  • In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by two low speed impinging jets was measured by the direct contact method. The effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity on the thickness were analyzed and the results were compared with theoretical modeling and optical thickness measurement results. The liquid film thickness decreased as the radius and circumferential angle increased. The jet velocity did not affect the liquid film thickness as predicted in theoretical modeling. In the theoretical modeling, there was no influence of the fluid properties on thickness, but in the case of low viscosity liquids, the thickness was predicted high, and it was well matched in high viscosity liquids. The direct measurement results showed no significant difference from the optical measurement results, thus confirming the reliability of the optical measurement method.

  • In the mountain streams in Jeju Island, strong turbulence and roughness usually made it nearly impossible to utilize most of intrusive instrumentation for streamflow discharge measurements. Instead, a non-intrusive fixed electro-magnetic wave surface velocimetry (fixed EWSV: Kalesto) became alternatively popular in many representative streams to measure stream discharge seamlessly. Currently, Kalesto has shown noteworthy performance with little loss in flood discharge measurements and also has successfully provided discharge for every minute. However, Kalesto has been operated to regard its measured one-point velocity as the representative mean velocity for the given cross-section. Therefore, it could be highly possible to potentially encompass discharge measurements errors. In this study, we analyzed the difference between such Kalesto discharge measurements and other alternative concurrent discharge measurements such as Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and mobile EWSV which were able to measure velocity in multi-points in the cross-section. Consequently, Kalesto discharge deviated from ADCP discharge in amount of 48% for relatively low flow, and more than 20% difference for high flow compared with mobile EWSV discharge measurements. These results indicated that the one-point velocity measured by Kalesto should be used as a cross-sectional mean velocity, rather it should be accounted for as an index-velocity in conjunction with directly measured cross-sectional mean velocity by using more reliable instrumentations. After inducing Kalesto Discharge Correction Coefficient (KDCC) that actually means relationship between index velocity and cross-sectional mean velocity, the corrected discharge from Kalesto was significantly improved. Therefore, we found that index velocity method should be applied to obtain better accuracy of discharge measurement in case of Kalesto operation.

  • The piezoelectric thin film(PVDF: polyvinylidene fluoride) sensors having good dynamic sensing charachteristics can be used to monitor low vwlocit impact on composite structures. The impact response function for composite sandwich beam was derved. The impact tests at low energy without inducing damage were performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The measured signals of PVDF sensors attached on the surface of the beam agreed well with the simulated signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces from the PVDF sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces showed good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to monitor the low velocity impact on composite sandwich structures.

  • In this paper, we design a navigation filter for an underwater glider. Underwater gliders are low-cost, reusable, and can be used for a long time. Two types of filters are designed considering characteristics such as small size, low cost, and low power. The navigation filter estimates the reference velocity of the underwater glider's body frame based on the minimum sensor output. The sensor configuration of the first filter consists of an accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a depth sensor. the second filter include extra a gyroscope in the same configuration. The estimated velocity is fused with the attitude, converted into the velocity of the navigation frame and finally the position is estimated. To analyze the performance of the proposed filter, analysis was performed using Monte Carlo numerical analysis method, and the results were analyzed with standard deviation (1σ). Standard deviations of each filter's position error are 334.34m, 125.91m.

  • We present a 3D SH-wave velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle and seismic radial anisotropy beneath East Asia. The SH-wave velocity structure model was built using Love-wave group-velocity dispersion data from earthquake data recorded at broadband seismic networks of Korea, Japan, and China. Love-wave group-velocity dispersion curves were obtained by using the multiple filtering technique in the period range of 3 to 150 s for 3,369 event-station pairs. The inverted model using these data sets provides a crust and upper mantle SH-wave velocity structure down to 100 km depth. At 10 ~ 40 km depths SH-wave velocity beneath the East Sea is higher than beneath the Japanese island region. We estimated the Moho beneath the East Sea to be between 10 ~ 20 km depth, while Moho beneath the Korean Peninsula at around 35 km based on the depth where high-velocity anomalies are detected. We estimated the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary beneath the East Sea to be at around 50 km based on the depth where strong low-velocity anomalies are observed. Widespread low-velocity anomalies are found between 50 ~ 100 km depth in the study region. Positive radial anisotropy ($V_{SV}$ > $V _{SH}$) is observed down to 35 km depth, while negative radial anisotropy ($V_{SV}$ > $V _{SH}$) is observed for deeper depth.

