  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to review the randomized clinical trials of Chuna manual therapy for cervicogenic headache and provide a evidence for the efficacy of Chuna manual therapy. Methods : We searched randomized clinical trials that performed Chuna manual therapy for cervical headache up to Feb. 2017 in 6 databases. Randomized clinical trials were selected according to the inclusion criteria and the data were extracted and analyzed. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Criteria. Results : 16 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of 13 RCTs showed favorable results for the use of chuna manual therapy compared to drug, physical treatment. Conclusions : In 16 RCTs, we found that Chuna manual therapy was effective in cervicogenic headache. However, all RCTs are exposed to a number of bias risks. Therefore, well designed clinical trial would be needed to raise the evidence level of Chuna manual therapy.

  • Objectives: To evaluate and summarize the efficacy and safety of manual therapy in temporomandibular disorder(TMD). Methods: Ten databases (Pubmed, Cochrane, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, CNKI, and four Korean databases) were searched up to March 2017. Pain and range of motion(ROM) of temporomandibular joint were used as the primary outcome measure, and effective rates, dysfunction scale and adverse events were used as secondary outcome measures. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality. Results: 10 randomized controlled trials(RCTs) involving 603 participants were included. There were no significant differences between the two groups in comparison with placebo manual therapy group. In comparison with Wait-list and conventional treatment groups, manual therapy significantly alleviated pain and ROM. Five RCTs(50.0%) reported adverse events and there were no adverse cases by manual therapy. Conclusions: We found evidence that manual therapy may alleviate symptoms of patients with TMD. A positive effect was observed in comparison with conventional treatment and Wait-list, but no conclusion for the comparisons with placebo manual therapy. There is no evidence of worsening symptoms or causing adverse events.

  • The Manual for Buddhist Rituals (1935) is the manual of Buddhist rituals which has a pivotal position in terms of the modernization of Korean Buddhist rituals. The text has been established through the contents and systems of the two texts, The Manual for Practising Rituals (作法龜鑑, 1827) and the Compulsory Manual for Buddhists (佛子必覽, 1931). These three manuals include the examples for practising the Manuals. The analysis of the examples for the practices of the three texts is as follows: The Manual for Practising Rituals tries to include the Sounds of the Music for the Buddhist Rituals through the Four Sounds (四聲) and the Twin words (儷語); the marks of the sounds are excluded after the compulsory Manual for Buddhists. The Manual for Buddhist Rituals has replaced the rituals for repentance (三寶通請) with the rituals for revering (四聖禮): and this text has made it easier that people participate in Buddhist rituals with the text which is written in bilingual format in Korean and Classic Chinese. The text has been popularized through above-mentioned changes against the previous two texts but it has ended up excluding the practices for the music of Korean Buddhism such as the music for Buddhist rituals (梵唄) and reciting the name of Buddhas (念佛).

  • Background: Manual traction with a belt is a physiotherapy treatment method that reduces disk pressure and widens the disk space. In clinical settings, it is applied to numerous patients with herniated intervertebral disk (HIVD). This study aimed to identify the effects of manual traction with a belt on the intervertebral space in patients with lumbar HIVDs. Methods: The intervention was performed on 17 patients with lumbar HIVDs who were divided into two groups: one with eight patients having HIVD at L4~L5 and another group with nine patients having HIVD at L5~S1. The participants received manual traction with a belt twice a week for 12 weeks, and radiographic imaging was used to visualize the intervertebral space and compare it before and after treatment. Results: Manual traction with a belt increased the lumbar intervertebral space at L4~L5 and L5~S1 in patients with L4~L5 HIVD. A significant difference was observed in the L4-L5 distance (p<.01); however, no significant difference was observed in the L5~S1 distance (p>.05). The intervertebral space significantly increased at both L4~L5 and L5~S1 in patients with L5~S1 HIVD (p<.05). Conclusion: Thus, manual traction with a belt increased the intervertebral space in patients with L4~L5 and L5~S1 HIVDs. These results are expected to guide studies on manual traction with belts in clinical settings in the future. Further studies using the present research as an objective study method are anticipated.

  • Objectives This study aimed to the application of Chuna manual therapy in patients with stroke where much evidence is not available. Methods Domestic databases (KOREANTK, OASIS, RISS, KISS, and KMBASE) were queried for literature showing application of Chuna manual therapy in stroke patients. Additionally, insufficient evidence was supplemented with expert consensus using the Delphi method. Based on the literature review and expert consensus, the academic committee of the Korean Society of Chuna Manual Medicine reviewed and summarized the Chuna technique recommendations that can be applied to stroke patients. Results There were six studies on Chuna manual therapy in stroke patients, and Chuna therapy was applied for pelvic, shoulder, and elbow joint spasticity. The expert Delphi survey did not agree with the application of the nine of the 69 standard Chuna techniques and deliberated on matters to be considered when applying Chuna manual therapy to stroke patients. Finally, based on clinical research literature and expert opinions, Chuna technique was recommended for patients with post-stroke spasticity. Conclusions The application of Chuna therapy to non-muscular skeletal disorders, including stroke is recommended and should be applied while taking the necessary precautions.

  • Objectives : In our previous study, we developed the prototype of a lesson plan for meridian and acupuncture clinical skills education by applying the rapid prototyping to instructional systems design. The present study aimed to develop a teaching-learning manual, including the lesson plans, practice notes, and instructions for devices. We also aimed to present a guideline on how to use the manual in class. Methods : The manual and materials for teachers and learners were developed based on the solutions and the prototype derived from our previous study. Practical classes on meridian and acupuncture points consist of four major subjects, and the lesson plan and practice note were designed according to each topic. Results : Flipped learning, George's five-step method, peer role-play, and peer-led objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) were applied as main methodologies in the meridian and acupuncture points practical class. The teaching-learning manual, including practice notes, detailed lesson plan, OSCE checklist, and instruction manual for devices, was developed to be utilized at each stage of the learning activity. Conclusions : The application of the teaching-learning manual is expected to provide effective clinical skills education, strengthen learners' communication skills, establish professional identity, assess learners' performance, and provide immediate feedback. The educational effect of the manual for the existing class should be identified, and its feasibility should be verified by implementing it on another group. This manual could be helpful in designing classes for other subjects of Korean medicine, especially for clinical skills education.

  • Program similarity analysis consists of substantial similarity and access. Substantial similarity is a judgment of how similarly the program source code is quantitatively. Access determines the degree of similarity by analyzing comments in the program or other contextual evidence. In the case of manuals, it may be the subject of legitimacy analysis. Manuals can be divided into three types as follows. First, a master manual is a document created during the development stage of a product. It is a user manual that contains all the functionality of the product and its derivatives. Second, the customer manual is a manual that is open only to the primary customer and orderer. Third, the user manual is a document that is applied to the final OEM production stage and is open to the end purchaser. In this paper, we compare the master manual seized from the suspect and the master manual provided by the suspect on the Internet. It then determines how similar this master manual is and includes the victim company's original and property values.
