  • The poultry plays a crucial role in the animal industry, providing humans with efficient, high-quality animal protein. The rapid growth and short generational intervals of broilers offer significant benefits compared to other economic animals. This growth and increased muscle mass in modern commercial broilers result from advancements in breeding. However, the high productivity of contemporary broilers indicates they are approaching their physiological limits, with excessive fat accumulation becoming a significant industry issue. This not only reduces lean meat yield and feed efficiency but also negatively impacts consumers, especially due to problematic abdominal fat, which consumes more energy than lean meat production. Laying hens, reared for extended periods, maintain high productivity, producing a substantial number of eggs. This productivity in laying hens, akin to broilers, stems from genetic selection and breeding. For egg production, laying hens require physiological support for necessary nutrients. In this context, yolk fat accumulation is a critical physiological process. Lipoproteins, essential in avian lipid metabolism, are vital for yolk and body fat accumulation. Understanding these lipoproteins and their metabolism is key to developing healthier, more productive animals, offering economic benefits to farmers and improved nutritional quality to consumers. This review focuses on the physiological aspects of dietary fat transport, fatty acid biosynthesis in the liver, fat accumulation in the abdomen and muscles, and lipid deposition in egg yolks in chickens. It also highlights recent research trends in the regulation of fat metabolism in poultry.

  • Among the various plastic polymer molding methods, thermoplastic resins are most commonly used for mass production due to their suitability for high-volume manufacturing. However, recently, thermosetting resins have been utilized depending on product design and functionality, necessitating appropriate mold design and injection conditions to achieve suitable molded products. Therefore, resin selection must be considered not only in terms of product design but also based on functionality, taking into account the physical and mechanical properties of the resin. Additionally, since the flow characteristics of the resin are critical in injection molding, molding conditions should be set according to the thermal, physical, and rheological properties of the resin. This study focuses on the effects of filler content (glass fiber) in thermosetting fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), specifically Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) resin, which is crucial for thermal deformation in automotive motor housing products. The resins used in this study include Generic BMC1 resin, BMC1 with 15% glass fiber, and BMC1 with 30% glass fiber. The research employs CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) to investigate strain under basic conditions for the BMC resin and the strain variations with the addition of glass fiber. It also examines the impact of filler content on injection molding conditions, specifically mold temperature and curing time. Experimental results indicate that mold temperature has the most significant effect among the injection conditions, while the impact of curing time was relatively minor.

  • Workers' periodic health examination is the main tools used to manage the health problems of most workers in Korea. The most common health problem found in workers' periodic health examination is liver disorder. Liver disorder is also one of the most common health problems in general population and one of the leading causes of mortality in adult population. Regulation proposed by government (No. 207, Ministry of Labor, 1992) defines the criteria for selection of workers with the liver dysfunction for further evaluative examination and the examination items used for diagnosis of the workers with liver dysfunction. This study was designed to evaluate the proficiency of each examination items presently defined in Regulation and propose the optimal examination items for detection of the liver disorders found by workers' periodic health examination. Study subjects are 186 workers with abnormal liver function tests in screening examination of workers' periodic health examination. Questionnaire survey including past history of liver disorder, drinking history, height and weight was done. Physical examination by physician, routine test items defined by Regulation (SGOT, SGPT, $\gamma$-GTP, protein, albumin, total and direct bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, $\alpha$-feto protein, HBsAg and anti-HBs), anti-HCV antibody test and liver ultrasonography were done. Results are as follows; 1. Result of evaluative examination utilizing only the items defined in Regulation was; There were 75 workers with suspected live. disorder(40.3%), 63 with no liver dysfunction (33.9%), 13 with suspected hepatitis B(7.0%), 10 workers with hepatitis B(5.4%), 10 workers with hepatitis B carrier state(5.4%), 10 with alcoholic liver disorders(5.4%), 5 with fatty liver(2.7%). When alternative diagnostic criteria applying additional examination items (drinking history, body mass index, anti-HCV antibody and ultrasonography) diagnosability of liver disorder was increased. When all four items were included, final results were; 23 workers (17.8%) with hepatitis B (10 carriers, 13 suspects and 10 hepatitis B), 10 (5.4%) with hepatitis C(4 carriers, 5 suspects and 1 hepatitis C), 13(7.0%) with alcoholic liver disorder, 45(24.2%) with fatty liver (40 suspects, 5 fatty liver), 410%) with suspected liver disorders and 44 (23.7%) with normal liver. 2. Of examination items defined by Regulation, only SGOT, SGPT, $\gamma$-GTP and HBsAg were significantly different in abnormal rate and mean value, and all other laboratory findings did not showed significant difference between two groups. Drinking history, body mass index and anti-HCV antibody test which are the items that authors included in this study, also showed significant difference between two groups. Utilization of body mass index (BMI) for abnormal liver function group in diagnosis of fatty liver had high specificity (97.6%) but sensitivity (22.3%) was low. Therefore we suggest that SGOT, SGPT, $\gamma$-GTP, HBsAg, alcohol drinking history, BMI and anti-HCV Ab were useful for diagnosis of liver disorders among worker's periodic health examination.

