The purpose of the present study is to clarify the stratigraphy and geologic structure of the Great Limestone Series by means of study on fossil conodonts and detail investigation of geologic structure. In recent years very few geologists in Korea argue without confident evidences against the age and stratigraphy of the Great Limestone Series which have been rather well established previously in most parts of the regions although it is ambiguous and has not been studied in other areas. Five type localities in the Kangweon basin where the Great Limestone Series is well cropped out were chosen for the study. Total 26 genus and 66 species of conodont were identified from 290 samples collected and treated. From the study on conodonts the age of each formations of the Great Limestone Series has been determined as follows: The Great Limestone Series of Duwibong type Duwibong limestone: Caradocian (mid-Ord.) Jikunsan shale: Landeilian (mid-Ord.) Maggol limestone: Llanvirn-Llandeilian (mid-Ord.) Dumugol: Arenigian (Ord.) Hwajeol: Upper Cambrian The Great Limestone Series of Yeongweol type Mungok (Samtaesan) : Ordovician Machari: upper Cambrian The Great Limestone Series of Jeongseon type Erstwhile Jeongseon limestone: mid-Ord. The erstwhile Jongseon Limestone formation in Jeongseon district is separated into Hwajeol, Dongjeom, Dumudong, and Maggol formations which were cropped out repeatedly by folding and faulting, but Maggol is predominant in areal distribution. Yemi Limestone Breccia bed is not a single bed but distributed in several horizons so that it bears no stratigraphic significance. The limestone bed above Yemi Limestone Breccia, which was believed by some geologists to be much younger than Ordovician, is identified to be Maggol and its age is determined to be mid-Ordovician. Sambangsan formation in Yeongweol district was believed to be Cambrian age and lower horizon than Machari formation by Kobayashi, but C. M. Son believed that it might belong to later than Ordovician and lies above the Great Limestone Series of Yeongweol type. It was identified to be upper Cambrian and lies beneath the Machari formation and above the Daeki formation, the lower most horizon of the Great Limestone Series. The age of Yeongweol type Choseon system is contemporaneous with that of Duwibong type Choseon system. The difference in lithofacies is not due to lateral facies change, but due to the difference in its depositional environment. The Yeongweol type Choseon system is believed to be deposited in the small Yeongweol basin which was separated from the main Kangweon sedimentary basin. Judging from these facts it is definitely concluded that there exists no Gotlandian formation in the regions studied. Structurally the Kangweon basin comprises five basins and two uplifted areas. These structures were originated by at least two crustal movements, that is, Songrim disturbance of Triassic and Daebo orogeny of Jurasic age.

There is a limestone basin surrounded by the mountains consisted of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in the Masung, Munkyung city, Kyungsangpook do. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the geomorphic processes of the gentle hillslopes in the marginal piedmont of Masung basin. To do so, I analyzed deposits over hillslopes and the relation ship between the distance from the divide and the height(above sea level) at the longitudinal profile of the hillslope, and considered interrelation between the distributions of the gentle hillslopes(less than 230m) and lithology. Geomorphic processes of Masung basin are as follow: (1) The depth of deposits over hillslope increases toward downstream of the hillslope. Most gravels within deposits, whose lithology is limestone, are those eroded at the boundary(overthrust fault zone) between the back-mountain and the hillslope. Deposits at the outward margin of hillslope is well sorted. and moderately imbricated. (2) Hillslope at the margin of the basin(160-230m asl) is formed by the action of 'the flow with channel'. At the boundary between the soft rock(limestone; basin floor) and hard rock(sedimentary and metamorphic rock; back-mountain), the relatively weak limestone is eroded to fresh bedrock by the subsequent action of the overland flow, and therefore discontinuity in slope appeared. (3) After hills lopes were formed, sediments(boulders and fine material) produced during dissection in back-mountain buried deposits over hillslope. In conclusion, geomorphic processes of Masung basin is 'differential erosion due to differentiation of lithological hardness' having suggested as geomorphic processes of granitic basin. However it is not 'removal of weathering material due to sheetflow' but 'erosion due to the overland flow with channel'.
${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values were determined for the Paleozoic limestones (Great Linestone Series) from the Taebaegsan region and the age-unknown limestones (Janggun Formation) from the Janggun mine, Korea. Limestones of the Great Limestone Series exhibit a range of carbon isotopic composition from -4.5 +1.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of -1.1‰, relative to the PDB standard, and of oxygen isotpic composition from +8.8 to +23.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of +16.0‰, relative to the SMOW, falling into the normal marine limestone range according to Keith and Weber (1964), and Degens and Epstein(1964). Carbon isotopic composition of limestones of the Great Limestone Series becomes progressively lighter from Pungchon limestone of middle Cambrian age to mid-Ordovician Maggol limestone, possibly due to change in depositional environment in the Taebaegsan basin. Variation in isotopic composition of limestones from Hwajeol to Dumugal formation offers the possibility or deposition in shallow sea environment, in which fresh waters were added in several stages. Janggun limestone of unknown age may be corelated with the Paleozoic limestones of Great Limestone Series as infered from the istopic composition ranging from -2.8 to + 0.7‰ of ${\delta}^{13}C$ and +13.4 to +22.4‰ of ${\delta}^{18}O$.

