  • In this paper, we extracted the contour of lung parenchyma on EBT images with the improved active contour model. The objects boundary in conventional active contour model can be extracted by controlling internal energy and external energy as energy minimizing form. However, there are a number of problems such as initialization and the poor convergence about concave part. Expecially, contour can not enter the concave region by discouraging characteristic about stretching and bending in internal energy. We controlled internal energy by moving local perpendicular bisector point of each control point in the contour and implemented the object boundary by minimizing energy with external energy The convergence of concave part could be efficiently implemented toward lung parenchyma region by this internal energy and both lung images for initial contour could also be detected by multi-detection method. We were sure this method could be applied detection of lung parenchyma region in medical image.

  • For stiffened plates composed of composite materials, many researchers have used a finite element method which connected isoparametric plate elements and beam elements. However, the finite element method is difficult to reflect local behavior of stiffener because beam elements are transferred stiffness for nodal point of plate elements, especially the application is limited in case of laminated composite structures. In this paper, for analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates, 3D shell elements for stiffener and plate are employed. Reissner-Mindlin's first order shear deformation theory is considered in this study. But when thickness will be thin, isoparamatric plate bending element based on the theory of Reissner-Mindlin is generated by transverse shear locking. To eliminate the shear locking and virtual zero energy mode, the substitute shear strain field is used. A deflection distribution is investigated for simple supported rectangular and skew stiffened laminated composite plates with arbitrary orientation stiffener as not only variation of slenderness and aspect ratio of the plate but also variation of skew angle of skew stiffened plates.

  • Movements are a critical ability to young children's whole development, including physical, social/emotional, and cognitive development. This paper proposes the method to estimate movements suitable for young children's body conditions. The proposed method extracts a silhouette in each frame of videos that are obtained by deploying two video cameras by compensating illuminations, removing background and conducting morphology operations. And we extract silhouette feature values: an area, the ratio of length to width, the lowest foot position, and 7 Hu moments. Also, the area and movements of sub-area are used as local features. For motion estimation, we used probability propagation of the features extracted from the front and side frames. The proposed estimation algorithm is demonstrated for seven movements, walking, jumping, hopping, bending, stretching, balancing, and turning.

  • Bridge piers with bending failure mode are seriously damaged only in the area of plastic hinge length in earthquakes. For this situation, a modified method for the layout of longitudinal reinforcement is presented, i.e., the number of longitudinal reinforcement is increased in the area of plastic hinge length at the bottom of piers. The quasi-static test of three scaled model piers is carried out to investigate the local longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom of the pier on the seismic performance of the pier. One of the piers is modified by increased longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom of the pier and the other two are comparative piers. The results show that the pier failure with increased longitudinal bars at the bottom is mainly concentrated at the bottom of the pier, and the vulnerable position does not transfer. The hysteretic loop curve of the pier is fuller. The bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity is obviously improved. The bond-slip displacement between steel bar and concrete decreases slightly. The finite element simulations have been carried out by using ANSYS, and the results indicate that the seismic performance of piers with only increasing the number of steel bars (less than65%) in the plastic hinge zone can be basically equivalent to that of piers that the number of steel bars in all sections is the same as that in plastic hinge zone.

  • To recognition a human motion, in this paper, we propose a neural approach using silhouettes in video frames captured by two cameras placed at the front and side of the human body. To extract features of the silhouettes for motion estimation, the proposed system computes both global and local features and then groups these features into static and dynamic features depending on whether features are in a static frame. Extracted features are in a static frame. Extracted features are used to train a RBF network. The neural system uses static features as the input of the neural network and dynamic features as additional features for recognition. In this paper, the proposed method was applied to movement education for young children. The basic movements for such education consist of locomotor movements, such as walking, jumping, and hopping, and non-locomotor movements, including bending, stretching, balancing and turning. The system demonstrated the effectiveness of motion recognition for movement education generated by the proposed neural network. The proposed system dan be extended to the system for movement education which develops the spatial sense of young children.

