Kalman filter. The performance of the designed robust controller is tested through the commercial overhead. The experimental results show that the designed controller is robust and applicable to real systems.
Higher efficiency and effectiveness of Research & Development phases can be attained using advanced statistical methodologies. In this work statistical methodologies are combined with a deterministic approach to engineering design. In order to show the potentiality of such integration, a simple but effective example is presented. It concerns the problem of optimising the performances of a paper helicopter. The design of this simple device is not new in quality engineering literature and has been mainly used for educational purposes. Taking full advantage of fundamental engineering knowledge, an aerodynamic model is originally formulated in order to describe the flight of the helicopter. Screening experiments were necessary to get first estimates of model parameters. Subsequently, deterministic evaluations based on this model were necessary to set up further experimental phases needed to search (or a better design. Thanks to this integration of statistical and deterministic phases, a significant performance improvement is obtained. Moreover, the engineering knowledge かms out to be developed since an explanation of the “why” of better performances, although approximate, is achieved. The final design solution is robust in a broader sense, being both validated by experimental evidence and closely examined by engineering knowledge.
In this paper, we presents a robust control system design for compensating hysteresis of a piezoelectric actuator-based actuation unit. First, the dynamics between the input voltage and the output displacement of the actuation unit are unravelled via a non-parametric system identification method. From the dynamic characteristics of those experimental transfer functions, a parametric model is then derived, whose dynamics match those of the non-parametric ones under various conditions on input voltages. A robust controller is constructed on the basis of this parametric model in order not only to effectively compensate the hysteresis of the actuation unit but also to guarantee the robust stability. Extensive experiments show that the proposed robust control system successfully mitigate the effect of the hysteresis and improve the tracking capability of the actuation unit.
The use of the shape memory alloy, Nitinol wire, is investigated as an actuator for enhancing the damping in structural vibration systems. The first-order mathematical model of the Nitinol wire is obtained from the experimental data for an actuator. Finite element method is utilized for the strain gage sensor model, which is installed at the root of cantilever beam. A simple system, cantilever beam, is built as a flexible structural system to implement a control law with the Nitinol wire actuator. The system model including sensor and actuator is derived, which agrees with the experimental results. The actuator dynamics is augmented with the system so as to design PI controller and the one of robust controllers, LQG/LTR controller, and the control laws are implemented experimentally. The experimental study shows the feasibility of utilizing the Nitinol wire as an actuator for the purpose of vibration control.
