ESTIMATES OF NET AIR-SEA FLUXES FOR THE TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL ATLANTIC BASED ON SATELLITE DATA

  • We estimate the net heat flux in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean using satellite data. These fluxes are related to changes in sea surface temperature (SST). This variable influences atmospheric circulations and is indicative of surface and subsurface oceanic circulations. We employ data from the geostationary METEOSAT-7 and 8 satellites and from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) for the shortwave and long-wave radiative fluxes, and for estimates of SST. For turbulent flux calculations, we use the bulk aerodynamic method with satellite estimates for wind speed and atmospheric humidity and temperature.

  • The mobilization of food reserves and ultrastructural changes in th cotyledons of germinating soybean seeds (Glycine max L. Mer. Cultivar Amsoy) and seedlings were studied by using light and transmission electron microscopy. When germinating began, the cotyledon tissues were packed with protein an lipid bodies. Mobilization of the reserves started in epidermis and vascular bundles. After three days of seedling growth, significant reductions of protein and lipid bodies were observed; concurrently, the numbers of starch grains, glyoxysoms, and mitochondria were increased. These ultrastructural changes are discussed with reference to the metabolism of the germinating soybean seeds and seedlings.

  • This paper describes fabrication and characteristics of metal thin-film pressure sensor for working at high temperature. The proposed pressure sensor consists of a chrom thin-film, patterned on a Wheatstone bridge configuration, sputter-deposited onto thermally oxidized Si membranes with an aluminium interconnection layer. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a low temperature coefficient of resistance, high-sensitivity, low non-linearity and excellent temperature stability. The sensitivity is 1.097 $\sim$ 1.21 mV/V kgf/$cm^2$ in the temperature range of 25 $\sim$ $200^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS.

  • It was found that the rapidly changeable consonant's conlponents of the Korean speech can not be analyzed precisely by the method of frequency analysis, but only by the method of frequency synthesis based on the speech pattern obtained from sona-graph. The following two methods mer mainly: One was to extract the frequency region of Consortarts, and the other was to observe how the mode of the Formant of the Korean Vowel, $\mid$$\mid$, following after some consonants. changes both by the articulation manner and by the articulation position.

  • 지상파 방송 3사(KBS/MBC/SBS) 수도권 본방송 파라미터와 동일하게 설정한 제주테크노파크 100W 실험국에서 ATSC 3.0 신호를 발사한 뒤, 제주시내 일대를 이동하면서 양시청 여부는 물론 실측값을 수집하였다. 결론적으로, 현재 전송파라미터 구성으로 송수신 정합에 이상 없이, 기술적인 관점에서 수도권 모바일HD 본방송이 가능함을 검증하였고, 커버리지 산출에 필수적인 물리계층 성능 지표인 ESR5에 대한 기준값, 즉 변조오류율(MER) 기준으로 11.3dB, 수신 신호 세기(Level) 기준으로 -85.0dBm 정도임을 도출하였다.

An Efficient Identification of 68 Apple Cultivars Using a Cultivar Identification Diagram (CID) Strategy and RAPD Markers

  • The study aimed to establish an efficient tool for cultivar identification and characterization being the first steps of apple introduction and improvement program. We utilized a method to efficiently record DNA molecular fingerprints of plant individuals genotyped by RAPD, which could be used as efficient reference information for quick plant identification. Ten of sixty 11-mer primers were screened to identify the 68 apple genotypes which could be distinguished by a combination of several primers. All cultivars were easily identified by the corresponding primers marked on the cultivar identification diagram (CID). The results indicated that the CID strategy developed and employed in the apple cultivar identification could be vital in the utilization of DNA marker in other plants as well as the development of the apple industry.

  • Turnip mosaic virus)TuMV-Ca) was isolated from a Chinese cabbage showing severe mosaic and black necrotic spots symptoms in Korea. The virus was identified as a strain of TuMV by its host range test, particle morphology, serology, double stranded RNA analysis. For detection of the virus, reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) was performed with a set of 18-mer TuMV-specific primers to amplify a 876 bp DNA fragment The virus was rapidly detected from total nucleic acids of virus infected tissues as well as native viral RNA of purified virion particles by RT-PCR. Detection limit of the viral RNA by RT-PCR was 10 fg.

  • 1. 아한대수의 전형적 지표종인 Sagitta elegans는 동해에서 대마난류축을 제외 하고는 전역에 균등히 분포하고 있으며, 표층 및 수직채집상으로 보아 감포동남방 57리 지점의 다수출현은 잠류남하하는 한류 및 저층냉수의 용승에 기인함을 실증하고 있으며, 한류의 이동은 외양에서는 축산원해에서 표면 이하로 잠류남하하는 것으로 본다. 2. Sagitta bedoti는 전역에 걸쳐, 난류 및 중간수역에서 광범하게 분포되어 있으며 남해측에는 난류역을 피하고 제주서남방 및 서측에 풍부함으로서 냉수역 및 중간수대의 지표종이 되고 있다. 한편 난류성인 Sagitta enflata, Sagitta minima 와 Sagitta serratodentataa, Pterosagitta drace 등은 서해를 제외하고는 광범한 분포상을 시현하고 있으나 특히 남해에서는 난류주류역에 우세하였다. 생태상으로 보아 Sagatta enflata는 순표층성인데 반하여 Sagatta minima는 중층성으로서 난류의 강약 및 유동을 지표하는 종류로서 가치가 크다고 본다. 3. Sagitta crassa는 서해수의 지표종이며 동해 및 제주서남방에 대량출현하여 저철연안수의 특유한 지표역으 맡고 있다.

Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Variation in Porhyra yezoensis and P. tenera

  • The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used to anlayze six isolates of two species of Porphyra, P. yezoensis and P. tenera. Four 21-mer prrmers were combined randomly into six groups of double primers and screened for DNA amplification using nuclear and chloroplast tempate DNA. The RAPD patterns resulting from RnRc and CnCc primers provided evidence for both genetically homo-and heterogeneous populations of P. yezoensis and P. tenera. Similarity values obtained by RnRc primer analysis of nuclear DNA varied from 0.364 to 0.714 and those of chloroplast DNA were high, ranging from 0.727 to 1.000, except for P. yezoensis (Enoura).

  • An RNase P ribozyme library has been developed as a tool for functional genomics studies. Each clone of this library contains a random 18-mer and the sequence of M1 RNA, the catalytic subunit of RNase P. Repression of target gene expression is thus achieved by the complementary binding of mRNA to the random guide sequence and the successive target cleavage via M1 RNA. Cellular expression of the ribozyme expression was confirmed, and EGFP mRNA was used as a model to demonstrate that the RNase P ribozyme expression system can inhibit the target gene expression. The constructed RNase P ribozyme library has a complexity of $1.4\times10^7$. This novel library system should become a useful in functional genomics, to identify novel gene functions in mammalian cells.