  • Even though the microalgal species of Isochrysis and Pavlova are widely used as live food in bivalve hatcheries, they are difficult to culture in mass during the summer season. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the optimum species or strains of Isochrysis and Pavlova to produce good growth and high contents of fatty acids at temperatures over $30^{\circ}C$. Four species of Isochrysis (I. galbana KMMCC12, I. galbana KMMCC214, I. aff. galbana, and Isochrysis sp.) and four of Pavlova (P. lutheri, P. gyrans, P. viridis, and Pavlova sp.) were cultured at $25^{\circ}C$, $29^{\circ}C$, and $33^{\circ}C$, and then analyzed for specific growth rate and fatty acid composition. Microalgae were cultured in f/2 medium at 23 psu and continuous light of $80{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. For the I. galbana, growth rates were highest at $29^{\circ}C$ and decreased at $33^{\circ}C$ to the level observed at $25^{\circ}C$. I. galbana (KMMCC12) and Isochrysis sp. cultured at $29^{\circ}C$ and $33^{\circ}C$, respectively, exhibited the highest growth rates of all Isochrysis species. In terms of fatty acids, I. galbana (KMMCC12) contained higher contents of PUFA and n-3 HUFA at $33^{\circ}C$ than did Isochrysis sp. For species of Pavlova, growth rates of P. gyrans and P. viridis at $29^{\circ}C$ and $33^{\circ}C$, respectively, were higher than those of the other Pavlova species. In particular, P. viridis grew as well at $33^{\circ}C$ as it did at $29^{\circ}C$. However, P. lutheri and Pavlova sp. did not grow at $33^{\circ}C$. In terms of fatty acids, P. viridis cultured at $33^{\circ}C$ also exhibited higher contents of PUFA and n-3 HUFA, as compared to P. gyrans. Based on these results, we suggest that I. galbana (KMMCC12) and P. viridis are suitable species for mass culture during the high temperature season.

  • GC/MS has been utilized for many applications due to great resolution and reproducibility, which made it possible to build up the database of mass spectrum, while HS-SPME has the advantage of solventfree extraction of volatile compounds. The combination of these two methods, HS-SPME GC/MS, enabled many scientific applications with various possibilities. In this study, the analysis of trail pheromone excreted from live Camponotus japonicus with the feature of solvent-free extraction was carried out and the optimization for this analysis was performed. The major compounds detected were n-decane, n-undecane, and n-tridecane. Optimization for the best detection of these hydrocarbons was processed in the point of SPME parameter (selection of fiber, extraction temperature, extraction time, etc.). The advantage of the analysis of live sample is to analyze phenomenon right after it is excreted by ants. But the experimental process has restriction of extraction temperature and time because of the analysis of live ants. Establishing the process of HS-SPME GC/MS applied to live samples shown in this study can be a breakthrough for the ecofriendly and ethical research of live things.

  • Osteoporosis is a disease that occurs mainly in the elderly and increases the risk of fractures due to structural deterioration of bone mass and tissues. The purpose of this study are to assess the relationship between nutritional components and osteoporosis and to evaluate models for predicting osteoporosis based on nutrient components. In experimental method, association was performed using binary logistic regression, and predictive models were generated using the naive Bayes algorithm and variable subset selection methods. The analysis results for single variables indicated that food intake and vitamin B2 showed the highest value of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for predicting osteoporosis in men. In women, monounsaturated fatty acids showed the highest AUC value. In prediction model of female osteoporosis, the models generated by the correlation based feature subset and wrapper based variable subset methods showed an AUC value of 0.662. In men, the model by the full variable obtained an AUC of 0.626, and in other male models, the predictive performance was very low in sensitivity and 1-specificity. The results of these studies are expected to be used as the basic information for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

