Artificial photosynthesis the first chapter: Light driven hydrogen generation from water

  • In the area of artificial photosynthesis, particularly for the generation of hydrogen form water, much attention has been paid on organic-inorganic hybrid system. Most of all, a dye/TiO2-combined system has been suggested and its potential utility was well manifested. However, due to its complicated nature of charge interactions in between dye and TiO2 -interface there remains a great challenge to establish the charge-activity relationship, per se light driven charge generation and recombination kinetics with respect to the amount of hydrogen produced. Further complexity of that hybrid system has been witnessed when sacrificial donor and aqueous media are considered. To unveil the operating mechanism on such a dye/TiO2-combined system, we have prepared organic dyes suitable to account for the effect of sacrificial donor as well as water interactions, and prepared the typical dye-grafted TiO2 films to investigate charge-activity relationship. Femtosecond flash photolysis clearly defined the dye effects anchored on to the TiO2 platform. In addition, photodynamic data contemplated well to the dye orientation proposed by the DFT calculations. Recent findings provide fundamental understanding on the dye-grafted TiO2 system and establish a firm background how future dye-sensitized organic-inorganic hybrid system can be designed for the light driven hydrogen generation from water.

양자점용 가교제를 이용한 고해상도 양자점 광패터닝 기술 (High-resolution Patterning of Colloidal Quantum Dots via Non-destructive, Light-driven Ligand Crosslinking)

  • 최근 우수한 발광 특성을 갖는 양자점을 고해상도 디스플레이의 발광 소재로 도입하고자 하는 노력이 활발하다. 양자점을 활용한 디스플레이의 실현을 위해서는 콜로이드 상태인 다색의 양자점을 고해상도로 패터닝하는 기술의 확립이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 ethane-1,2-diyl bis(4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate)를 양자점용 가교제로 활용하여 용액공정을 기반으로 형성된 양자점 박막을 고해상도로 패터닝한 기술을 소개하고자 한다. 위 양자점용 가교제의 양 말단에는 아지드 그룹을 포함한 작용기가 존재한다. 아지드 기는 자외선에 의해 광 활성화되어 양자점 표면의 알킬 리간드와 가교 결합을 형성함으로써, 양자점 박막에 화학적 내구성을 부여한다. 본 기술을 기반으로, 적색, 녹색, 청색의 카드뮴 기반 양자점을 고해상도로 패터닝하고 정밀하게 배열하여 인치 당 화소 수 1400 이상의 픽셀 형성에 성공하였다. 또한 가교 반응 후에도 성능 저하가 없는 양자점 박막 및 자발광 양자점 다이오드를 개발하였다.

Construction of Strontium Titanate/Binary Metal Sulfide Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity

  • A novel strontium titanate/binary metal sulfide ($SrTiO_3/SnCoS_4$) heterostructure was synthesized by a simple two-step hydrothermal method. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance of $SrTiO_3/SnCoS_4$ composites was evaluated in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic performance of $SrTiO_3/SnCoS_4-5%$ is much higher than that of pure $SrTiO_3$, $SnCoS_4$, $SrTiO_3/SnS_2$ and $SrTiO_3/CoS_2$. The $SrTiO_3/SnCoS_4$ composite material with 5 wt.% of $SnCoS_4$ showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for MO degradation, and the degradation rate could reach 95% after 140 min irradiation time. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was ascribed to not only the improvement of visible light absorption efficiency, but also the construction of a heterostructure which make it possible to effectively separate photoexcited electrons and holes in the two-phase interface.

What Shapes Disk Galaxies?: Bar Driven Secular Evolution on Disk Galaxies

  • We present evidence of the bar driven secular evolution on disks from z~0.8 to z~0.01. Using $3.6{\mu}m$ images of nearby galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) and images from the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS), we find that barred galaxies show a light deficit in the disk surrounding the bar within the bar radius. We quantify this light deficit and find that galaxies with a stronger bar (longer, higher Bar/T) show a more pronounced light deficit. We examine snapshots from N-body simulations and confirm that as a barred galaxy evolves, the bar becomes longer and the light deficit becomes more pronounced. Theoretical studies have predicted that bars evolve by capturing nearby disk stars and employing them to make the bar more elongated and stronger. Therefore the light deficit in the disk is likely produced by bars, and thus bars play a major role in shaping their host galaxies, redistributing not only the gaseous but also the stellar mass within galaxies, with important consequences to their subsequent evolution.

