The image of ideal woman and the preference of clothing in the situation of first impression formation (첫인상 형성 상황에서의 이상적 여성상과 의복스타일 선호도)

  • This study tried to investigate whether characteristics of the perceiver and image of ideal woman made differences in the important factors for the selection clothing and the preference of clothing. A poll of 650 men & women between the ages of 20-39 living in Daegu was taken for this study. Factor analysis, cluster analysis, frequency, ANOVA-test, t-test, and $\chi$$^2$-test were implemented with the SPSS-package. The characteristics of clothing types used in this study included: sexy, masculine, feminine, dramatic, elegant-classic, and casual. The results were as follows. 1. In the situation of first impression formation, the characteristics of the perceiver made differences in the selection of clothing types. Women took self-satisfaction and fashion factors to be more important than men, so did persons in their 20s than 30s. And the unmarried took self-satisfaction factor to be more important than the married. 2. Men and women had different images of the ideal woman. Under special situations of first impression formation, such as, formal blind dates on the condition of marriage and casual blind dates, there were differences in clothing preference.

A Study on Men's Suit Purchasing Behaviors (Part II) Focus on Men in Their 20's∼40's- (남성 정장 구매행동에 관한 연구(제2보) -20∼40대 남성을 중심으로-)

  • This study was attempted to segment the male consumers' market for men's suit based on brand preferences and to identify the group differences in apparel purchasing behaviors and demographic features and to suggest basic information applicable to marketing strategy. 705 men were selected for the study; they were in their twenties through forties, and they lived in Seoul and its suburbs. 655 survey questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. Using the SAS package, frequency, factors, reliability, correlation, genealogical group analysis, distribution analysis, the ($\chi$$^2$-test and the Duncan test for verification were actualized for analysis. The findings of this study were as follows: First, male-suit consumers tend to prefer the national brand(61.07%), licensed brand(19.39%), volume character brand(7.63%), prestige character brand(6.56%), and directly imported brand(5.34%) in order. Second, there were significant differences in apparel shopping orientations, purchasing behavior variables and demographic variables among the 5 classified groups.

An Analysis of Trend and Design Characteristics on the Korea Men's Business Casual (한국 남성 비즈니스 캐주얼의 경향 및 디자인 특성)

  • Business Casual has been launched because of 'Friday Wear' in the 1990s and in Korea, the business casual has been settled under the influence of the five-day work week. The idea of business casual is that 'Business' and 'Casual wear' are combined. It is the attire that people should wear the jacket for formality and people can wear both on or off duty. As a result of the analysis, based on this, of the characteristics of men's business casual appeared in Seoul collections from 2009 till now, they can be classified in 'Classic & Traditional business casual', 'Modern business casual', 'Natural business casual', 'Feminine business casual' and 'Sporty business casual'. As a result of the analysis of the design characteristics of the Korean men's business casual and the trend, based on the content of the analysis of Seoul Collection, 'Classical Classic & the Traditional', 'Modern of the Contemporary design', 'Natural of the Natural design' and 'the Sporty business casual of the Separate Coordination' including jeans, have presented themselves. Also, as a result of the analysis of Korean business men's business casual according to the classification of the design characteristics in Chapter III, 'Classic & Traditional business casual' account for the majority and then 'Sporty', 'Modern' and 'Natural business casual' account for the rest in order. 'Feminine business casual' hasn't presented itself. As a result of the comparative analysis of the design characteristics in Chapter III & IV, Korean business men's business casual has been concentrated on 'Classical & Traditional' and the design characteristics have not appeared in variety. There has been no such audacious attempt, and items, the characteristics of coordination, colors and materials are not in variety compared to the collection. Meanwhile, as a result of the subsistent characteristics of Koran business men's business casual, the characteristics of business men's business casual can be said to represent themselves in "Separate Coordination with the previous items of formal suits".

