Enhancement of Borneo's Indegenous Design

  • Derivation of modern products from the by gone age has contributed much for the new modern living. It has been generally recognized that the various ethnicities in Borneo with different backgrounds had made Borneo a place of cultural diversity. However as time passed, most indigenous products are no longer in used or are stored in poor condition. Most products nearly aged over a century are still in a good condition with invaluable sentiments. Indigenous product is an artifact that had been designed and used by certain community of people such as tools, clothing, crafts and goods. Each design may have its own identity to the community. Some of the indigenous products which are no longer in use at present are kept by the community as their collections. The research reveals similarities in the interests of indigenous products, concerns and realities of indigenous communities from the different regions. The study suggests that learning about indigenous materials, such as hand-made products and machine-made products is necessary for the local industry to develop a product identity that is distinctly local. Most indigenous products show evidence of connections to old traditions, yet are new to the design market.

Health Education in the Era of Health Promotion (건강증진시대의 보건교육)

  • Definition of health education can be various depending on historical background and individual point of view. In the industrialized era when health promotion is given a high priority in health activities, health education could be defined as a combination of planned learning experiences and social actions, which expand health knowledge and experiences of individuals and communities in order to meet their health needs, change harmful health behaviors to be desirable for health promotion and motivate them to do that. To realize the proposed definition of health education, health education should develop new policies in harmony with health promotion, facilitate the development of human resources, reflect the modern educational technology, strengthen multisectoral approach, and pay more attention to monitoring and evaluation. To fulfill the above mentioned role, health education approach should shift foci from diseases to health orientation, from individualistic health behavior modification to a systematic change of the general public, from medical domination to recognition of lay competence and from authoritarian health education to supportive health education.

Analysis of a Korea-based Language Teacher Organization Public Social Networking Service

  • In recent years, studies have emerged highlighting the role of social networking services in the English as a foreign language context of Korea, particularly for teaching and learning, but none examine the role of Facebook in enhancing communities of practice. Therefore, this study undertakes such an endeavor on a Korea-based language teacher organization Facebook group. Social networking analysis came to reveal a group consisting of largely non-engaged members, with several key users successfully bridging the network and promoting engagement and interaction via commenting. Although the most viral posts were disproportionately organizational, professional development clearly emerges as the largest concern for active members. Ultimately, it will be critical for increasing success of the group as a social networking service to establish a means of further engaging all members, including those on the network periphery. To fully meet organizational goals, it will be imperative for key actors to be used increasingly proactively.

  • Currently, the global atmosphere around the world is altering at a very rapid pace. Among those changes, some are beneficial, but most of the changes are lead to destruction to our planet. The area of environmental science is a significant resource for learning more about these changes. Due to the urbanization, the human population is increasing, natural resources becoming very limited. To solve the limited resources issues, recycling is absolutely an alternative source for the new demands and limitations. Recycling education is very important to raise awareness among students and their communities about the need for recycling and what materials are recyclable locally. In this paper, we reported the role of sustainability science and technology and the impact of recycling research education in the middle schools, both in developing countries and Asian countries and also we included the brief data of global recycling of waste.

Policy Suggestions for Fostering Teacher ICT Competencies in Developing Countries: An ODA Project Case in Peru

  • Many developing countries consider ICT as a key enabler to improve their educational systems and teachers are viewed as change agents. This paper aims to present policy suggestions concerning how to foster teachers' ICT competencies in developing countries based on the outcomes of an ODA project case in Peru. This study was conducted through three stages: Literature survey, site visit, and policy suggestions. To draw relevant policy suggestions, we employed the framework of the 'macro-meso-micro' level of teacher professional development. The following policy suggestions are discussed: (a) macro level: to develop the national framework of teacher ICT competencies and competency-based teacher training, (b) meso-level: to promote teacher communities of practices and school-based research programs, and (c) micro-level: to redesign teacher professional development programs to help teachers better understand the complex relationships between content, pedagogy, and technology, beyond learning about basic ICT literacy skills. This study contributes to the understanding of how ODA projects can approach the issue of teacher ICT capacity building at multiple levels.

