The purposes of this research were to segment consumer groups according to sportswear benefits sought and to find the differences among the groups in regard to domestic vs imported brand attitudes, internet vs department store attitudes, and sportswear purchasing behavior. The subjects used for the research were 773 male and female consumers who were residents in Seoul. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan test. The results showed that there were four sportswear benefit segments: figure compensation/ ostentation, individuality, comfort/function, and youth-oriented groups. Statistical analyses showed that the four sportswear benefit segments were different in regard to imported brand attitudes, department store attitudes, and sportswear purchasing behavior. For example, figure compensation/ ostentation segment had more positive attitude toward imported brands and department stores, considered design and advertisement important as sportswear selection criteria, and had a highest expenditure on sportswear purchase. The implications of the research were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to identify (1) consumers' energy conservation attitude and behavior and (2) response to the energy conservation policies. For this purpose 1,200 male and female consumers who residents of 6 cities (Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju. Taejoen, and Inchon) were surveyed through the standardized questionnares. The major findings were as follows; (1) The level of energy conservation attitude was relatively high and differed significantly according to sex, age, and education, (2) The level of energy conservation behavior was differed significantly according to sex, age, and education. (3) The energy conservation policies which provide consumers with energy saving information and education were more preferred. (4) There energy conservation attitude had the strongest effect on the energy conservation behavior.
The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the level of environmentally conscious consumer behavior and support on the environmental regulation, and (2) to identify the influencing variables and causal relationship. Data were collected from questionnares with 1050 male and female consumers who were in the age of 20∼49 and residents of 6 cities(Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju, Taejoen, Inchon). The major findings were as follows: (1) The level of environmentally conscious behavior was relatively high and differed significantly according to sex, age, education and marital status. (2) The level of support on the environmental regulation measures, consumers' support on the company regulation measures was most strong. (4) Sex, age, marital status, environment awareness and environmentally conscious behavior had positive effects on consumers' support on the environmental regulation directly and indirectly.
We used the health screening data of some rural and urban residents to examine the cross-sectional association between leukocyte count and hypertension. The 206 male and 203 female rural residents were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling method in Kyungsan-Kun area of Kyungbuk province in 1985 and 600 urban residents were selected by the same sampling method as the rural residents in Daegu city of the same province in 1986 compatible with age-sex distribution of Daegu city of 1985 census, but of whom 384 actually responded. The rest of 600 were replaced by age and sex with those who were members of the medical insurance plan visiting the health management department of the university hospital to get the biannual preventive medical checkups. Excluded in the analysis were those having hypertensive history, diseases and extreme outlying values of the screening tests, leaving 373 rural and 571 urban residents. Leukocyte count was measured with ELT-8 Laser shadow method and the unit $cells/mm^3$, Blood pressures were determined with an aneroid sphygmomanometer with pre-standardized method and hypertensives were defined as those showing systolic blood pressure more than 140mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure more than 90mmHg. Total residents pooled (N=944) showed a significant difference between hypertensives and normotensives ($6965.93{\pm}1997.01\;vs\;6490.61{\pm}1941.32,\;P=0.00$) and in rural residents was noted the similar significant difference (P=0.03). None of significant differences were noted in any stratum stratified by residency and sex. Compared to the lowest quintile of WBC, 2/5 quintile showed odds ratio 0.99 (95% Confidence interval, Ci 0.62-1.59), 3/5 quintile 1.41 (95% CI 0.90-2.21), 4/5 quintile 1.76 (95% CI. 1.14-2.72), and highest quintile 1.80 (1.15-2.82) in the total residents. Likelihood ratio test for linear trend for it indicated a significant trend ($X^2_{trend}=5.53,\;df=1,\;P<0.05$). There were no other significant odds ratios compared to the lowest quintile of WBC in strata stratified by residency and sex. The odds ratios in total residents which had showed significant odds ratios became nonsignificant and of reduced magnitude after controlling age, frequency of smoking and drinking with multiple logistic. regression. In each stratum, it changed magnitudes of odds ratios slightly and unstably. None of the trend tests showed any significant trend. These results suggest that the Friedman et al's finding of association between leukocyte count and hypertension may be due to an statistical type I error resulting from the data dredging in an exploratory study, in which more than 800 variables were screened as possible predictors of hypertension.