Male Body Image Appearing on the Western Men's Costume in the Baroque Era (바로크(Baroque) 양식 시대 서양 남성복에 나타난 남성의 몸 이미지)

  • This research seeks to analyze western men's costume in the Baroque era in relation to men's physical beauty from its most detailed and interesting perspective to fomulate a plausible reasoning related to the aesthetic sense of body as expressed in men's costume. This research used national and international books, theses and internet data upon which to base a literature review for a correct understanding of Baroque style and at the same time empirical research to analyze the body image expressed in men's costume. The Baroque style expressed in the 17th century costume offered a dynamic feeling through wavy curves, and its brilliant and colorful decorations created a passionate and charming mood resembling a flame. Accordingly, this research studied the body image as it appeared in the form of 17th century western men's costume by dividing it into the contact beauty of the human body and the manner of hiding the architectural beauty of the human body. First, the exposed silhouette by clothing coming into contact with the human body could be found mainly in upper-class men's costume in the first half of the 17th century. The shorter and tighter doublets and knee breeches could be analyzed in terms of erotic imagery that emphasized masculinity, aristocratic imagery that stressed a distinctive status, and geometric imagery that expressed a triangular pattern. Second, the constructive expression by hiding the human body could be found in upper-class men's costume starting in the mid-17 century. The wearing of the justaucorps could be studied in terms of how it came into contact with the beauty of the human body but also how this clothing style the hid the architectural beauty of human body.

The Effect of Media and Appearance Concern on Appearance Management of Workers (미디어 및 외모관심도가 직장인의 외모관리에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether a degree of media and appearance concern have an effect on appearance management of workers, and to analyze difference of appearance management with worker's men and women. A survey was conducted from September 20 to October 2 in 2006, among worker's men and women. The 538 subjects were used to statistics, and the statistical analysis methods were frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, t-test, and multiple regression analysis. First, a degree of media concern factors were determined to be media-advertisement concern, media-information concern. And a degree of appearance concern factors were determined to be appearance-styling concern, appearance-management concern. Second, a degree of media and appearance concern factors had an effect on appearance management of workers. Therefore, the more a degree of media and appearance concern was higher, the more appearance management was higher. Third, worker's women than men were shown to have many concern about media, appearance concern and appearance management.

Gender Characteristics in Contemporary Men's Fashion - Focusing on the Characteristics of Metrosexual and $\ddot{U}$bersexual - (현대 남성패션에 나타난 젠더 특성 - 메트로 섹슈얼과 위버섹슈얼의 특성을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to review changes of gender identity of men as a sexual role changes and their cognition on fashion and to analyze changes and features of their fashion required in the diversified era and suggest implications for future men's fashion design. To understand a correlation between a change of men's gender styles and fashion and aesthetic features and differences by gender style, this study analyzed significant brands of the men's design market. The results of this study are as followings. First, metrosexual and uebersexual were mixed in the 1990's and the 2000's. The ratio of uebersexual in the 1990's was higher as three times as metrosexual. On the other hand, the ratio of metrosexual in the 2000's was higher than uebersexual by about 3.5%. It implicates that there were significant changes in design of men's clothes between the 1990's and the 2000's. Second, aesthetic properties and differences of metrosexual and uebersexual obtained from the survey. Metrosexual fashion uses almost all details and has no limit in using materials and accessories. The other side, uebersexual fashion rarely has details. In conclusion, this study showed that the relationship between male and fashion on the social and cultural phenomena. which have been recognized that there is a low correlation, is being newly established as a sexual role changes by gender.

  • This study was attempted to examine male consumers'suit purchasing Behavior of subdivided groups according to apparel shopping orientation in men's suit purchasing and to suggest basic information applicable to marketing. The sample was taken from 705 men who were aged twenties through forties living in and suburbs. A total of 655 questionnaires were used in the final statistical analysis using factor analysis, reliability test, ANOVA, Duncan test, and X$^2$-test. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The dimensions of apparel shopping orientation were composed of economical, brand/store loyalty, fashion consciousness and convenience shopping orientation. 2. The dimensions of apparel store attributes were composed of atmosphere and service, convenient shopping, fashion and sale promotion, price, quality and reputation. 3. Three groups were classified after group analysis of four factors in male consumers'apparel shopping orientation: group focusing on convenience (47.2%), group focusing enjoyment of shopping(31.0%), and group focusing economic aspects(21.8%). Additionally differences of the three groups were examined according to importance of store attributes, use of information sources, purchasing Behavior, clothing evaluation criteria and demographic variables.