Physical geography is the discipline which deals with the relationship between man and natural environment. Therefore, it should be studied as the organized unity. In this paper I recognize the drainage basin as a framework outlining physical geography, describe the difference of inhabitant's life style due to the difference of natural environment in the drainage basin, and consider the meaning of drainage basin as a unit of life(and unit of regional geography). Munkyung is divided into three regions(intermontane basin region, middle mountainous region, marginal hilly region of the great basin) owing to the topographic characteristics. Subdivision in these regions is related closely to drainage network distribution, specially in intermontane basin region. And small regions have developed with the confluence point of $3{\sim}4$ order streams as the central figure. Intermontane basin region is the valley floor of Sinbuk-Soya-Kauun-Nongam stream located in the limestone region which is exposed according to Munkyung fault at its northern part. Small streams are affected strongly by the influence of the NNE-SSE or WNW-ESE tectolineament. Thus Kaeripryungro(鷄立嶺路), Saejaegil(새재길), Ewharyungro(伊火嶺路) and so on are constructed through the tectolineament. In the valley floors of small streams which flow into the intermontane basin, there are large floodplains. Floodplain in Sinbuk, Joryung, and Yangsan stream is used to paddy field or orchard, and in Nongam stream is used to paddy field or vegetable field. Hills are distributed largely in the periphery of intermontane basin. Limestone hills in Kauun and Masung basin are not continuous to the present low and flat floodplain, and most of those are used to forest land and field. On the other side. granite hills in Koyori are continuous to be used to the present floodplain, and they are used to residential area and field. In the middle mountainous region are there hilly mountains constructed in the geology of Palaeozoic Pyeongan System in northern area and Chosun System's Limestone Series in southern area, and banded gneiss and schist among Sobaeksan Gneiss Complex. In Palaeozoic Pyeongan System region are there relatively rugged mountains and ingrown meanders developed along tectolineaments. Chosun System's Limestone Series region builds up a geomorphic surface, develops various karst landforms. Mountainous area is used to field. On the other hand, especially in case of Hogye, valley bottom is wide, long, and discontinuous to slope, is used to paddy field dominantly. And schist region in Youngnam Block of Pre-Cambrian is rugged mountainous. Marginal hilly region of the great basin is hilly zone located in the margin of erosional basin(Bonghwa-Youngju-Yechon-Hamchang-Sangju). This region is lower geomorphic surface which is consisted of hills of $50{\sim}100$m height. Hills are used to field or orchard, and dissected gentle depression is used to paddy field.
About 30 limestone caves have already been developed at the basin of the River Dong. baekyong Cave, Hwaam Cave, and Jeolgol Cave are of great worth, not noly as a matter of study, but as a matter of the tourist resources they develop. Among them Baekyong Cave is the best. I'm going to give a full detailed account of cave deposits and cave phenomena focused on its view to preserve the looks of Baekyong Cave by analyzing the speleothem of Baekyong Cave and cave system scientifically and systematizing them. Baekyong Cave, Natural Monument Ho. 260, is on the verge of being submerged. Peculiar things in Baekyong Cave are 1) pseudo stalgmite 2) anthodites 3) erratic stalagmites 4) cave shield 5) lost river 6) cave flint 7) pit fall but I have also mentioned general and related matters.

Two assertions about the process the formation of the high-purity limestone in the Taebaeksan Basin, categorized into syngenetic and epigenetic origin, are verified on the basis of its oxygen-carbon stable isotopic characteristics. The carbonate rocks sampled from the selective six high-purity limestone mines and several outcrops in the Daegi formation are featured by various colors such as the gray, light gray and dark gray. They show a wide range of oxygen stable isotope ratios (4.5 ~ 21.6 ‰), but a narrow range of carbon stable isotope ratios (-1.1 ~ 0.8 ‰, except for vein calcite), which means that they had not experienced strong hydrothermal alteration. In addition, there is no difference in the range of the oxygen stable isotope ratios by mine and color, and it is similar to the range from surrounding outcrop samples. These results indicate that the effect of the hydrothermal alteration were negligible in the generation of high-purity limestone in deposit scale. Whereas, the carbonate rocks can be divided texturally into two groups on the basis of an oxygen isotope ratio; the massive-textured or well-layered samples (>15 ‰), and the layer-disturbed (or layer-destructed) and showing over two colors in one sample (<15 ‰). In the multi-colored samples, the bright parts are characterized by the very low oxygen stable isotope ratios, compared to the dark parts, implying the increase in brightness of the carbonate rocks could be induced by the interaction between hydrothermal fluid and rock. However, these can be applied in a small scale such as one sample and are not suitable for interpretation of the generation of high-purity limestone as a deposit scale. In particular, the high oxygen isotope ratios from the recrystallized white limestone suggest that hydrothermal fluids are also rarely involved during recrystallization process. In addition, the occurrences of the high-purity limestone orebody strongly support the high-purity limestone in the area are syngenetic rather than epigenetic; the high-purity limestone layers in the area show continuous and almost horizontal shapes, and is intercalated between dolomite layers. Consequently, the overall reinterpretation based on the sequential stratigraphy over the Taebaeksan basin would play an important role to find additional reserves of the high-purity limestone.