  • The effect of micro scale turbulence on flame structure and stability were experimentally investigated by changing the area of micro turbulence generator(MTG) and air velocity in terms of low NOx and high efficiency combustion. NOx and CO concentration were also measured for different MTG areas to investigate whether a vane swirler having MTG has a possibility of using as part for low NOx combustor. From the obtained results, it is shown that flame stability region increases and flame size becomes small as MTG area increases since MTG in itself makes small scale recirculation flow and swirler does large scale recirculation one. It is also shown that low NOx concentration(about 20${\sim}$30ppm@$O_2$ 11%) is achieved for all MTG areas without any increase in CO concentration regardless of air velocity range tested in this study when the equivalence ratio is 0.7. The results obtained in this study can give basic guideline for the design of compact low NOx high efficiency combustor using a vane swirler having MTG.

  • Three HF ocean radar stations were installed at the Soya/La Perouse Strait in the Sea of Okhotsk in order to monitor the Soya Warm Current. The frequency of the HF radar is 13.9 MHz, and the range and azimuth resolutions are 3 km and $5^{\circ}$, respectively. The radar covers a range of approximately 70 km from the coast. It is shown that the HF radars clearly capture seasonal and short-term variations of the Soya Warm Current. The velocity of the Soya Warm Current reaches its maximum, approximately 1 m $s^{-1}$, in summer, and weakens in winter. The velocity core is located 20 to 30 km from the coast, and its width is approximately 50 km. The surface transport by the Soya Warm Current shows a significant correlation with the sea level difference along the strait, as derived from coastal tide gauge records. The cross-current sea level difference, which is estimated from the sea level anomalies observed by the Jason-1 altimeter and a coastal tide gauge, also exhibits variation in concert with the surface transport and along-current sea level difference.

  • Atmospheric low-temperature plasma was produced using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plate-type plasma reactor and high frequency of 13.56 Hz. The surfaces of polyimide films for insulating and packaging materials were treated by the atmospheric low-temperature plasma. The contact angle of 67$^{\circ}$ was observed before the plasma treatment. The contact angle was decreased with deceasing the velocity of plasma treatment. In case of oxygen content of 0.2 %, electrode gap of 2 mm, the velocity of plasma treatment of 20 mm/sec, and input power of 400 W, the minimum contact angle of 13$^{\circ}$ was observed. The chemical characteristics of polyimide film after the plama treatment were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and new carboxyl group bond was observed. The surfaces of polyimide films were changed into hydrophilic by the atmospheric low-temperature plasma. The polyimide films having hydrophilic surface will be very useful as a packaging and insulating materials in electronic devices.

  • In the very low specific speed range ($n_s=0.24$ < 0.25, non-dimensional), the efficiency of centrifugal pump designed by a conventional method is very low in common. Therefore, positive-displacement pumps have long been used widely. Recently, since the centrifugal pumps are becoming higher in rotational speed and smaller in size, there expects to develop a new centrifugal pump with a high performance to replace the positive-displacement pumps. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal flow characteristics of a very low specific speed centrifugal pump and to examine the effect of internal flow pattern on pump performance. The results show that the theoretical head definition of semi-open impeller should be revised by the consideration of high slip factor in the semi-open impeller, and the leakage flow through the tip clearance results in a large effect on the impeller internal flow. Strong reverse flow at the outlet of semi-open impeller reduces the absolute tangential velocity considerably, and the decreased absolute tangential velocity increasese the slip factor with the reduction of theoretical head.

  • This present paper leads to investigation of blade-fluid interactions of cambered blade H-Darrieus rotor having EN0005 airfoil blades using comprehensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to understand its performance in low wind streams. For several blade azimuthal angle positions, the effects of three different low wind speeds are studied regarding their influence on the blade-fluid interactions of the EN0005 blade rotor. In the prevailing studies by various researchers, such CFD analysis of H-Darrieus rotors are very less, hence it is needed to improve their steady-state performance in low wind velocities. Such a study is also important to obtain important performance insights of such thin cambered blade rotor in its complete rotational cycle. It has been seen that the vortex generated at the suction side of the EN0005 blade rolls back to its leading edge due to the camber of the blade and thus a peak velocity occurs near to the nose position of this blade at its leading edge, which leads to peak performance of this rotor. Again, in the returning phase of the blade, a secondary recirculating vortex is generated that acts on the pressure side of EN0005 blade rotor that increases the performance of this cambered EN0005 blade rotor in its downstream position as well. Here, the aerodynamic performances have been compared considering Standard k-ε and SST k-ω models to check the better suited turbulence model for the cambered EN0005 blade H-Darrieus rotor in low tip speed ratios.
