COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) will be launch at end of year 2008. For speedy and security communication of COMS, KARl (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) decided encryption and compression design. Encryption design is based on DES (Data Encryption Standard), so that encryption key generation and management are important issues in COMS operation. And Compression is based on loss and lossless JPEG (Joint Photographic Export Group) standard. JPEG is one of generally using compression algorithm in image.
The shape of streamflow hydrograph during the early period of spring is very much controlled by the area and depth of snow cover especially in mountainous area. When we simulate the streamfolw of a watershed snowmelt, we need some information for snow cover extent and depth distribution as parameters and input data in the hydrological models. The purpose of this study is to suggest an extraction method of snow cover area and snow depth distribution using Terra MODIS image. Snow cover extent for South Korea was extracted for the period of December 2000 and April 2006. For the snow cover area, the snow depth was interpolated using the snow depth data from 69 meteorological observation stations. With these data, it is necessary to run a hydrological model considering the snow-related data and compare the simulated streamflow with the observed data and check the applicability for the snowmelt simulation.

Wind speed data constitute important weather information for aircrafts flying at low altitudes, such as drones. Currently, the accuracy of low altitude wind predictions is much lower than that of high-altitude wind predictions. Deep neural networks are proposed in this study as a method to improve wind speed forecast information. Deep neural networks mimic the learning process of the interactions among neurons in the brain, and it is used in various fields, such as recognition of image, sound, and texts, image and natural language processing, and pattern recognition in time-series. In this study, the deep neural network model is constructed using the wind prediction values generated by the numerical model as an input to improve the wind speed forecasts. Using the ground wind speed forecast data collected at the Boseong Meteorological Observation Tower, wind speed forecast values obtained by the numerical model are compared with those obtained by the model proposed in this study for the verification of the validity and compatibility of the proposed model.
In this study, an integrated GMS(Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) receiving ground system, which includes the real-time reception and image processing of WEFAX data, has been developed. The demodulator, PC demodulator, PC interface and application softwares of the system were made and integrated with the commercially available antenna and receiver. Hardwars of the system were described in this part. This system operates at IBM PC/AT or above. It can be used for students at school and for application research in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, hydrology and astronomy.
In this paper, we propose 3D cloud animation by cloud modeling method of 2D images retrieved from a meteorological satellite. First, on the satellite images, we locate numerous control points to perform thin-plate spline warping analysis between consecutive frames for the modeling of cloud motion. In addition, the spectrum channels of visible and infrared wavelengths are used to determine the amount and altitude of clouds for 3D cloud image reconstruction. Pre-integrated volume rendering method is used to achieve seamless inter-laminar shades in real-time using small number of slices of the volume data. The proposed method could successfully construct continuously moving 3D clouds from 2D satellite images at an acceptable speed and image quality.
The extratropically transitioning cyclones have been shown to have a large effect on weather system in the midlatitues and cause sometimes the severe weather phenomena. However, both operational forecasting and research aspect of ET remain a significant challenge. Because it is difficult to distinguish ET stage due to obscure configuration of the cyclone itself. Furthermore, any definition of ET should not only be precise enough to satisfy the needs of the operational and research communities. Therefore, the "operational deterministic process for ET" was proposed and has been used to diagnose both structure and subsequent process of ET in 2007. In this study, it has been examined the maximum wind and SST in the 1st step, satellite image in the 2nd step, sounding in the 3rd step, surface weather chart analysis in the final step. This operational manual has allowed better monitoring and understanding of the changes in the structure as ET occurs.
Ocean-air observation using an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) was conducted in the Mid-Yellow Sea off Korea during 8-10 July 2002. A water mass lower than 17$^{\circ}C$ around the Taean peninsula and a tidal front between 36$^{\circ}$20'N and 36$^{\circ}$30'N were observed. The horizontal distribution of air temperature was similar to that of sea surface temperature (SST). Hourly observation around Dukjuk island showed the cold and saline southwesterly and the warm and fresh northeasterly in phase with tidal current. Sea fogs two times formed at 2300 LST 8-0130 LST 9, and 0300-0600 LST 9 July 2002 during the observation period, respectively. During the initial stage of fogs, winds became northeasterly at the speed of 2-4m/s$^{-1}$, and air temperature dropped to 18$^{\circ}C$, as the North Pacific High weakened. The satellite image indicated that sea fogs formed over warm water in the western Yellow Sea and moved eastward toward the observation site, which could be called a steam fog. The fogs dissipated when wind speed and air temperature increased.

Recently the large scale of forest disaster such as landslide and forest fire gives a very bad impact on not only forest ecosystem but also farm business so that it has became the main issue of environmental problems. In this study, the landslide hazard area forecast method was developed by considering not only the topographic thematic maps based on GIS and satellite images but also amount of rainfall data, which are very important factors of landslide. Uljin-gun was selected as the study area and the GIS weight score and overlay analysis were applied to topographical map and meteorological observation map. Finally the landslide area distribution map was constructed by considering the evaluation criteria. Also, the accuracy could be acquired by comparing the landslide hazard area forecast map and real damaged area extracted from satellite image.
The nominal radiometric calibration equation and additional five algorithms are applied in the infrared channel radiometric calibration for the COMS (Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite) MI (Meteorological Imager). The processing end time of the radiometric calibration is directly related with the start time of geometric calibration processing since the geometric calibration processing is followed by that of the radiometric calibration. This paper describes comparison and analysis results for geometric calibration processing using two types of the radiometric calibration results, outputs from only the nominal radiometric calibration equation and outputs from the complete one (the nominal radiometric calibration equation with additional five algorithms), to propose a method with the earlier start time of the geometric calibration processing. Experimental results show that both of radiometric calibration results, from the nominal radiometric calibration equation with a fast processing speed and from the complete one with accurate radiometric values, can be used in the geometric calibration as the appropriate inputs because those processing results satisfied the requirements of geometric calibration processing accuracy. Thus the radiometric calibration results from the nominal radiometric calibration equation can be used to improve geometric calibration processing time.
An unusual long-period and heavy snowfall occurred in the Yeongdong region from 6 to 14 February 2014. This event produced snowfall total of 194.8 cm and the recordbreaking 9-day snowfall duration in the 103-year local record at Gangneung. In this study, satellite-derived cloud-top brightness temperatures from the infrared channel in the atmospheric window ($10{\mu}m{\sim}11{\mu}m$) are examined to find out the characteristics of clouds related with this heavy snowfall event. The analysis results reveal that a majority of precipitation is related with the low-level stratiform clouds whose cloud-top brightness temperatures are distributed from -15 to $-20^{\circ}C$ and their standard deviations over the analysis domain (${\sim}1,000km^2$, 37 satellite pixels) are less than $2^{\circ}C$. It is also found that in the above temperature range precipitation intensity tends to increase with colder temperature. When the temperatures are warmer than $-15^{\circ}C$, there is no precipitation or light precipitation. Furthermore this relation is confirmed from the examination of some other heavy snowfall events and light precipitation events which are related with the low-level stratiform clouds. This precipitation-brightness temperature relation may be explained by the combined effect of ice crystal growth processes: the maximum in dendritic ice-crystal growth occurs at about $-15^{\circ}C$ and the activation of ice nuclei begins below temperatures from approximately -7 to $-16^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition of the ice nuclei.
