  • A typical honeycomb sandwich panel consists of two thin, high-strength facings bonded to a thick, light-weight core. Each component by itself is relatively weak and flexible, but when it combind in a sandwich panel they produce a structure that is stiff, strong, and lightweight. In addition to use in honeycomb sandwich panels, honeycomb is used for energy absorption, radio frequency shielding, light diffusion, and to direct air flow.Accordingly, the usage of honeycomb sandwich structure is very widely applied to the aircraft, the automobile, and marine industry, etc., because of these advantages. Generally, this honeycomb sandwich structure is manufactured by autoclave process. In this study, the honeycomb sandwich structure was produced by prepreg. To prove the suitability the honeycomb sandwich structure with prepreg, The optimum design of the skin materials and honeycomb sandwich structure were evaluated with the theory of stress analysis.

  • Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.

  • Conventional backlight for liquid crystal display (LCD) uses mercury which leads to environmental pollution. In this study, characteristics of AC coplanar type mercury-free plasma flat lamp have been studied. Pollution-free Xe-He is adopted as a discharge gas system. Since the Xe gas has a lower efficiency in generating vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) than mercury, the improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency in the Xe gas system is very important. The electrode, dielectric, and phosphor layers constituting lamp are formed on the bottom glass by the screen printing method. The effects of pulse shape, on-time, and pulse frequency on the luminance and luminous efficiency have been examined. For Xe(5%)-He gas, the lamp exhibits higher efficiency with sharper pulse shape, higher peak voltage, and shorter pulse on-time (up to 2 $\mu\textrm{s}$). Higher efficiency and lower consumption of power were obtained at 30 kHz than at 60 kHz. The collision of ion to bottom electrodes is a dominant factor to raise the lamp temperature. Therefore the high voltage and low current discharge system is necessary for reduction of the lamp temperature as well as for enhancement of the luminous efficiency.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the fit of the anterior and posterior teeth printed using two light-curing three-dimensional (3D) printers. Methods: Anterior and posterior single crowns were designed using dental software and were printed using 2 types of 3D printers, liquid crystal display (LCD) and digital light processing (DLP) (n=40). After the printed crown was scanned again from inside and outside, the prepared teeth were evaluated using a 3D program. To compare the root mean square (RMS) results among groups (α=0.05), the one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test were used. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the mean RMS values of the anterior and posterior teeth (p>0.05). However, as a result of comparing the internal, external, and tooth shapes, the DLP group showed significantly low errors in the inner and outer surfaces than LCD group (p<0.05). Conclusion: In terms of clinical acceptance standard of 100 ㎛, the fit of the anterior and posterior teeth fabricated using LCD and DLP was clinically acceptable.

  • This paper presents the acceleration optimization of a high-speed LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) transfer system for the minimization of vibration. To reduce vibration is one of key requirements for the dynamic control of a high-speed LCD transfer system. In this paper, the concept of finite jerk (the first derivative of acceleration) has been introduced for realizing input acceleration. The profile of finite jerk has been optimized using a genetic algorithm so that vibration effect can be minimized. In order to incorporate a genetic algorithm, the dynamic model of a LCD transfer system which is realized by using the $ADAMS^{(R){$ software has been linked to the simulation system constructed by the $MATLAB^{(R)}$. The simulation results illustrated that the duration of finite jerk can be optimized so as to minimize the magnitude of vibration. It has been also shown that the acceleration optimization with finite jerk can make the high-speed motion of a LCD transfer system result in low vibration, compared with the conventional motion control with trapezoidal velocity profile.

  • In order to increase the productivity in manufacturing TFT-LCD(thin film transistor-liquid crystal display), it is essential to classify defects that occur during the production and make an appropriate decision on whether the product with defects is scrapped or not. The decision mainly depends on classifying the defects accurately. In this paper, we present an effective classification method for film defects acquired in the panel production line by analyzing the intensity distribution and shape feature of the defects. We first generate a binary image for each defect by separating defect regions from background (non-defect) regions. Then, we extract various features from the defect regions such as the linearity of the defect, the intensity distribution, and the shape characteristics considering intensity, and construct a referential image database that stores those feature values. Finally, we determine the type of a defect by matching a defect image with a referential image in the database through the matching cost function between the two images. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we conducted a classification experiment using defect images acquired from real TFT-LCD production lines. Experimental results show that our method has achieved highly effective classification enough to be used in the production line.

  • LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD unit and it consists of several optical sheets(such as prism, diffuser and protector sheets), LCP (Light Guide Plate), light source (CCFL or LED) and mold frame. The LGP of LCD-BLU is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50{\sim}200{\mu}m$ in diameter on it by erosion method. But the surface of the erosion dots of LGP is very rough due to the characteristics of the erosion process during the mold fabrication, so that its light loss is high along with the dispersion of light into the surface. Accordingly, there is a limit in raising the luminance of LCD-BLU. In order to overcome the limit of current dot patterned LGP, optical pattern design with $50{\mu}m$ micro-lens was applied in the present study. Especially, the negative and positive micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LiGA with thermal reflow process was applied to the optical design of LGP. The attention was paid to the effects of different pattern conditions to the brightness distribution of BLU with micro-lens patterned LGP. Finally, negative micro-lens patterned LGP showed superior results to the one made by positive in average luminance.

  • Optical three-dimensional (3D) measurement systems based on digital fringe projection are used in many contactless measurement applications. The system which can measure a dozen micrometers uses a liquid-crystal display (LCD) as the projection unit for generating a digital fringe pattern, because a flexible fringe pattern can be easily made by computer software. According to the gamma nonlinearity of the LCD projection unit, the digital fringe projection error on the object affects the accuracy of 3D object measurement. An improved method of LCD gamma-nonlinearity error reduction is proposed, by using the inverse function of the intensity transfer function to improve the accuracy. The improvement due to the proposed method is shown by measuring the difference in precision between a computer-generated sine wave and a camera-obtained sine wave for a standard semiconductor specimen.

  • Recently, LCD TV using LED backlight has a great attention due to its low power consumption, slim construction, mercury free, wide color gamut and fast response. For the uniform brightness of the LCD panel, multi channel LEDs and DC/DC converter for each LED are required in conventional system. Therefore energy conversion efficiency is poor, the system size bulky and the cost of production high. To overcome these above mentioned drawbacks, a new current-balancing multi-channel LED driver is proposed in this paper. It can not only drive multi-channel LEDs with one DC/DC converter but also provide all LEDs with constant balanced current. To confirm the validity of the proposed driver, its operation and performance are verified on a prototype for 46" LCD TV.
