  • This study was to find the difficulties students faced in their mathematical learning and to identify the instructional dimensions a teacher provided for the students from multi-cultural background. Since the study was focused on the process of students' learning, the qualitative method was chosen through clinical interviews with 2 students in a total of 11 units which played a role of compensating their learning of mathematics as an extra curriculum. The students solved the computational problems relying on formal procedure without understanding of concepts and principles and solved the word problems based on own interpretation of certain words without semantic comprehension out of math sentences. As the instructional dimensions of teaching mathematics, tasks, a tool and classroom norm were found in the activities they performed. For the tasks, situated tasks, challenging tasks, tasks with lack of conditions, and open-ended exploratory tasks were used. As the tool, pictorial representations were very useful to describe their ideas. Finally, as the classroom norm, consider equity for everyone, and cooperate and encourage each other were found.

  • Recently, storytelling was emphasized in mathematics education for students to have interest in mathematics and active attitude about the mathematics. Storytelling can provide a meaningful mathematical context that motivates children to learning mathematics actively. And also, the power of storytelling for engaging children in mathematics learning was evident in the many research. According to this trend, the new mathematics textbook applying storytelling was developed. Already this textbook applying storytelling was used in grade 1-2 in 2013. Grade 3-4 will use this new textbook in 2014 and grade 5-6 will use new textbook in 2015. This study reviewed the mathematics educational meaning of storytelling and discussed the educational rationale of introducing the storytelling in mathematics education, and offered practical teaching method for applying storytelling in mathematics instruction.

  • This paper is a study on mathematical aspects that can be basic for understanding and applying the contents of machine learning. If you are familiar with mathematics in the field of computer science, you can create algorithms that can diversify researches and implement them faster, so you can implement many real-life ideas. There is no curriculum standard for mathematics in the field of machine learning, and there are many absolutely lacking mathematical contents that are taught in the curriculum presented at existing universities. Machine learning now includes speech recognition systems, search engines, automatic driving systems, process automation, object recognition, and more. Many applications that you want to implement combine a large amount of data with many variables into the components that the programmer generates. In this course, the mathematical areas required for computer engineer (CS) practitioners and computer engineering educators have become diverse and complex. It is important to analyze the mathematical content required by engineers and educators and the mathematics required in the field. This paper attempts to present an effective range design for the essential processes from the basic education content to the deepening education content for the development of many researches.

  • The conic sections are defined as algebraic expressions using the focus and the directrix in the high school curriculum. However it is difficult that students understand the conic sections without environment which they can manipulate the conic sections. To make up for this weak point, we have found the evidence for generating method of a conic section through a sundial and investigated the history of terms 'focus', 'directrix' and the tool of drawing them continuously.

  • Nowadays the education of Mathematics is more important than any other courses in the school. But the most students have felt the difficulty and uncomfortableness in studying Mathematics, especially the geometry course. Moreover teachers also consider that the teaching of geometry is the hardest part of Mathematics. Therefore we suggest an effective method of teaching the geometry course for the middle school students. We provide the activity papers which contain mathematics problems based on the practical life of students. And we analyze the effects of the activity papers using the questionnaire.

  • The present study seeks to provide an easy path to differential perceptions of students at the upper high school level by applying a story telling method and also, characteristically, to earn some time for class discussion by reducing learning time for simple calculational procedure through Computer Algebra System(CAS) tools. This study offers a clear example of storytelling textbooks through Sage. Hence, the study aims at enabling students who have practiced contents with Sage tools to deal with diverse and complicated calculation problems, if they learn to build up mathematical formulas for those problems.

  • The purpose of this article is to suggest using cooperative microteaching in pre-service mathematics teachers education based on their perceptions of it after actual application case. The background of this study is that cooperative learning came into the highlight as a good method to cultivate teachers' competencies for creativity and character education as well as students' creativity and character in the mathematics classroom. 20 pre-service mathematics teachers participated in their cooperative microteaching and 16 of them responded to the survey. The collected data showed that the merits of cooperative microteaching are to ease the burden of preparing for class, to discuss how to teach mathematics, to debate what lesson is better, to receive valuable feedback form their peer, and so on. Also, it provided them with the chance for self-improvement in that they kept to make up for the week points in their teaching behavior. Meanwhile, they wanted longer time to experience their teaching and their own lesson.

  • Introduction: According the 2011 Taiwanese Government Statistics, the lower secondary school enrollment number of the new-immigrant-children is about 200,000. As known, most of the new immigrants are from the Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia. In order to satisfy the increasing needs and demands on education of the children of new immigrant (CNI, henceforth), Taiwanese government not only develops, but also puts the after-school learning assistance policy into practice from 2006. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to explore the mathematics achievement of the CNI after the implementation of the after-school learning assistance policy (AsLA policy, henceforth). Purposes: Firstly, to compare the mathematics achievement of the CNI by countries. Secondly, to compare the mathematics performance among the CNI, the children from high-risk family (CHRF, henceforth) and the children of general families. Samples: The 2,452 samples, selected from two junior high schools located in central Taiwan, include 157 CNI, 522 CHRF. Methods: The main method used in this study is interval fuzzy number (IFN, henceforth) in order to compare the mathematics achievement of the children after the implementation of the AsLA policy from different type of families. Results: To reach the two purposes of this study. We can find the effectiveness of mathematics performance from three group's children of new immigrants, high-risk, general family. Therefore, the results provide one of the ways to review the new immigrant's education policy of after-school learning assistance in Taiwan.

  • In this article we study a reconstruction of mathematical knowledge on trigonometry by the method of ascent from the abstract to the concrete from the pedagogical viewpoint of dialectic. The direction of education is shifting in a way that emphasizes the active constitution of knowledge by the learning subjects from the perspective that knowledge is transferred from the teacher to the student. In mathematics education, active discussions on the construction of mathematical knowledge by learners have been going on since the late 1990s. In Korea, concepts and aspects of constructivism such as operational constructivism, radical constructivism, and social constructivism were introduced. However, examples of practical construction according to the direction of construction of mathematical knowledge are very hard to find. In this study, we discuss the direction of the actual construction of mathematical knowledge and suggest a concrete example of the actual construction of trigonometry knowledge from a constructivist point of view. In particular, we discuss the process of the construction of theoretical knowledge, the ascent from the abstract to the concrete, based on the literature study from the pedagogical viewpoint of dialectic, and show how to construct the mathematical knowledge on trigonometry by the method of ascent from the abstract to the concrete. Through this study, it is expected to introduce the new direction and new method of knowledge construction as 'the ascent from the abstract to the concrete', and to present the possibility of applying dialectic concepts to mathematics education.

  • We study a class of quasilinear wave equations with strong and nonlinear viscosity. By using the perturbation method for semilinear parabolic equations, we have established the fundamental results on existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on data of weak solutions.