The purpose of this study was through a survey of awareness of cancer and cancer screening of Korean community residents to identify the stereotypes of cancer and bases for development of improved screening programs for early detection. Subjects were residing in South Korea Gangwon-Province and were over 30 years and under 69 years old. The total was 2,700 persons which underwent structured telephone survey questionnaires considered with specific rates of gender, region, and age. For statistical analysis, PASW Statistics 17.0 WIN was utilized. Frequency analysis, the Chi-square (${\chi}^2$) test for univariate analysis, and logistic regression analysis were performed. The awareness of cancer and cancer screening in subjects differed by gender, region and age. For the idea of cancer, women thought about death less than men (OR: 0.73, p<0.001). On the other hand, women had negative thoughts - fear/terror/suffering/pain/pain - more than their male counterparts (OR: 2.04, p<0.001). Next, for the idea of cancer screening, women recognized fear/terror more than men (OR: 1.38, p<0.01). The higher age, the more tension/anxiety/worry/burden/irritated/pressure (OR: 1.43, p<0.01, OR: 2.15, p<0.001, OR: 2.49, p<0.001)). People may be reminded of fear and death for cancer and of fear, terror, tension and anxiety for cancer screening. To change vague fear and negative attitudes of cancer could increase the rate of cancer screening as well as help to improve the quality of life for community cancer survivors and facilitate return to normal social life. Therefore, it is necessary to provide promotion and education to improve the awareness of cancer and cancer screening.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the staffs' attitudes and opinions toward psychiatry in a hospital. The results of the investigation were taken as a basic data of the education programs of persons who worked in a hospital and community residents. Methods : The subjects of this study were persons who worked in a hospital. The tool used in this study was Attitudes and Opinions toward Psychiatry. Sixty-one persons were studied. Statistically one-way ANOVA or t-test were used. Results : Internal consistency was high, measuring 0.80 for the 26 items. Generally, hospital staffs have positive attitude toward psychiatry. Direct patient contact group scored more higher than indirect contact group, except 'overall merits of the field of psychiatry' and 'efficacy' factor. In factor 'overall merits of the field of psychiatry', and factor 'efficacy' female scored more higher than male averagely. In factor 'role definition and functioning of psychiatrists', 'possible abuses and social criticisms', and 'career and personal reward', direct patient contact group scored more higher than indirect contact group averagely. Conclusion This study results support the hypothesis that the direct patient contact group have more positive attitude toward psychiatry than the other group. It will be necessary to educate for a psychiatric hospital staffs and community residents on psychiatry.
A survey was conducted to investigate the preferences of wedding reception food, food consumption and its nutrient density, and the factors that influence nutrient density, in order to obtain baseline data for the development of an educational program on dining out. Subjects included 105 male and female adults who attended a wedding ceremony and consumed wedding reception food in the Chungbuk area between August and September 2004 and interviewed using a questionnaire. 63.0% of the subjects responded that they over-ate at the reception. 20.5% reported that they skipped the meal before the reception. The respondents who skipped the meal had more calorie intakes (899kcal) than those who did not (800kcal). In food preferences, noodles (51.0%), watermelon (47.0%), rice cake (39.0%), sweet and sour pork (38.0%), potato noodles stir-fried with vegetables (37.0%), beef rib soup with cooked rice (37.0%), bulgogi (35.0%), braised beef ribs (35.0%), fried shrimp (32.0%) were higher percentages in order. People preferred grain, meat and fatty food to vegetables. Total calorie intake from the reception foods were 881 kcal for males, and 769kcal for females. In evaluation of nutrient density, the density of calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fiber did not meet the standard of the recommended intake. Especially, vitamin C and dietary fiber were less than 50% of the recommended level. The main factors that influence the nutrient density were household incomes, occupations, marital status, and total fat consumed. In conclusion, an educational program should be developed and offered to improve their dietary quality.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among the health concern, health practice and health status of Koreans. This study utilized the data from Korean National Health Survey (KNHS) in 1992. The data consisted of random sample of 2,799 individuals (1,304 male and 1,495 females) whose ages were between 20 and 59. The data were analyzed using SAS version 6.04 and LISREL version 7.13. The analytic methods for the study were chi-square analysis and covariance structural analysis. The results of the study were as follows. (1) There were significant positive relationships between health concern level and health practice index, and between health practice index and self-perceived health status. (2) There were negative relationships between practice index and chronic illness, and between health practice index and acute illness only in female. (3) Based on the findings, the structural model of the health concern, health practice, health status and socioeconomic variables was established and then the covariance structural analysis was used. The higher educational level and economic status were, the higher the health concern was. And urban residents were much more concerned with their health than rural residents. The more persons were concerned with health, the more they did health practices. And the more the health practice was, the higher the health status was. The younger the persons were and the higher the health status of one's family was, the higher the health status was. In female, the higher the economic status was, the higher the health status was.

This study examined the awareness levels of stroke warning symptoms and the related factors among residents in a province and this paper presents the evidence for education and promotion strategies. The study subjects were 585 adults living in a province. The demographic factors and awareness levels of stroke symptoms were surveyed through a telephone interview. In the survey, the most frequently recognized warning symptoms were 'sudden speech disturbance (84.6%)', and 'sudden weakness of one side (73.9%)'. On the other hand, 'sudden dizziness (67.0%)', 'sudden visual impairment (55.4%)' and 'sudden severe headache (51.3%)' were less recognized. In a multiple regression analysis, male, young age, no familial history of stroke, no acquaintance history of stroke, low educational level, no exposure to promotional literature were significantly related to a low awareness level of the stroke warning symptoms. Providing customized programs will be helpful for enhancing the efficiency of promotion and education to the population with a low awareness level of stroke symptoms.
