  • The paper proposes an efficient buffer management scheme to enhance performance of the disk I/O system. Without any user level information, the proposed scheme automatically detects the block reference patterns of applications by associating block attributes with forward distance of a block. Based on the detected patterns, the scheme applies an appropriate replacement policy to each application. We also present a new block allocation scheme to improve the performance of buffer cache when kernel needs to allocate a cache block due to a cache miss. The allocation scheme analyzes the cache hit ratio of each application based on block reference patterns and allocates a cache block to maximize cache hit ratios of system. These all procedures are performed on-line, as well as automatically at system level. We evaluate the scheme by trace-driven simulation. Experimental results show that our scheme leads to significant improvements in hit ratios of cache blocks compared to the traditional schemes and requires low overhead.

  • The subway passengers are usually alert to the current location of the train in order not to miss the destination or transfer stations. The Global Positioning System (GPS), although expensive, can give an alarm if properly programmed, but cannot receive the satellite signals, underground. Therefore, a novel approach to context-aware location-based subway information system is motivated. The passengers, who are equipped with mobile devices such as laptop, PDA, and mobile phone as clients of the Personal Area Network (PAN), request the Bluetooth connection to the server which is installed in each car of the train. While the sorrel broadcasts the location-based information including the previous station, the current velocity of the train, the distance and time to the next station, the clients provide additional services based on the recognized context of the information, and what the passengers individually want. The services are spontaneous and autonomous rather than passive. The services include not only the information on the nearby stations, exit numbers, connection buses but also the location-based alarms which can be set specific to various personal requests, and sounded by the location of the train rather than time. Whereas the arrival time may not be accurate due to the delays of the train, the location can be accurately traced and broadcast by the server. Also, the clients do not need any expensive systems like GFS. Towards validating the proposed approach, we implemented a Bluetooth PAN including a PC server, two PDA clients and a laptop client. We modeled a train on the Incheon Subway Line #1 and a train on the Seoul-to-Incheon Line on the server, simulated the virtual trains together with the real clients. and verified that all the services were successfully provided.

  • Instantaneous Frequency(IF) of Doppler signals is used to get the information of relative velocity and miss distance between a missile and the corresponding target. Though Short-Time Fourier Transform(STFT) is mainly used to estimate IF, it has many errors in wide band signals where frequency changes sharply. Because it has a fixed window in time and frequency axes. This paper deals with IF estimation of Doppler signal using a Continuous Wavelet Transform(CWT) which has adaptive window in time and frequency axes. The proposed method is able to estimate IF regardless of frequency changes because it has a narrow window in high frequency band and a wide window in low frequency band. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms STFT in estimating IF.

  • This study purposes to explore the narrative of fictional events complicated by a specific narrator, taking notice of his/her role as an internal focalizer as well as an external participant. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson, is focalized and narrated by a townsperson, apparently an individual, but one who always speaks as 'we.' This tale-teller, as a first-hand witness of the events in the story, details the strange circumstances of Emily's life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, the community, and even the horrible secret hidden to the climactic moment at the end. The narrative 'we' has surely watched Emily for many years with a considerable interest but also with a respectful distance. Being left unidentified on purpose, this narrative agent, in spite of his/her vagueness, definitely knows more than others do and acts undoubtedly as a pivotal role in this tale of grotesque love. Seamlessly juxtaposing the present and the past, the collective 'we' suggests an important subject that the distinction between the past and the present is blurred out for Emily, for whom the indiscernibleness of time flow proves to be her hamartia. The focalizer-narrator describes Miss Emily in the same manner as he/she describes the South whose old ways have passed on by time. Like the Old South, Emily is desperately trapped in the past, since she has not been able to adjust to the changes brought on by time. In the end, the tragic story of Emily Grierson which takes place in Jefferson plainly seems to serve as an introduction to mature Faulkner.

  • Rainfall data is necessary component for water resources design and flood warning system. Most analysis are used long-term hourly data of surface synoptic stations from the Meteorological Administration, Ministry of land, Infrastructure and Transport and others. However, It will be used minutely data of more high density automatic weather stations than surface synoptic stations expecting to increase the frequency of heavy precipitation. But minutely data has a problem about quality of rainfall data by auto observation. This study analyzed about quality control method using automatic weather station's minutely rainfall data of meteorological administration. It was performed assessment of the quality control that was classified quality control of miss Data, outlier data and rainfall interpolation. This method will be utilized when hydrological analysis uses minute rainfall data.

  • In contrast with STT missiles, the guidance law design for BTT missiles should be based on 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics, since the pitch and roll channels of BTT missiles are coupled dynamically. More generally than the prior works, the dynamics of pitch and roll channels, as well as 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics are considered in the design of our terminal-phase optimal guidance law for BTT missiles proposed in this paper. Thereby, the proposed optimal guidance law guarantees high capturability with small miss distance without significant performance degradation due to time-lag effect even in case of relatively slow autopilot dynamics. Moreover, the resulting optimal guidance law is expressed explicitly in feedback-form with the coefficients given as the functions of time-to-go. The effectiveness and practicality of our work is demonstrated through various simulation results.