Target Birth Intensity Estimation Using Measurement-Driven PHD Filter

  • The probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter is an effective means to track multiple targets in that it avoids explicit data associations between the measurements and targets. However, the target birth intensity as a prior is assumed to be known before tracking in a traditional target-tracking algorithm; otherwise, the performance of a conventional PHD filter will decline sharply. Aiming at this problem, a novel target birth intensity scheme and an improved measurement-driven scheme are incorporated into the PHD filter. The target birth intensity estimation scheme, composed of both PHD pre-filter technology and a target velocity extent method, is introduced to recursively estimate the target birth intensity by using the latest measurements at each time step. Second, based on the improved measurement-driven scheme, the measurement set at each time step is divided into the survival target measurement set, birth target measurement set, and clutter set, and meanwhile, the survival and birth target measurement sets are used to update the survival and birth targets, respectively. Lastly, a Gaussian mixture implementation of the PHD filter is presented under a linear Gaussian model assumption. The results of numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve a better performance in tracking systems with an unknown newborn target intensity.

전기습윤으로 구동하는 이중 광원 조향장치 (Tandem Light Deflector Operated by Electrowetting)

  • This paper presents a new type of electrowetting driven tandem light deflector for high performance optical application. To steer an incident light, the proposed light deflector deforms the fluid interface using electrowetting actuation. The performance of the light deflector was experimentally verified by using a prototype of the proposed light deflector. Single and tandem light deflectors were separately prepared using microfabrication processes. The optical tests of the deflectors were conducted using a laser light. The proposed tandem light deflector obtained a 45° beam steering angle with a 5.3° deflection angle while a single light deflector was required for a 10.9° deflection angle to obtain the same beam steering angle. The proposed tandem light deflector with high optical capability can be applied to various optical applications from camera modules in mobile smart devices to advanced future optical systems.

  • Imaging and scattering techniques using thermal neutrons allow to analyze complex specimens in scientific and industrial researches. Owing to this advantage, there have been a considerable demand for neutron facilities in the industrial sector. Among neutron sources, an accelerator driven compact neutron source is the only one that can satisfy the various requirements-construction budget, facility size, and required neutron flux-of industrial applications. In this paper, a target, moderator, and reflector (TMR) system for low-energy proton-accelerator driven compact thermal neutron source was designed via Monte Carlo simulations. For 10-30 MeV proton beams, the optimal conditions of the beryllium target were determined by considering the neutron yield and the blistering of the target. For a non-borated polyethylene moderator, the neutronic properties were verified based on its thickness. For a reflector, three candidates-light water, beryllium, and graphite-were considered as reflector materials, and the optimal conditions were identified. The results verified that the neutronic intensity varied in the order beryllium > light water > graphite, the compacter size in the order light water < beryllium < graphite and the shorter emission time in the order graphite < light water < beryllium. The performance of the designed TMR system was compared with that of existing facilities and were laid between performance of existing facilities.

아조벤젠 분자의 사슬 내 위치에 따른 고분자 블렌드 박막의 비등방성 광 변형에 관한 연구 (Effect of the Position of Azobenzene Moiety on the Light-Driven Anisotropic Actuating Behavior of Polyvinylalcohol Polymer Blend Films)

  • 소재의 물리적 변형을 야기할 수 있는 구조 변화 분자에 관한 연구는 잠재적인 응용 분야가 다양하며 매우 흥미로운 분야이다. 특히, 광응답성 물질은 비접촉식 에너지 전달이 가능하여 비파괴, 국소 조사, 원격 제어가 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 광응답성 물질인 아조 발색단의 고분자 내 위치에 따른 물리적, 광학적 성질을 조사하고, 이를 수용성 젤인 폴리비닐알코올에 분산시켜 자외선-가시광선 조사에 따른 이중 안정성 거동을 조사하였다. 신축 배향된 아조벤젠 고분자에 비편광 자외선을 상온에서 조사하여 비등방성 광변형을 시연한 결과, 아조벤젠 고분자 블렌드의 물리적 변형 성능은, 이제까지 보고되었던 많은 아조벤젠 가교 액정 탄성체의 광변형 성능보다 우수한 것으로서, 곁가지 아조벤젠 고분자 필름의 $15^{\circ}$ 구부러짐 변형이 상온에서도 관찰될 정도로 매우 뛰어나며 그 변형이 가역적이었다. 이와 같이, 화학적 접근 방식보다 쉽게 얻을 수 있는 아조벤젠/고분자 블렌드 필름의 성능이 매우 우수하여, 치수 변형이 필요한 다양한 시스템에 응용할 수 있다.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for injector driving.