BERT-Based Logits Ensemble Model for Gender Bias and Hate Speech Detection

  • Malicious hate speech and gender bias comments are common in online communities, causing social problems in our society. Gender bias and hate speech detection has been investigated. However, it is difficult because there are diverse ways to express them in words. To solve this problem, we attempted to detect malicious comments in a Korean hate speech dataset constructed in 2020. We explored bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT)-based deep learning models utilizing hyperparameter tuning, data sampling, and logits ensembles with a label distribution. We evaluated our model in Kaggle competitions for gender bias, general bias, and hate speech detection. For gender bias detection, an F1-score of 0.7711 was achieved using an ensemble of the Soongsil-BERT and KcELECTRA models. The general bias task included the gender bias task, and the ensemble model achieved the best F1-score of 0.7166.

Disaster prevention as community education: From the viewpoint of activity theory

  • There are many social issues that should be solved through activity in the local community, such as community development, social service, environmental protection and disaster prevention. Despite a large number of activities, they are not always effective. In this investigation, we examine some alternative approaches to disaster prevention in local communities based on Japanese research and practices. Activity theory (Engestr öm, 1987) was adopted as a theoretical viewpoint. Implications for community education, which is another important issue in the community, are also discussed.

  • Rank learning and processing have gained much attention in the IR and data mining communities for the last decade. While other data mining techniques such as classification and regression have been actively researched to interoperate with RDBMS by using the tightly coupled or loose coupling approaches, ranking has been researched independently without integrating into RDBMS. This paper proposes a tightly coupled integration of the Ranking SVM into MySQL in order to perform the rank learning task efficiently within the RDBMS. We implemented new SQL commands for learning ranking functions and predicting ranking scores. We evaluated our tightly coupled integration of Ranking SVM by comparing it to a loose coupling implementation. The experiment results show that our approach has a performance improvement of $10{\sim}40%$ in the training phase and 60% in the prediction phase.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the potential of the Social Network Analysis as an analytical tool for scientific investigation of learner-learner, or learner-tutor interaction within a Computer Supported Corporative Learning (CSCL) environment. Theoretical and methodological implication of the Social Network Analysis had been discussed. Following theoretical analysis, an exploratory empirical study was conducted to test statistical correlation between traditional performance measures such as achievement and team contribution index, and the centrality measure, one of the many quantitative measures the Social Network Analysis provides. Results indicate the centrality measure was correlated with the higher order teaming performance and the peer-evaluated contribution indices. An interpretation of the results and their implication to instructional design theory and practices were provided along with some suggestions for future research.

  • Water flow in rivers during flood season can be 10 to 100 fold higher than normal seasons (low precipitation) in Japan and predicting flood runoff is essential for operating reservoirs with discharging gates. Abundant experiences and knowledge are requisites for operators to be able to make efficient decisions at work. This research investigated a method to transfer technical knowledge by acquiring skills and knowledge from actual dam operators and by using the information to construct an educational training system. The purpose of the research was to enable the execution of a secure and rational reservoir operation during flood period. The educational training system for reservoir operation was developed with the focuses on acquiring knowledge on hydraulics and hydrology and learning about decision making related to the reservoir operation as well as the timing of control. The system is capable of conducting education that corresponds to individual levels in each location. Of the educational training methods, a lecture method that uses textbooks is effective for the understanding of basic knowledge and concepts while a training method that uses a simulation device is essential for the practice of advanced and specialized procedures in specific fields. Simulation devices are used in operational training for airplane flight and driving cars and trains. The educational system presented here was designed to provide further assistance to those who have acquired basic knowledge and concepts through textbooks and also to at low them to perform the satisfactory operation of dam equipment. Our research proposes a method which can realize a system to acquire technical skills-the skills which are the foundation of technical knowledge and operation.
