  • Oxide buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors were fabricated using MOD processing and development of microstructure and texture were investigated. A $CeO_2$ buffer layers were formed on RABiTS tape. Acetate-based precursor solution was employed to synthesize the precursor solution. Subsequently, the precursor solution was stabilized and modified with triethanolamine. $CeO_2$ precursor gel film was coated and annealed in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere at high temperature. An annealed $CeO_2$ film shows mixed orientation with high (001) texturing. It was shown that (111) texture of $CeO_2$ layers were enhanced by multiple coating. This degradation was attributed to development of microcracks in the multiply coated $CeO_2$ films. Also discussed are the synthesis and the characterization of $La_2Zr_2O_7$ (LZO) buffer layers on RABiTS tape. A biaxially textured LZO buffer layer was fabricated with MOD processing method using metal alkoxide based precursor solution. It was shown that the LZO film were epitaxially grown on RABiTS tape and crack-free & uniform surface was obtained after annealing in $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere.

  • Enhancement of wear resistance of components used in fast reactors is necessary for long service life of the components. Plasma nitriding is a promising surface modification technology to impart high hardness and improved wear resistance of various steel components. This study discusses the characterization of chrome nitrided SS316L casing ring used in secondary sodium pump of fast breeder reactor and its stability under long term sodium exposure. Microstructural and hardness analysis showed that stress relieved component could be chrome nitrided successfully to a thickness of about 100 ㎛. Assessment of in-sodium performance of the chrome nitrided casing ring subjected to long term exposure up to 5000h at 550℃, showed retention of chrome nitrided layer with a case depth almost similar to that before sodium exposure. A slight decrease in the hardness was observed due to prolonged high temperature sodium exposure. Tribological studies indicate very low coefficient of friction indicating the retention of good wear resistance of the coating even after long term sodium exposure.

  • Thorium dioxide (ThO2)-silicon carbide (SiC) composite fuel pellets were fabricated via the spark plasma-sintering (SPS) method to investigate the role of the addition of SiC in enhancing the thermal conductivity of ThO2 fuel. SiC particles with an average size of 1㎛ in 10 and 15 vol% were used to manufacture the composite pellets. The changes in the composites' densification, microstructure and thermal conductivity were explored by comparing them with pure ThO2 pellets. The structural and microstructural characterization of the composite pellets has revealed that SPS could manufacture high-quality composite pellets without having any reaction products or intermetallic. The density measurement by the Archimedes principles and the grain size from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis has indicated that the composites have higher densities and smaller grain sizes than the pellets without SiC addition. Finally, thermal conductivity as a function of temperature has revealed that sintered ThO2-SiC composites showed an increase of up to 56% in thermal conductivity compared to pristine ThO2 pellets.

  • U-10wt.%Zr metallic fuel slugs containing rare-earth (RE: a rare-earth alloy comprising 53% Nd, 25% Ce, 16% Pr and 6% La) elements for a sodium-cooled fast reactor were fabricated by modified injection casting as an alternative method. The distribution, size and composition of the RE inclusions in the metallic fuel slugs were investigated according to the content of the RE inclusions. There were no observed casting defects, such as shrunk pipes, micro-shrinkage or hot tears formed during solidification, in the metallic fuel slugs fabricated by modified injection casting. Scanning electron micrographs and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) showed that the Zr and RE inclusions were uniformly distributed in the matrix and the composition of the RE inclusions was similar to that of a charged RE element. The content and the size of the RE inclusions increased slightly according to the charge content of the RE elements. RE inclusions in U-Zr alloys will have a positive effect on fuel performance due to their micro-size and high degree of distribution.

  • This study aimed to examine effects of microstructural changes through quenching and tempering (QT) and quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatments on corrosion behavior of ultra-high-strength alloy steel containing Cr, Mo, Ni, and Cu. Electrochemical methods including polarization and impedance spectroscopy along with microstructural characterization indicated that the conventional partitioning process could lead to formation of retained austenite with larger size in a martensitic matrix, resulting in a higher corrosion rate in saline environments. In contrast, a slightly higher partitioning temperature than marten-site transformation start temperature produced more finely distributed austenite in a bainitic matrix, exhibiting greater long-term corrosion resistance. This improvement was primarily attributed to the uniform distribution of Ni in the microstructure and the formation of Cr-enriched corrosion product with inhibiting properties in advanced stages of corrosion. These findings provide significant insights into alloying strategies to ensure superior long-term corrosion resistance of ultra-high-strength alloy steel in neutral aqueous environments.

