  • This paper investigates the relationship between J-integral and crack tip opening displacement, ${\delta}_t$ using Gordens results of numerical analysis. Estimation were carried out for several strength levels such as ultimate, flow, yield, ultimate-flow, flow-yield stress to determine the influence of strain hardening and the ratio of crack length to width on the $J-{\delta}_t$ relationship. It was found that for SE(B) specimens, the $J-{\delta}_t$ relationship can be applied to relate J to ${\delta}_t$ as follows $J=m_j{\times}{\sigma}_i{\times}{\delta}_t$ where $m_j=1.27773+0.8307({\alpha}/W)$, ${\sigma}_i:{\sigma}_U$, ${\sigma}_{U-F}={\frac{1}{2}} ({\sigma}_U+{\sigma}_F$), ${\sigma}_F$, ${\sigma}_F}$ $Y=({\sigma}_F+{\sigma}_Y)$, ${\sigma}_Y$

  • In this research, bending analysis of a micro sandwich skew plate with isotropic core and piezoelectric composite face sheets reinforced by carbon nanotube on the elastic foundations are studied. The classical plate theory (CPT) are used to model micro sandwich skew plate and to apply size dependent effects based on modified strain gradient theory. Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is considered for the effective mechanical properties of the nanocomposite face sheets. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived using minimum principle of total potential energy and then solved by extended Kantorovich method (EKM). The effects of width to thickness ratio and length to width of the sandwich plate, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, the material length scale parameters, volume fraction of CNT, the angle of skew plate, different boundary conditions and types of cores on the deflection of micro sandwich skew plate are investigated. One of the most important results is the reduction of the deflection by increasing the angle of the micro sandwich skew plate and decreasing the deflection by decreasing the thickness of the structural core. The results of this research can be used in modern construction in the form of reinforced slabs or stiffened plates and also used in construction of bridges, the wing of airplane.

  • Freshly harvested American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) seeds were stratified at two locations over each of three years. Seed development and temperature in the stratification boxes were investigated until the seed was removed 12 months later and direct-seeded in the field. During stratification and seeding (14 months) three embryo stages were identified. In Stage I of 250 days (Sept. to mid-May) embryo length increased from about 0.5 to 1.0 mm: in Stage II of 100 days (mid-May to late Aug. when seeded) length increased to 2.0 mm and in Stage III (late Aug. to late Nov.) length increased to 5.3 mm. Excerpt split width could also be placed in three stages. Changes in embryo length correlated with embryo endosperm length ratio. Insertion compression tests showed that the excerpt softened rapidly in late Stage II and throughout Stage III. The stratification box temperatures at all depths (10, 25 and 50 cm) never exceeded -2$^{\circ}C$ even when the air temperatures dropped to -13$^{\circ}C$ and were, therefore not damaging to the seeds.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of piezoelectric transformer is studied for driving CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). In order to investigate the effects of geometrical dimensions, λvibration-mode type piezoelectric transformers with different sizes in the length(l), width$(\omega)$ and thickness(t) are made of ceramics with PZT-PMWS compositions. The increases in temperature and aging effect are also measured in the transformer of PT-3 sample under the condition of operation continuously for 10 hrs. As the results of dimensional effects, the output power and voltage step-up ratio are largely affected by the ratio of length to thickness(l/t) rather than that of length to $width(l/\omega)$. The output power and step-up ratio are increased with increasing l/t. On case of PT-3, the output voltages are 510[Vrms] at 36[Vrms] in input voltage, $100[k\Omega]$ in load resistance. Temperature increases and variation of output voltages are $10[^{\circ}C]$ and less than 5[%], respectively.

  • The non-dimensional convective heat losses from each surface are investigated as a function of the non-dimensional fin length, width and the ratio of upper surface Biot number to bottom surface Biot number (Bi2/Bi1) using the three-dimensional separation of variables method. Heat loss ratio in view of each surface with the variation of Bi2/Bi1 is presented. The variation of the non-dimensioal temperare profile along the fin center line for a thermally asymmetric conditions is also presented.

  • If a mandibular prognathic patient has an extremely unnatural anteroposterior and vertical maxilla or keen esthetical perception for facial profile, orthognathic surgery must be performed along with orthodontic treatment, which alone cannot provide satisfactory results in this case. Esthetical improvement becomes an important factor in the satisfaction level of the patient's treatment result, but an attempt to objectively measure beauty holds many problems. Therefore, in the end, the patient submits the final esthetical evaluation based on his/her subjective viewpoint. Because Korean people have a tendency to prefer the facial appeareance of westerners, they favor an oval shaped face over the traditional round face. This research was conducted in response to the complaints raised by patients who claim that their face had become more round from widening of facial width after the orthognathic surgery for manidibular prognathism than before the surgery. The following results were obtained on the changes in facial appearance and patient satisfaction level by analyzing the skull P-A analysis of total of 14 patients (8 male and 6 female) who underwent orthognathic surgery primarily chief complaint for manidibular prognathism and from their responses on questionnaires. These results are to be used in the research on the pre- and post- operative changes in facial height and width from orthognatic surgery. 1. Three ($21.4\%$) of 14 patients said that their face had widened. 2. The A group showed no change in mandibular width but B group showed a 0.7mm reduction. The facial width increased by 0.45mm and 0.66mm in groups A and B, respectively, after the orthognathic surgery 3. After the surgery the facial length changed by an 0.52mm increase in upper facial height , 1.19mm reduction in lower facial height, and 0.7mm reduction in mandibular height in group A. In group B group, there was a 0.67mm reduction in upper facial height, 3.66mm reduction in lower facial height, and 5mm reduction in mandibular height. 4. In reference to facial width, the facial height showed $1.5\%$ reduction in group A and $3.6\%$ reduction in group B after the surgery. 5. In reference mandibular height-to-facial width ratio, there was a $1.3\%$ reduction in group A, and $4.4\%$ reduction in group B after the surgery. 6. In reference to the mandibular height-to-width ratio, there was a $1.3\%$ reduction in group A and $4.3\%$ reduction in group B after the surgery. 7. Although the change in the facial width due to surgery can be ignored, sufficient explanation should be Provided to the patient before surgery on the fact that the face can appear to be relatively wide because of the reduced facial length as result of the surgery.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode 1/3 stress intensity factors $K_{1}$ and $K_{3}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. the parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length .lambda. crack slant angle .alpha, thickness ratio .betha. and width ratio .omega. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The effect of thickness ratio .betha. on $K_{1}$ is relatively great in comparison to $K_{3}$.

  • In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.