  • The seismic slope stability is most often evaluated by the pseudo-static limit analysis, in which the earthquake loading is simplified as static inertial loads acting in horizontal and/or vertical directions. The transient loading is represented by constant acceleration via the pseudostatic coefficients. The result of a pseudostatic analysis is governed by the selection of the value of the pseudostatic coefficient. However, selection of the value is very difficult and often done in an ad hoc manner without a sound physical reasoning. In addition, the maximum acceleration is commonly estimated from the design guideline, which cannot accurately estimate the dynamic response of a slope. There is a need to perform a 2D dynamic analysis to properly define the dynamic response characteristics. This paper develops a new hybrid pseudostatic method that links the modified one-dimensional seismic site response analysis and the pseudostatic algorithm. The modified site response analysis adjusts the density of the layers to simulate the change in mass and weight of the layers of the slope with depth. Multiple analyses were performed at various locations within the slope to estimate the change in seismic response of the slope. The calculated peak acceleration profiles with depth from the developed procedure were compared to those by the two-dimensional analyses. Comparisons show that the two methods result in remarkable match. The calculated profiles are used to perform pseudostatic analysis. The results show that use of peak or a fraction of acceleration at the surface can seriously underestimate or overestimate the factor of safety, and that the proposed procedure significantly enhances the reliability of a standard procedure.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the weight loss effects of auricular acupuncture in obese patients. Methods: Six databases (Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Korean studies Information Service System [KISS], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], PubMed, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI]) were searched up to May 20, 2020. Eight eligible randomized controlled trials were included the present study. The quality of included studies was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool and a meta-analysis was performed by Review Manager software. A meta-analysis was conducted using a random-effects model and a subgroup analysis was performed to detect the sources of heterogeneity, identify the selection of acupuncture methods and explore its contributions to the weight loss effects. Results: Among 8 trials, 5 trials used auricular acupuncture and 2 trials used auricular acupressure, 1 trial used both types of intervention. Most commonly selected acupoints were Shenmen (TF4) and stomach (CO4). Treatment duration was six to twelve weeks, and total treatment session was six to twelve. Compared to the control groups, auricular acupuncture significantly decreased body weight, body mass index (BMI), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL) and ghrelin. For the selection of acupuncture methods, both methods performed similarly in most outcome except waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage (BFP), and triglycerides (TG). Conclusions: We found that auricular acupuncture can be effective for weight loss and controlling appetite. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to heterogeneity. So further vigorous and well-designed studies should be conducted to strengthen the evidence of the use of auricular acupuncture for obesity.

  • In this study, the satellite images and the GIS technique are used to select the basin characteristics parameters as the basis of water resources management of river basin. The study area is Geum-ho river basin and the hydrologic characteristics data are computed through the database of the basin characteristics parameters classified by subjects with 35 maps correspond to the study basin of 1:25,000 scale as the basic map. As the result, the drawing up of land use map through satellite image processing that provides the quantitative informations for the land is very efficient to analysis the extensive land use information of the basin, and exact analysis of mass surface data is possible and the feasibility of statistic computation between spatial subjects as it superpose on other subject map is ascertained. It is thought also that the analysis of the basin characteristics data can be utilized very effectively for the basin management and the analysis of basin surface area, once it is expressed numerically for database, since the superposition analysis with different subject map and the correlative analysis with the property data are possible although the tracing process of each subject in the basic map is not efficient. Especially, modification and renewal of the data for the change of land surface become easy, therefore more rapid and exact selection of the basin characteristics data and the construction of more efficient basin management plan are possible.

  • A total of 31 C. chinense lines selected from 2000 screening were tested again for resistance to P. capsid but resistance was not found in tile lines. A total of 26 selections from Korean land races tested 2001 spring were tested again for resistance to P. capsici, KC180, KC230, KC195 and KC194 showed moderate resistance to P. capsid. However, it was apparent on the basis of horticultural characteristics that KC180 and KC230 had been naturally crossed with AC2258 and CM334, respectively. CM334 and AC2248 seed lots that were increased in different years were taken out and tested for resistance to improve their genetic purity because the resistant genetic resources have been showing some off-types in tile population. Off-types began to be found in 1992 seed lots and tile proportion and degree of tile offs was increasing with time up to 2001. Plants true to the type in 1992 seed lots were selected and their inbred seeds were mass produced in a net cage in the greenhouse. AC2258 included in the experiment together was uniform. In 1995 seed lots of CM334, plants with resistance to P. capsici and low or no number of lateral branching at cotyledonary axil, although they were off from tile original CM334, were found and selection was applied to breed lines fixed in tile characters.
