  • The amount of electric furnace dust has been steadily increasing due to the increase of iron scraps which are usually recycled by electric furnace melting process. To date, this electric furnace dust has usually been treated by landfilling, however, because of shortage of landfill sites and heavy metal leaching more desirable treatment schemes are urgently needed. Among several possible schemes for the proper treatment of electric furnace dust, its recycling can be said to be most desirable. In present study, the triboelectrostatic separation of zinc and zinc-containing components from electric furnace dust was attempted based on its physicochemical properties such as particle shape, size distribution, and chemical assay. The dust was found to be mixed with spherical and non-spherical shaped particles and its major component materials were $ZnFe_2$$O_4$, ZnO, Fe, Zn, and FeO. The content of zinc-containing components in the entire dust was observed to be in the range of 15~30 wt%, which reasonably justified that zinc is recyclable. The triboelectrostatic characteristic of each component material was found to be different each other since their work functions were different, and based on this characteristic zinc and zinc-containing component could be flirty separated from the dust. After selecting a proper tribo-elec-trification material, the separation features of zinc and zinc-containing component were examined by taking the distance of electrodes, electric field strength, and scavenging as the experimental variables. The highest zinc-content obtained under the optimal separating condition was found to be up to 50wt%.

  • In this study, Li powder was recovered from the by-product of LNO ($Li_2NiO_2$) process, which is the positive electrode active material of waste lithium ion battery, through the $CO_2$ thermal reaction process. In the process of recovering Li powder, the $CO_2$ injection amount is 300 cc/min. The $Li_2NiO_2$ award was phase-separated into the $Li_2CO_3$ phase and the NiO phase by holding at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 min. After this, the collected sample:distilled water = 1:50 weight ratio, and after leaching, the solution was subjected to vacuum filtration to recover $Li_2CO_3$ from the solution, and the NiO powder was recovered. In order to increase the purity of Ni, it was maintained in $H_2$ atmosphere for 3 hours to reduce NiO to Ni. Through the above-mentioned steps, the purity of Li was 2290 ppm and the recovery was 92.74% from the solution, and Ni was finally produced 90.1% purity, 92.6% recovery.

  • In this study, the precipitation of rare earth-sodium sulfate with sodium sulfate was conducted in order to separate rare earth from Fe in rare earth sulfate solution. Neodymium (Nd) was easily precipitated as Nd-sulfate salt with sodium sulfate, on the other hand, excessive sodium sulfate was needed for the precipitation of Dy-sulfate salt. Also neodymium not only promoted the precipitation of dysprosium sulfate salt but also increased recovery of dysprosium sulfate salt in sulfuric acid solution. At the condition of $60^{\circ}C$ precipitation temperature, 3 h reaction time, 7 equivalents sodium sulfate, the recovery of neodymium and dysprosium sulfate salt was 99.7% and 94.3% respectively from the sulfuric acid solution containing Nd of 23.39 mg/ml and Dy of 8.67 mg/ml. Lastly, from the results of separation of Dy to Nd by the method of sulfate double salt, the effect of salting out with NaCl is important to increase the grade of Dy, and 98.7% of Dy grade could be obtained in this study.

  • A novel approach is presented to address issues associated with the use of strong acidic solutions for the leaching of magnesium oxide (MgO) from spent magnesia-carbon refractories. An ultrasonic flotation and separation process is employed, with a mildly acidic solvent, acetic acid, used to selectively chelate MgO from the spent refractories. When using 2 M acetic acid as a solvent, the recovery of the graphite exhibited 99.7 % with high purity of 72.7 %, showing a significant improvement compared to using water as the solvent. Furthermore, the technology presented in this study offers a method for producing magnesium acetate through the reaction of MgO in spent refractory with acetic acid, providing a means for the purification and separation of graphite.

  • In most agricultural soils, ammonium ($NH_4{^+}$) from fertilizer is quickly converted to nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) by the process of nitrification which is crucial to the efficiency of N fertilizers and their impact on the environment. The salinity significantly affects efficiency of N fertilizer in reclaimed tidal soil, and the soil pH may influence the conversion rate of ammonium to nitrate and ultimately affect nitrogen losses from the soil profile. Several results suggest that pH has important effects on recovery of fall-applied N in the spring if field conditions are favorable for leaching and denitrification except that effects of soil pH are not serious under unfavorable conditions for N loss by these mechanisms. Soil pH, therefore, deserves attention as an important factor in the newly reclaimed tidal soils with applying N. However, fate of N studies in a newly reclaimed tidal soils have been rarely studied, especially under the conditions of saline-sodic and high pH. Therefore, understanding the fate of nitrogen species transformed from urea treated into the reclaimed tidal soil is important for nutrient management and environmental quality. In this article, we reviewed yields of rice and fate of nitrogen with respect to the properties of reclaimed tidal soils.

