Numerical modelling and finite element analysis of stress wave propagation for ultrasonic pulse velocity testing of concrete

  • Stress wave propagation through concrete is simulated by finite element analysis. The concrete medium is modeled as a homogeneous material with smeared properties to investigate and establish the suitable finite element analysis method (explicit versus implicit) and analysis parameters (element size, and solution time increment) also suitable for rigorous investigation. In the next step, finite element analysis model of the medium is developed using a digital image processing technique, which distinguishes the mortar and aggregate phases of concrete. The mortar and aggregate phase topologies are, then, directly mapped to the finite element mesh to form a heterogeneous concrete model. The heterogeneous concrete model is then used to simulate wave propagation. The veracity of the model is demonstrated by evaluating the intrinsic parameters of nondestructive ultrasonic pulse velocity testing of concrete. Quantitative relationships between aggregate size and testing frequency for nondestructive testing are presented.

  • A small strain and elastoplastic formulation of Polygonal Element Method (PEM) is developed for efficient analysis of elastoplastic solids. In this work, the polygonal elements are constructed based on traditional triangular finite meshes. The construction method of polygonal mesh can directly utilize the sophisticated triangularization algorithm and reduce the difficulty in generating polygonal elements. The Wachspress rational finite element basis function is used to construct the approximations of polygonal elements. The incremental variational form and a von Mises type model are used for non-linear elastoplastic analysis. Several small strain elastoplastic numerical examples are presented to verify the advantages and the accuracy of the numerical formulation.

  • The ADI method was introduced by Peaceman and Rachford [6] in 1955, to solve the discretized boundary value problems for elliptic and parabolic PDEs. The finite difference discretization of the model elliptic problem $$ (1) -\Delta u = f, \Omega = [0, 1] \times [0, 1] $$ $$ u = 0 on \delta \Omega $$ with 5-point centered finite difference discretization, with n +2 mesh-points in the x - direction and m + 2 points in the y direction, leads to the solution of a linear system of equations of the form $$ (2) Au = b $$ where A is a matrix of dimension $N = n \times m$. Without loss of generality and for the sake of simplicity, we will assume for the remainder of this paper that m = n, so that $N = n^2$.

  • The combined shear and compression behaviors of seismic isolation rubber bearings are analyzed using the hyperelasticity material option of the ABAQUS computer program. The purpose of the analysis is to predict the behavior of laminated rubber bearing before the several tests. Some kinds of strain energy density functions are used as constitutive law for rubber itself having the hyperelasticity. The results are compared with test data peformed in Italy The analysis results show a little different with experimental results depending on the constitutive model and the refinement of finite element. The high order form of strain energy density functions results in good agreements and the mesh refinement above two for one rubber layer is enough to get good results.

Computation of dilute polymer solution flows using BCF-RBFN based method and domain decomposition technique

  • This paper reports the suitability of a domain decomposition technique for the hybrid simulation of dilute polymer solution flows using Eulerian Brownian dynamics and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) based methods. The Brownian Configuration Fields (BCF) and RBFN method incorporates the features of the BCF scheme (which render both closed form constitutive equations and a particle tracking process unnecessary) and a mesh-less method (which eliminates element-based discretisation of domains). However, when dealing with large scale problems, there appear several difficulties: the high computational time associated with the Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST), and the ill-condition of the system matrix associated with the RBFN. One way to overcome these disadvantages is to use parallel domain decomposition (DD) techniques. This approach makes the BCF-RBFN method more suitable for large scale problems.

  • In this paper we deal with behavior of the magnetic abrasive using Ba-Ferrite on polishing characteristics in a new internal finishing of STS304 pipe applying magnetic abrasive polishing. The magnetic abrasive using Ba-Ferrite grain WA was used to resin bond fabricated at low temperature. And Ba-Ferrite of magnetic abrasive powder was crused into 200 mesh. The previous research made an experiment in the static and the dynamic state on the movement of magnetic abrasive grain. In this paper. We investigated into the changes of the movement of magnetic abrasive grain. In reference to this result. we have made the experiment which is set under the condition of the magnetic flux density. polishing velocity according to the form of magnetic brush.

  • The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.

  • Z-map model is the most widely used model for NC simulation and verification. But it has several limitations to get a high precision, to apply 5 axis machining simulation. In this paper, we tried to use quadtree for searching cutting region. Quadtree representation of two dimensional objects is performed with a tree that describes the recursive subdivision. By using these quadtree model. storage requirements were reduced. And also, recursive subdivision was processed in the boundries, so, useless computation could be reduced, too. To get more high Accuracy, we applied the supersampling method in the boundaries. The Supersampling method is the most common form of the antialiasing and usually used with polygon mesh rendering in computer graphics To verify quadtree model we compared simulated results with z-map model and enhanced z-map model

  • The cation exchange chromatographic method for the analysis of Babbitt metal has been studied. The quantitative separation of the mixture of Sb, Cu, Pb, and Sn ions has been obtained by elution, through 5cm column of resin, Rexyn 101 (Na form, 100~200 mesh), using 0.1 M NaCl solution for Sb, pH 4.5 and pH 7 solution of 0.01 M Na-Citrate + 0.1 M $NaNO_3$ for Cu and Pb, and 2NHCl solution for Sn as eluent.

고추 Oleoresin의 추출에 관한 연구 (Extraction of Oleoresin from Korean Red Pepper)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimal condition of the extraction of red pepper oleoresin. The yield of oleoresin form red pepper was 24~28% when it was extracted by ethanol and methanol. and 8~10% by acetone, ethylene dichloride and n-hexane. But more than 60% of portion in alcohol extracts were moisture and sugars. Capsaicin and pigment were extracted more than 70% of those in red pepper when it was extracted by ethylene dichloride Those useful components were extracted most efficiently by mixed solvents of ethanol and ethylene dichloride at the ratio of 50:150. other extracting conditions were investigated in this studies, such as optimal extraction time was more than 3 hours, temperature was 55$^{\circ}C$ and particle size was finer than 250 mesh