  • The paper describes a theoretical model for the prediction of bridge temperatures from meteorological data measured at bridge site and local meteorological center together with existing finite element heat transfer theory and solar radiation transfer theory to determine the time dependent temperature distribution of bridge. In this analytical model, the most adequate equation for the calculation of solar radiation on the bridge surface, which is dominant in day time is described based on the results of several experimental studies for the solar energy. The validity of this model is tested against field data obtained from long term experimental program on Sadang Viaduct in Seoul. Also, this paper describes the linear correlation between design variables and meteorological data to establish analytical criteria for the prediction of the average temperature, which are responsible for the longitudinal deformation of the bridges and of the vertical differential temperature profiles. which are responsible for the bending deformations from the long term experimental results.

  • In MEMS devices, packaging induced stress or stress induced structure deformation become increasing concerns since it directly affects the performance of the device. In this paper, deformation behavior of MEMS gyroscope package subjected to temperature change is investigated using high-sensitivity moire interferometry. Using the real-time moire setup, fringe patterns are recorded and analyzed at several temperatures. Temperature dependent analyses of warpages and extensions/contractions of the package are presented. Linear elastic behavior is documented in the temperature region of room temperature to $125^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the package reveals that global bending occurs due to the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient between the chip, the molding compound and the PCB. Detailed global and local deformations of the package by temperature change are investigated, concerning the variation of natural frequency of MEMS gyro chip.

  • This study deals with the fabrication and thermal characterization of planar heating elements attached to the backside of the reflector used in the electrodeless lamp of a freezer. We tried to solve the problem of the local heat generation of the linear heating element that occurs about 50℃. The homogeneous dispersion and manufacturing excellence of the planar heating element produced were confirmed through SEM and EDS. In addition, the test specimens was prepared according to the change in the ratio of carbon fiber to the basis weight of the planar heating element, and a sample having a basis weight of 50g/㎡ having a content ratio of carbon fiber of 70% was selected. That sample showed low surface resistance of 4.3Ω/sq and high temperature of about 81℃ at 6V. Durability was confirmed by performing repeated bending evaluation of 3000 cycles for the sample. Large area test specimens were prepared to be applied to the actual reflector, insulated by EVA film and analyzed for their thermal characteristics. From 13V application, the temperature of the linear heating element was higher than 50℃ and the average temperature of 68℃ was maximum at 18V.

  • Active contour models have been extensively used to segment, match, and track objects of interest in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. With conventional methods an object boundary can be extracted by controlling the internal energy and external energy based on energy minimization. However, this still leaves a number of problems, such as initialization and poor convergence in concave regions. In particular, a contour is unable to enter a concave region based on the stretching and bending characteristic of the internal energy. Therefore, this study proposes a method that controls the internal energy by moving the local perpendicular bisector point of each control point on the contour, and determines the object boundary by minimizing the energy relative to the external energy. Convergence at a concave region can then be effectively implemented as regards the feature of interest using the internal energy, plus several objects can be detected using a multi-detection method based on the initial contour. The proposed method is compared with other conventional methods through objective validation and subjective consideration. As a result, it is anticipated that the proposed method can be efficiently applied to the detection of the pulmonary parenchyma region in medical images.

  • A conical roll-shaping process was proposed for fabrication of a metallic spiral blade applied to a small-scale wind turbine system. A spiral blade has continuously different curvatures, with a range of 100 to 350 mm radius. To fabricate this complex shape, we developed a conical roll-shaping process having two main conical rollers for feeding a blank sheet, and two cylindrical side rollers for control of local bending. For clear understanding of the process parameters, numerical analyses were conducted using a commercial code, Pam-Stamp. This study optimized the effects of process parameters, such as gap and angle between the main rollers and side rollers, and also the movement of side rollers. In order to increase the forming efficiency, a central rotation point was also calculated by the analytical approach. This developed rolling process can thus be utilized in a sheet metal forming process for obtaining spirally curved sheet metal shapes.
