In this paper, a new opposition based charged system search (CSS) is proposed to be used as a parameter identification of highly nonlinear semi-active magneto-rheological damper. By replacing the opposition particles with current solutions, the mentioned strategy is used to enhance the search space and to increase the exploration of CSS. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a nonlinear modified Bouc-Wen model of MR damper is considered to find its parameters, and compare it with those achieved from experimental model of MR damper. Also, by exploiting the sensitivity analysis and using the importance vector, the less importance parameters in the Bouc-Wen model are eliminated which makes the MR damper model simpler. Results demonstrate the new proposed algorithm (OBLCSS) has a high ability to tackle highly nonlinear problems. Based on the results of the α importance vector, a simplified model is proposed and its parameters are identified by using the presented OBLCSS algorithm. The simplified proposed model also has a high capability of estimating damper responses.

In general, lateral ride comfort of railway vehicle is mainly influenced by a secondary suspension placed between the bogie and carbody. Higher operating speeds of train results in increased vibration of carbody, which has a negative impact related to the ride comfort. To solve this problem, researches to replace the conventional passive suspension with (semi)active technology in the secondary suspension of a railway vehicle have been carried out. The semi-active suspension using the magneto-rheological damper is relatively simpler system and has advantage in maintenance compared to the hydraulic type semi-active damper. This study was performed to reduce lateral vibration acceleration of carbody related to ride comfort of railway vehicles with a semi-active suspension system. The numerical analysis was conducted by replacing passive lateral damper with semi-active MR damper, and robust control with the MR damper was applied to the 1/5 scaled railway vehicle model.

In this paper, a modified sensitivity control for the semi-active suspension system with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper is investigated. A 2-d.o.f quarter-car model together with a 6th order polynomial model for the MR damper is considered. For the purpose of suppressing the vertical acceleration of the sprung mass, the square of the vertical acceleration is defined as a cost function and a modified sensitivity control that updates the current input in the negative gradient of the cost function is proposed. The implementation of the proposed algorithm requires only the measurement of the relative displacement of the suspension deflection. The local stability of equilibria of the closed loop nonlinear system is proved by investigating the eigenvalues of the linearized ones. Through simulations, the passive suspension, the skyhook control, and the proposed modified sensitivity control are compared.

This paper proposes a hydraulic circuit for a Magnetorheological (MR) damper that can be used for semi-active and active controls. Methods are presented for obtaining reliable damping force displacement and velocity data, and hysteresis loop data corresponding to applied current. In order to get reliable data, analysis using electric and electronic software, a series of tests. and comparative evaluations are required. A hydraulic circuit model is proposed that can be applied to analyze a MR damper without any assumptions where the yield stress data according to the applied current are known. Analysis results of the proposed hydraulic circuit are confirmed by experimental results within acceptable tolerance. This hydraulic circuit model can be applied to various MR dampers and systems.

In this study magneto-rheological damper, a kind of semi-active device, is used to reduce the response of pier and girder of bridge structure subjected to seismic excitation and as a effective semi-active control method fuzzy control technique considering nonlinear behavior of the damper dynamics. By Numerical simulations of a nine span continuous bridge system subjected to various earthquakes, fuzzy control technique is compared with existing clipped optimal control technique in control performance which reduces displacement of pier and girder simultaneously. In the comparison of the control performance within a control force limit, it is confirmed that presented fuzzy control technique more efficiently reduce the pier and girder displacement than clipped optimal control technique based on optimal control theory.

Many researchers have attempted to apply semi-active control systems in the civil engineering structures. Recently, magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been developed. This MR damper is one of semi-active dampers as a new class of smart dampers. This paper discusses the application of MR damper for seismic response control of adjacent buildings subjected to earthquake. Here, a controllable damping force of MR damper that is installed between adjacent buildings is applied to seismic response control. A hybrid model combines skyhook and groundhook control algorithm so that the benefits of each can be combined together. In this paper, hybrid control model are applied to the multi degree of freedom system representative of buildings in order to reduce seismic response of adjacent buildings. And the performance of hybrid control model is compared with that of others. It was demonstrated that hybrid control model or adjacent buildings with MR damper was effective for seismic response control of two adjacent buildings reciprocally.

This work presents a comparative work on the ride comfort of a quarter car suspension system between two different magneto-rheological (MR) dampers; one is conventional type without bypass hole and the other is featured by several bypass holes in the piston. As a first step, two different MR dampers are designed on the basis of the governing equation and manufactured with same geometric dimensions except the bypass holes. After investigating the field-dependent damping properties, two dampers are installed to the quarter car suspension system. The suspension model is then derived and a sky-hook controller is implemented to identify vibration control performance under random road. It is shown that the suspension system with MR damper featured by the bypass holes can provide much better ride quality than the case without the bypass holes. This is validated via experimental implementation.
Adequate postural control depends on the spatial and temporal integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory information. Especially, the musculoskeletal function is essential to maintain the postural control. The experimental studies was performed on the muscular activities in the lower extremities during maintaining and moving exercises on an unstable platform with Magneto Rheological(MR) dampers. The unstable platform of the developed system was controlled by electric currents to the MR dampers. A subject executed the maintaining and moving exercises which are presented through the display monitor. The electromyographies of the eight muscles in lower extremities were recorded and analyzed in the time and the frequency domain: the muscles of interest were rectus femoris(RF), biceps femoris(BF), tensor fasciae latae(TFL), vastus lateralis(VL), vastus medialis(VM), gastrocnemius(Ga), tibialis anterior(TA), Soleus(So). The experimental results showed that the muscular activities differed in the four moving exercises and the nine maintaining exercises. For the anterior-posterior pattern, the TA showed highest activities; for the left-right pattern, the TFL; for the 45, $-45^{\circ}$ pattern, the TFL and TA. Also, the rate of the increase in the muscular activities were affected by the condition of the unstable platform with MR dampers for the maintaining and moving exercises. The experimental results suggest that the choice of different maintaining and moving exercises could selectively train different muscles in various intensity. Futhermore, the findings suggested that the training using this system can improve the ability of postural control.
This paper reported test of full-scale cables attached with four types of dampers: viscous damper, passive Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper, friction damper and High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper. The logarithmic decrements of the cable with attached dampers were calculated from free vibration time history. The efficiency ratios of the mean damping ratios of the tested four dampers to theoretical maximum damping ratio were derived, which was very important for practical damper design and parameter optimization. Non-ideal factors affecting damper performance were discussed based on the test results. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness were discussed in detail and compared theoretically. Approximate formulations were derived and verified using numerical solutions. The critical values for non-dimensional concentrated mass coefficient and negative stiffness were identified. Efficiency ratios were approximately 0.6, 0.6, and 0.3 for the viscous damper, passive MR damper and HDR damper, respectively. The efficiency ratio for the friction damper was between 0-1.0. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness on cable damping were positive as both could increase damping ratio; the concentrated mass was more effective than negative stiffness for higher vibration modes.