A Study on Classification of Chinese Men's Body Types - Focused in Beijing and Shanghai -

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for some basic data useful to production of the apparels fit and measured well for the Chinese men. For this purpose, 389 men aged between 20 and 49 and living in Beijing and Shanghai, China were sampled to be measured for their constitutions. Then, their constitutions were classified and thereupon, according to the Men's Wear Specifications (GB/T 1335.1-1997), National Standards of People's Republic of China. The collected data were statistically processed using SAS 6.12 for technical statistical analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, group-wise analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. As a result of the factor analysis aiming to determine Chinese men's constitutional components, five components could be identified: constitutional obesity, lateral body size, longitudinal body size, shoulder and back width, and shoulder drooping. 2. As a result of classifying Chinese men's constitutions according to drop measurements, four types could be identified. Y type had the lowest obesity and the highest longitudinal body size. A type had a lower obesity and had an average longitudinal body size. B Type had the second highest obesity, the smallest longitudinal body size and shoulders/back width. C Type had the highest obesity, upper body length and shoulders/back width. 3. In terms of distribution, 'B' type (39.10%) of the sample, followed by 'A' type (29.26%), 'C' type (19.95%) and 'Y' type (11.70%). In all, the results of this study suggests that 'B' type represents the Chinese men in contrast with GB specifying that 'A' type represents the Chinese men. On the other hand, Beijing region was dominated most by 'B' type (37.06%), followed by 'A' type (28.82%), 'C' type (22.35%) and 'Y' type (11.76%), while Shanghai region was dominated most by 'B' type (41.13%), followed by 'A' type (31.21%), 'C' type (19.15%) and 'Y' type (8.51%).

Types of perception on the body shape of the elderly men

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for the development of clothing that can improve the satisfaction of body shape of elderly men by examining subjective characteristics and characteristics of perception type of older men's body shape. Using the Q methodology, I investigated and analyzed the process of formation and main characteristics of subjectivity of various types of recognition that elderly men express about their body shape. There were four types of perception of body shape in elderly men: flat hip and bird legs skinny body, back bent and abdominal obese body, thick neck and upper body development body, forward cervical neck and protruding abdomen obese body. The actual body shape of elderly men was classified according to the bust, waist circumference, hip circumference, and body part angle. But recognition body shape of elderly men was classified by visual factors like the abdomen, the angle of the neck, the inclination of the back, the slope of the waist, and the degree of obesity. It is necessary to consider the trend of silver fashion which is increasing in demand. In addition, it is necessary to develop clothing patterns of comfortable fit through ergonomic study on the physical characteristics of older men. Consideration should be given to the design and pattern that can reduce the difference between the ideal body shape and the body shape recognized by older men.

Middle-aged Consumers' Preferences for Clothing Images (중년 남녀 소비자의 선호 의복이미지에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of the study were to explore differences in preference for clothing images according to wearing situations and clothing product involvement. A questionnaire was developed by the researcher and was collected by 101 men and 100 women aged between 40 and 59. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, repeated measure ANOVA, t-test adjusted by Bonferroni, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test. The results of the study showed that clothing images were classified into five factors including hard cold image, modern urban image, bold unique image, and heavy luxurious image. There were significant differences in preference among clothing images according to wearing situations and clothing product involvement. While modern urbane image was most preferred, hard cold image was least preferred in both formal and informal wearing situations, and for either high or low involvement clothing products. Also, there were significant differences in clothing image preference according to wearing situations and product involvement. In formal situations, stronger preference for modern urban image and heavy luxurious image showed than in informal situations, and bold unique image and heavy luxurious image were more preferred for high involvement clothing product than for low involvement clothing product. In addition, there were significant differences in preferences for clothing images between groups according to gender and age. In both formal and informal situations, men showed stronger preferences than women for hard cold image, but women for bold unique image. For either high or low involvement clothing products, men preferred hard cold image, modern urban image and heavy luxurious image more than women, but women preferred bold unique image more than men. Lastly, for high involvement clothing product, subjects aged fifties showed stronger preferences than forties for modern urban image and heavy luxurious image, but for low involvement clothing product, modern urban image was more preferred.