  • With rapid increasing production and installation, recycling of photovoltaic modules has become the main issue. According to the research, the accumulation of waste modules will reach to 8600 tons in 2030. Moreover, Crystalline-silicon (c-Si) Photovoltaic modules account for more than 90% of the waste. C-Si PV modules contain 1.3% of weight of photovoltaic ribbon inside which contains the most of lead, tin and copper in the PV modules, which would cause environmental and humility problem. This study provided a valuable metal separation process for PV ribbons. Ribbons content 82.1% of Cu, 8.9% of Sn, 5.2% of Pb, and 3.1% of Ag. All of them were leached by 3M of hydrochloric acid in the optimal condition. Ag was halogenated to AgCl and precipitated. Cu ion was extracted and separated from Pb and Sn by Lix984N then stripped by 3M H2SO4. The effect of the optimal parameters of extraction was also studied in this essay. The maximum extraction efficiency of Cu ion was 99.64%. The separation condition of Pb and Sn were obtained by adjusting the pH value to 4 thought ammonia to precipitate and separate Pb and Sn. The recovery of Pb and Sn can reach 99%.

  • Recycling process of iron should be developed for efficient recovery of neodymium(Nd), rare metal, from acid-leaching solution of neodymium magnet. In this study, $FeCl_3$ solution as iron source was used for synthesis of iron nanoparticle with the condition of various factors, etc, reductant, surfactant. $Na_4O_7P_2$ and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) as surfactants, $NaBH_4$ as reductant, and palladium chloride($PdCl_2$) as a nucleation seed were used. Iron powder was analyzed with instruments of XRD, SEM and PSA for measuring shape and size. Iron nanoparticles were made at the ratio of 1 : 5(Fe (III) : $NaBH_4$) after 30 min of reduction time. Size and shape of iron particles synthesized were round-form and 50 nm ~ 100 nm size. Zeta-potential of iron at the 100 mg/L of $Na_4O_7P_2$ was negative value, which is good for dispersion of metal particle. When $Na_4O_7P_2$(100 mg/L), PVP($FeCl_3$ : PVP = 1 : 4, w/w) and Pd($FeCl_3$ : $PdCl_2$ = 1 : 0.001, w/w) were used, iron nanoparticles which are round-shape, well-dispersed, near 100 nm-sized can be made.

  • A study on the solvent extraction for the separation and recovery of Ni and Li from the leaching solution of active cathode materials of Li-ion batteries was investigated using PC88A(2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester). The experimental parameters, such as the pH of the solution, concentration of extractant and phase ratio were observed. Experimental results showed that the extraction percent of Ni and Li and separation factor of Ni/Li were increased with increasing the equilibrium pH. More than 99.4% of Ni and 28.7% of Li were extracted in eq. pH 8.5 by 25% PC88A and the separation factor of Ni/Li was 411.6. From the analysis of McCabe-Thiele diagram, 99% of Ni was extracted by three extraction stages at phase ratio(A/O) of 1.5. Stripping of Ni and Li from the loaded organic phases can be accomplished by sulfuric acid as a stripping reagent and 50-60g/L of $H_2SO_4$ was effective for the stripping of Ni.

  • A lot of water soluble proteins and lipids are released from minced mackerel meat and lost into the washing waste during the leaching process of Kamaboko or surimi manufacture. The removed proteins and lipids are not only an edible things but also a big burden for treating the wastewater. In order to recover the proteins from the effluent and to use as food stuff, the "pH-shifting" treatment, a modified isoelectric point precipitation method, was tried. This method is based on a myogen-aggregation phenomenon, which occurs when a solution of sarcoplasmic proteins is acidified or alkalified beyond the critical pH zone of 2∼3 or 12∼13 respectively and then neutralized. The maximum amount of precipitation was obtained by shifting the pH of the wastewater from original pH to isoelectric point (pH 4) or alkali pH 12 and then changing to neutral pH. The precipitates were easily collected by filteration or centrifuging at 10,000rpm. The oils which were only floating in the washing wastewater are easily recovered by seperating with oil separator after pouring. The recovered proteins were slightly denaturated during this pH shifting precipitation process, while the composition of amino acids was good balance as a food.

  • In this study, factors affecting the adsorption reaction for the separation/recovery of V and W using Lewatit monoplus MP 600, a strong basic anion exchange resin, from the leachate obtained through the soda roasting-water leaching process from the spent SCR DeNOX catalyst investigated and the adsorption mechanism was discussed based on the results. In the case of the mixed solution of V and W, both ions showed a high adsorption ratio at pH 2-6, but the adsorption of W was greatly reduced at pH 8. In the adsorption isothermal experiment, both V and W were fitted well at the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the reaction kinetics were fitted well at pseudo-second-order. As a result of conducting an adsorption experiment by adjusting the pH with H2SO4 to remove Si, which inhibits the adsorption of V and W from the leachate, the lowest W adsorption ratio was shown at pH 8.5. Desorption of W was hardly achieved in strongly acidic solutions, and desorption of V was well performed in both strongly acidic and strongly basic solutions.