  • Ground-based interceptors(GBI) comprise a major element of the strategic defense against hostile targets like Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles(ICBM) and reentry vehicles(RV) dispersed from them. An optimum design of the subsystems is required to increase the performance and reliability of these GBI. Propulsion subsystem design and optimization is the motivation for this effort. This paper describes an effort in which an entire GBI missile system, including a multi-stage solid rocket booster, is considered simultaneously in a Genetic Algorithm(GA) performance optimization process. Single goal, constrained optimization is performed. For specified payload and miss distance, time of flight, the most important component in the optimization process is the booster, for its takeoff weight, time of flight, or a combination of the two. The GBI is assumed to be a multistage missile that uses target location data provided by two ground based RF radar sensors and two low earth orbit(LEO) IR sensors. 3Dimensional model is developed for a multistage target with a boost phase acceleration profile that depends on total mass, propellant mass and the specific impulse in the gravity field. The monostatic radar cross section (RCS) data of a three stage ICBM is used. For preliminary design, GBI is assumed to have a fixed initial position from the target launch point and zero launch delay. GBI carries the Kill Vehicle(KV) to an optimal position in space to allow it to complete the intercept. The objective is to design and optimize the propulsion system for the GBI that will fulfill mission requirements and objectives. The KV weight and volume requirements are specified in the problem definition before the optimization is computed. We have considered only continuous design variables, while considering discrete variables as input. Though the number of stages should also be one of the design variables, however, in this paper it is fixed as three. The elite solution from GA is passed on to(Sequential Quadratic Programming) SQP as near optimal guess. The SQP then performs local convergence to identify the minimum mass of the GBI. The performance of the three staged GBI is validated using a ballistic missile intercept scenario modeled in Matlab/SIMULINK.

  • Currently, there are a total of 68 emergency rooms based on Seoul, South Korea, and there is a portal site that allows you to inquire the location of the emergency room, but it is difficult to use in an actual emergency situation because it consists of selecting a gu and a self-governing dong. In addition, it may be more efficient to go to the emergency room directly because you may miss the golden time necessary for survival in a situation where you call 119 and wait for the rescue team. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a service that can quickly search the location of the emergency room based on a specific location through various functions supported by MongoDB. After downloading emergency room location data based on Seoul Metropolitan City, storing it in MongoDB, processing the data through various processing techniques, and applying a spatial index, you can query the emergency room based on distance from a specific location in real time.

  • Although LRU is not adequate for database that has non-uniform reference pattern, it has been adopted in most database systems due to the absence of the proper alternative. We analyze database block reference pattern with the realistic database trace. Based on this analysis, we propose a new cache replacement policy. Trace analysis shows that extremely non-popular blocks take up about 70 % of the entire blocks. The influence of recency on blocks' re-reference likelihood is at first strong due to temporal locality, however, it rapidly decreases and eventually becomes negligible as stack distance increases. Based on this observation, RCB(Reference Characteristic Based) cache replacement policy, which we propose in this paper, classifies the entire blocks into four block groups by blocks' recency and re-reference likelihood, and operates different priority evaluation methods for each block group. RCB policy evicts non-popular blocks more quickly than the others and evaluates the priority of the block by frequency that has not been referenced for a long time. In a trace-driven simulation, RCB delivers a better performance than the existing polices(LRU, 2Q, LRU-K, LRFU). Especially compared to LRU. It reduces miss count by 5~l2.7%. Time complexity of RCB is O(1), which is the same with LRU and 2Q and superior to LRU-K(O(log$_2$N)) and LRFU(O(l) ~ O(log$_2$N)).

  • Traffic engineers have developed and implemented various microscopic simulation models to verify the traffic performance and to prevent the expected problems. The existing microscopic simulation models categorize drivers into several types to reflect various drivers' driving patterns but miss the dynamics of drivers' behavior changed based upon the traffic conditions. It was found from the field data collected from two different merging sections on an urban freeway in Seoul, Korea, that the drivers' critical gap distributions are changed based on (1) the traffic density on the adjacent lane to the acceleration lane and (2) the opportunities left to merge in terms of distance to the end of acceleration lane. It was also found from the study that the drivers' critical gap distributions follow the Normal distribution. and its mean and variance change while a vehicle progresses on an acceleration lane. This paper proposes a new gap-acceptance model developed based on a set of drivers' critical gap distributions from each segment on the acceleration lanes. Through the comparison study between the field data and the results from the simulation utilizing the proposed model, it was verified that (1) the distribution of merging points on an acceleration lane to the adjacent main lane at different density levels, (2) the size of the gap accepted for merging and (3) the speed difference between the merging vehicle and the trailing vehicle at the time of merging are statistically identical to the field data at 95% confidence level.
