  • A modified Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) numerical method is used to predict the dynamics of a liquid drop of a low viscosity dilute polymer solution, forming in air from a circular nozzle. Viscoelastic effects are rep-resented using an Oldroyd-B model. Predicted drop shapes are compared with experimental observations. The main features, including the timing of the shape evolution and the 'bead-on-a-string' effect, are well reproduced by the simulations. The results confirm published conclusions of the third author, that the deformation is effectively Newtonian until near the time of Newtonian pinch-off and that the elastic stress becomes large in the pinch region due to the higher extensional flow there.

  • Different procedures for estimation of the extreme global wave hydroelastic responses in ships are discussed. Firstly, stochastic procedures for application in detailed numerical studies (CFD) are outlined. The use of the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) to generate critical wave episodes of short duration, less than 1 minute, with prescribed probability content is discussed for use in extreme response predictions including hydroelastic behaviour and slamming load events. The possibility of combining FORM results with Monte Carlo simulations is discussed for faster but still very accurate estimation of extreme responses. Secondly, stochastic procedures using measured time series of responses as input are considered. The Peak-over-Threshold procedure and the Weibull fitting are applied and discussed for the extreme value predictions including possible corrections for clustering effects.

  • Numerical investigation was carried out to analyze the hydrodynamic response of 4-column semi-submersible floaters, incorporating variations such as stepping and alterations in the shape/geometry of columns and pontoons, as well as tilting of main columns. Utilizing Ansys-AQWA, a hydrodynamic software based on panel method, simulations were executed for these scenarios. The simulations yielded insights into responses, excitation forces/moments, and pressure on the structure, facilitating a comparison between the models through a parametric study. It was observed that stepping of pontoons and tilting of columns led to reduced responses, forces, and pressures, reaching balance through appropriate stepping and tilting. Additionally, altering the geometry of columns and pontoons indicated the potential benefits of employing elliptical pontoons and pentagonal columns for enhanced response control.

  • For the vibration control of earthquake-excited buildings, an optimal design method of integrated control system considering soil-structure interaction is studied in this paper. Interaction between soils and the base of the building is simply modeled as lumped parameters and equations of motion are derived. The equations of motion are transformed into the state space equations and the probabilistic excitations such as Kanai-Tajumi power spectral density function is introduced. Then an optimization problem is formulated as finding hybrid or integrated control systems which minimizes the stochastic responses of the building structure for given constraints. In order to investigate the feasibility of the optimization method, an example design and numerical simulations are performed with tenstory building. Finally, numerical results are compared with a conventional design case that soil-structure interaction is not considered.

  • The fluid dynamic properties of a circular arc type sea anchor were calculated by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of the sea anchor was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The simulations were performed by assuming that the separations occur at edges. With time, the drag coefficient was almost constant but the lift coefficient oscillated in a cycle by von Karman's vortex street. As the camber ratios increase, the drag coefficient and Strouhal number were almost constant but the oscillating amplitude of the lift coefficient increased largely.

  • In this paper the author proposes a method of implementing a numerical model for threshold voltage ($V_{th}$) shift in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) into SPICE tools. $V_{th}$ shift is first numerically modeled by dividing the shift into sequentially ordered groups. The model is then used to derive a simulations model which takes into simulation parameters and calculation complexity. Finally, the numerical and simulation models are implemented in AIM-SPICE. The SPICE simulation results agree well with the $V_{th}$ shift obtained from an OTFT fabricated without any optimization. The proposed method is also used to implement the stretched-exponential time dependent $V_{th}$ shift in AIM-SPICE and the results show the proposed method is applicable to various types of $V_{th}$ shifts.

  • A fundamental study for the numerical scheme to simulate unsteady nonlinear waves by solving Euler equations is presented. First a conservation form and a non-conservation form of the Euler equations with a free surface fitted coordinate system are compared. Next, a time splitting fractional step method and an alternating direction implicit(ADI) method for the time integration are compared. For the comparative study, flow calculations around a bottom bump in a channel and a NACA 0012 hydrofoil in a flume are performed. The results show that the ADI method with a third order upwind differencing scheme is very efficient in reducing the computing time with keeping the accuracy, And, there is no distinct difference between two expression forms except that the non-conservative form shows faster wave propagating velocity than the conservation form. Some results are compared with experiments and show good agreement.

  • In the present study, we propose a virtual boundary method for simulation of massive inextensible flexible strings immersed in viscous fluid flow. The fluid motion is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations and a momentum forcing is added in order to bring the fluid to move at the same velocity with the immersed surface. A massive inextensible flexible string model is described by another set of equations with an additional momentum forcing which is a result of the fluid viscosity and the pressure difference across the string. The momentum forcing is calculated by a feedback loop. Simulations of several numerical examples are carried out, inlcuding a hanging string which starts moving under gravity without ambient fluid, a string swimming within a uniform flow and a uniform flow over two side-by side strings. The numerical results agree well with the theoretical analysis and previous experimental observations. Preliminary results of a swimming elongated fishlike body will also be presented.

  • During flight of the aircraft, the vortex merging phenomenon appears under the certain condition between co-rotating vortices which were generated at the wing tip and lifting-surface. And then these merged vortices at both sides show counter-rotating pattern to affect on the downstream of the aircraft. In this paper, the numerical simulations are conducted assuming this phenomenon in two-dimensional co-rotating or counter-rotating vortices pairs. Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were converted into Vorticity-Streamfunction form and the Galerkin spectral method was adopted. The third order Runge-Kutta method was used for time integration. The effects on the vortex merger and degree of vortex merger were investigated according to time, Reynolds number, and changes in the distance between two vortices.

  • A comparative study on the turbulent flaw simulation and the potential flaw analysis has been performed. A law Mach number preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver, using the multi-block grid method and a panel method based on the velocity potential, have been developed and validated by comparison to the experimental data. The present numerical analysis methods are applied to the ground effect problem around the NACA 4412 airfoil. It has been confirmed that the potential flaw analysis on the ground effect, using the image method, is consistent, to some degree, with the viscous calculations for high Reynolds number flows.