This study tried to reveal relative surface denudation resistance and ranking by geologic types in the Southern Korean Peninsula using an 1:250,000 digital geologic map and ASTER GDEM. Among rock types such as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, metamorphic rock showed the greatest resistance to surface denudation. The most resistant rock to surface denudation by geologic periods (e.g., the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic) was found from the Precambrian. Among the major tectonic settings in the Southern Korean Peninsula such as the Gyeonggi massif, Okcheon belt, Yeongnam massif, Gyeongsang basin and Pohang basin, the Okcheon belt indicated the greatest resistance. The most and least resistant rocks from the representative nine rocks in the Southern Korean Peninsula were Paleozoic limestone, and Cretaceous sedimentary rock and Cenozoic sedimentary rock, respectively. This study suggests that Paleozoic limestone, Cretaceous volcanic rock, Paleozoic sedimentary rock and Precambrian gneiss can be regarded as hard rocks with high elevation, steep slope and complicated relief, while soft rocks with low elevation, gentle slope and simple relief are Jurassic granite, Cretaceous sedimentary rock and Cenozoic sedimentary rock.
Prospecting for energy and mineral resources is essential kind of public fundamentals that manage the nation's economy. Most explorations in the past were concentrated in the simple structural traps in relatively shallow depth. Due to their vast exploitation, recent history has shown that the emphasis in explorations has steadily shifted toward the subtle stratigraphic traps in deeper level. Increasing exploration for the subtle stratigraphic traps in deeper level requires precise correlation and assessment of deeply buried strata in the basin. However, the descriptive strati-graphic principles used for evaluation of the simple structural traps are limited to delineate the subtle stratigraphic traps in deeper depth. As this occurs. it is imperative to establish a new stratigraphic paradigm that allows a more sophisticated understanding on the basin stratigraphy. This study provides an exemplary application of integrated stratigraphic approach to defining basin history of the Middle Ordovician Taebacksan Basin, Korea. The integrated stratigraphic approach gives much better insight to unravel the stratigraphic response to tectonic evolution of the basins, which can be utilized fer enhancing the efficiency of resources exploration and development in the basins. Thus, the integrated stratigraphic approach should be emphasized as a new stratigraphic norm that can improve the probability of success in any type of resources exploration and development project.
High-grade limestone applied to various chemical industries is abundant within upper Pungchon formation in Taebaeksan basin, South Korea. Geophysical exploration is one of the most efficient methods to investigate subsurface geological structure in an extensive area. Since the geophysical exploration for the high-grade limestone has rarely been conducted in Korea, its appropriate strategy has not been set up yet. In this study, we focused on to suggest the reasonable strategy and accumulate geophysical databases which are essential for interpreting geophysical images by characterizing laboratory physical properties of in-situ rocks. Hence, rocks were obtained from drilled cores consisting of lower Hwajeol formation, Pungchon formation, and dykes in Jeongseon area, Gangwon province. Geophysical laboratory experiments and petrography of the rocks were conducted. Since susceptibility values of the rocks in Pungchon Formation were obviously lower than those of upper Hwajeol and dykes, it is considered that the lithological boundaries could be distinguished by magnetic survey. In addition, electrical properties of the rocks in middle Pungchon formation were relatively different compared with those of upper/lower Pungchon formations. Thus, induced polarization is shown to be able to detect the high-grade limestone in upper Pungchon formation.
In the Jeon Cheon Basin, unconsolidated alluvium and marine clay beds overlying Tertiary conglomerate and impermeable mudstone, and Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks composed of mainly cavernous limestones, and age-unknowned crystalline rocks are occured. Most productive rock is Cambro-Ordovician limestones containing a lot of solution openings and secondary porosities and shows its transmissivity of 1836$m^2$/day and storativity of 1.47 $\times$$10^{-3}$. The storage of deep seated groundwater in linestone aquifer is estimated about 1059 $\times$$10^6$ metric tons, being equivalent to 6 years total precipitation of the basin. The safe yield of the groundwater to be abstracted from the aquifer is about 126,000 tons/day. To pump at least 100,000 tons/day of groundwater from the said aquifer, a well field comprising 34 deep wells ranging in depth from 80 to 100 meter and penetrating the cavernous limestone aquifer shall be established at middle and down stream area.