  • Ni-YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) composite powders were fabricated by glycine nitrate process. The prepared powders were sintered at $1300{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h in air and reduced at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a nitrogen and hydrogen atmosphere. The microstructure, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion and mechanical properties of the Ni-YSZ cermets have been investigated with respect to the volume contents of Ni. A porous microstructure consisting of homogeneously distributed Ni and YSZ phases together with well-connected grains was observed. It was found that the open porosity, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion and bending strength of the cermets are sensitive to the volume content of Ni. The Ni-YSZ cermet containing 40 vol% Ni was ascertained to be the optimum composition. This composition offers sufficient open porosity of more than 30 %, superior electrical conductivities of 917.4 S/cm at $1000^{\circ}C$ and a moderate average thermal expansion coefficient of $12.6{\times}10^{-6}^{\circ}C^{-1}$ between room temperature and $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to recycle the coal bottom ashes (denoted as BA) produced from a thermal power plant, the artificial aggregates (denoted as AAs) containing BA and red clay were manufactured, and the physical properties of AAs were studied as a function of particle size of BA and batch compositions. As-received BA had 38 wt% coarse particles of above 2 mm and many unburned carbon mass and porous slag particles were co-existed. So the two particle sizes of BA, the fine (< 100 ${\mu}m$) and coarse (< 2 mm), were prepared by milling and screening process. The AAs containing fine BA sintered at $1100{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ had the higher bulk density and lower water absorption compared to the specimen made of coarse BA. The inside core of AAs manufactured by using coarse BA showed nonuniform and porous microstructure, while the AAs made of fine BA had a uniform and dense microstructure. In this research, the AAs containing BA and red clay with various bulk density (1.2~1.7) and water absorption (13~21 %) could be manufactured by controlling the particle size of BA and batch compositions, so the AAs of various physical properties could be applied to the wide fields such as construction/building materials in near future.

  • SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel, in which Ni and Cr contents are higher than in commercial SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steels, may be a candidate reactor pressure vessel (RPV) material with higher strength and toughness from its tempered martensitic microstructure. The inner surface of the RPV is weld-cladded with stainless steels to prevent corrosion. The goal of this study is to evaluate the microstructural properties of the clad interface between Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel and stainless weldment, and the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the properties. The properties of the clad interface were compared with those of commercial Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Multi-layer welding of model alloys with ER308L and ER309L stainless steel by the SAW method was performed, and then PWHT was conducted at $610^{\circ}C$ for 30 h. The microstructural changes of the clad interface were analyzed using OM, SEM and TEM, and micro-Vickers hardness tests were performed. Before PWHT, the heat affected zone (HAZ) showed higher hardness than base and weld metals due to formation of martensite after welding in both steels. In addition, the hardness of the HAZ in Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel was higher than that in Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel due to a comparatively high martensite fraction. The hardness of the HAZ decreased after PWHT in both steels, but the dark region was formed near the fusion line in which the hardness was locally high. In the case of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel, formation of fine Cr-carbides in the weld region near the fusion line by diffusion of C from the base metal resulted in locally high hardness in the dark region. However, the precipitates of the region in the Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel were similar to that in the base metal, and the hardness in the region was not greatly different from that in the base metal.

  • $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker have been synthesized by hydrothermal process at low temperature and pressure condition. The average length of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was about in the range of 300 nm to $1.5{\mu}m$. The average diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was 15 nm to 60 nm. The aspect ratio of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was below 12. The average length and diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker can be controlled by reaction temperature and time, KOH molar ratio. $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was synthesized from more than $210^{\circ}C$ and 4 h at reaction temperature and time. The length of the whisker is increased with increasing reaction temperature. Characterization of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was carried out using the XRD and FE-SEM.

  • Electrolytes are one of the essential components of a lithium-ion battery. They determine the battery's lifespan and cell characteristics. The dielectric constant is a key thermophysical property for determining how much salt can be dissociated and solvated in a solution. Hence, fast and reliable dielectric constant measurement is essential when formulating an electrolyte solution. This work implemented an open-ended coaxial probe (OECP) station as a quick and reliable tool to measure the complex permittivity spectra of electrolyte solutions. The capability of the OECP station was tested by measuring the complex permittivity of propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and their mixtures from 0.1 to 8 GHz at 288.15, 298.15, and 308.15 K. The obtained dielectric spectra were then interpreted based on dielectric relaxation models and thermodynamic theories. The measured static dielectric constant data agreed well with the data from previous studies. They were also correlated using the Wang-Anderko thermodynamic model, showing approximately a 1% deviation from the experimental data. In addition, the relaxation characteristics, including the relaxation time and the Cole-Davidson exponent, showed that the microstructure of the solution significantly changes at the propylene carbonate mole fraction of 0.4. These results and methodologies are expected to contribute to the further understanding of electrolyte solutions and ultimately lead to the optimization of electrolyte formulation for lithium-ion batteries.
