  • (Sm/Y)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were directionally grown by zone-melting process, haying large temperature gradient, In air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $({Sm/y})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] composite oxides by cold isostatic pressing(CIP) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $({Sm/y})_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 sample with CeO$_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (Sm/Y)1.8 matrix. Both samples, with/without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset Tc $\geq$ 90 K and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density Jc value of the $CeO_2$ addictive were $1{\times}10^5A/\textrm{cm}^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla.

  • A new precursor solution wilt low fluorine content was synthesized for MOD processing of coated conductors. In this study, the precursor solution for MOD processing was synthesized using F-free yttrium and copper precursor. It was shown that crack-free and uniform precursor films were formed after calcination in humidified oxygen atmosphere. Less than 2 hours were required to finish the calcination process. The relatively gradual weight loss during the calcination process is attributed to the feasibility of fast calcination profile. The calcined precursor film was converted to a YBCO film without any secondary phases after annealing in wet $Ar/O_2$ atmosphere. Fully converted film shows uniform microstructure and high critical current density. $(Jc=2.7MA/cm^2) $.

  • For many large-scale applications of high-temperature superconducting materials, large critical current density ($J_c$) in high applied magnetic fields are required. A number of methods have been reported to introduce artificial pinning centers in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ films for enhancement of their $J_c$. We studied the microstructures and characteristic of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ films fabricated on $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrates with ZnO nanorods as pinning centers. Au catalyst nanoparticles were synthesized on STO substrates with self assembled monolayer to control the number of ZnO nanorods. The density of Au nanoparticles is approximately $240{\sim}260{\mu}m^{-2}$ with diameters of $41{\sim}49nm$. ZnO nanorods were grown on STO by hot-walled PLD with Au nanoparticles. Typical size of ZnO nanorod was around 179 nm in diameter and $2{\sim}6{\mu}m$ in length respectively. YBCO films deposited directly on STO substrates show the c-axis orientation, while YBCO films with ZnO nanorods exhibit any mixed phases without any typical crystal orientation.

  • Cu based amorphous ($Cu_{54}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}Ni_{6}$) powders were deposited onto Al 6061 substrates by cold spray process with different powder preheating temperatures (below glass transition temperature: $350^{\circ}C$, near glass transition temperature: $430^{\circ}C$ and near crystallization temperature: $500^{\circ}C$). The microstructure and macroscopic properties (hardness, wear and corrosion) of Cu based amorphous coating layers were also investigated. X-ray diffraction results showed that cold sprayed Cu based amorphous coating layers of $300{\sim}350{\mu}m$ thickness could be well manufactured regardless of powder preheating temperature. Porosity measurements revealed that the coating layers of $430^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ preheating temperature conditions had lower porosity contents (0.88%, 0.93%) than that of the $350^{\circ}C$ preheating condition (4.87%). Hardness was measured as 374.8 Hv ($350^{\circ}C$), 436.3 Hv ($430^{\circ}C$) and 455.4 Hv ($500^{\circ}C$) for the Cu based amorphous coating layers, respectively. The results of the suga test for the wear resistance property also corresponded well to the hardness results. The critical anodic current density ($i_{c}$) according to powder preheating temperature conditions of $430^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of the sample preheated at $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The higher hardness, wear and corrosion resistances of the preheating conditions of near $T_{g}$ and $T_{x}$, compared to the properties of below $T_{g}$, could be well explained by the lower porosity of coating layer.

  • YBCO films have been synthesized using a spray pyrolysis method. We used nitrates of Y, Ba, Cu as precursors. Deposition was made on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single crystal substrate by spraying the mist of aqueous precursor solution generated by a concentric nozzle. The distance between concentric nozzle and substrate was 15 cm. C-axis oriented films were obtained at deposition temperature of $740{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ and working pressure of 20 Torr. Oxygen partial pressure was 3 Torr and substrate was transported with the speed ranging from 0.23 cm/min to 0.7 cm/min by reel to reel. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) observation revealed that films are smooth and highly textured with (001) planes parallel to substrate. Highest critical current density (Jc) was $1.38\;MA/cm^2$ at 77K and self-field for the film with a thickness of $0.5\;{\mu}m$ prepared at a substrate temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and $PO_2\;=3\;Torr$. The effect of temperature on the microstructure and YBCO phase formation will be discussed.

  • Electro-Discharge Sintering (EDS) employs a high-voltage/high-current-density pulse of electrical energy, discharged from a capacitor bank, to instantaneously consolidate powders. In the present study, a single pulse of 0.57-1.1 kJ/0.45 g-atomized spherical $Ti_{52}Zr_{28}Ni_{20}$ powders in size range of 10~30 and $30\sim50{\mu}m$ consisting of ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) and icosahedral phases were applied to examine the structural evolution of icosahedral phase during EDS. Structural investigation reveals that high electrical input energy facilitates complete decomposition of icosahedral phase into C14 laves and ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) phases. Moreover, critical input energy inducing decomposition of the icosahedral phase during EDS depends on the size of the powder. Porous Ti and W compacts have been fabricated by EDS using rectangular and spherical powders upon various input energy at a constant capacitance of $450{\mu}F$ in order to verify influence of powder shape on microstructure of porous compacts. Besides, generated heat (${\Delta}H$) during EDS, which is measured by an oscilloscope, is closely correlated with powder size.

  • High $J_c$ over 1 $MA/cm^2$ YBCO film has been successfully prepared using nitrate precursors by spray pyrolysis method. Aerosol drolpets generated using a concentric spray nozzle were directly sprayed on a $LaAlO_3$(100) single crystal substrate. The cation ratio of precursor solution was Y:Ba:Cu=1:2.65:1.35. The distance between nozzle and substrate was 15 cm. Deposition temperature was ranging from $750^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. Deposition pressure was 100 Torr, and oxygen partial pressure was varied from 10 Torr to 50 Torr. The microstructure, phase formation, texture development and superconducting properties of deposited films were largely changed with oxygen partial pressure. Deposited films showed a texture with(001) planes parallel to substrate plane. High quality film was obtained when film was deposited at $760^{\circ}C$ with an oxygen partial pressure of 30 Torr. The critical current density($J_c$) of the YBCO film was 1.75 $MA/cm^2$ at 77 K and self-field.

  • High $J_c\;YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ superconducting films have been fabricated $LaAlO_3(100)$ substrate by MOD method using dichloroacetic acid(DCA) as chelating solvent for preparing precursor solution. Heating rate was varied in order to optimize the calcination heat treatment condition in DCA-MOD method. Coated films were calcined at lower temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. The heating rate was calcined from $13.3^{\circ}C/min\;to\;0.28^{\circ}C/min$. Conversion heat treatment was performed $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. Surface and cross sectional SEM microstructures showed that particle sizes were increased with heating rate at a calcination step. The amount of pores was increased with heating rate in the calcined films. Dense microstructure and sharp texture were developed in an YBCO films after conversion heat treatment. A high critical current density (Jc) of $1.26MA/cm^2$ (@77 K and self-field) was obtained for the YBCO film which was prepared with a heating rate of $0.28^{\circ}C/min$.
