  • The purpose of this study is to develop geostatistical methods for selection of prospective areas of polymetallic nodule deposits in KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area of the North-East Pacific Ocean. In this study $110{\times}165$ grid system was used, and each node represents the center of an estimated block of $1km{\times}1km$. The ordinary kriging was applied to SeaBeam2000 data in order to evaluate the bathymetry. A structural analysis (variogram) of the bathymetry data was carried out for constructing digital terrain model (DTM) and the maximum slopes of the bathymetry were calculated by DTM data. The above method can be used to solve the problem that is resulted from the lack of theory of a change of support model for the maximum slope of the bathymetry. The ordinary kriging and the indicator kriging were used to evaluate the nodule abundance, and the different two kriging methods were compared to evaluate the accuracy for the estimation of the nodule abundance. It has been shown that indicator kriging was better estimation tool than the ordinary kriging. The overlay map is presented for the selection of potentially minable sites by combining the two indicator maps of the nodule abundance and the maximum slope of bathymetry. This overlay map could be utilized to establish follow-up survey and to investigate the potentially minable sites in the KODOS area.

  • For improving the seismic performance of the nuclear power plant (NPP) piping system, attempts have been made to apply a dynamic absorber (DA). However, the current piping DA design method is limited because it cannot provide the globally optimum values for the target design seismic loading. Therefore, this study proposes a seismic time history analysis-based DA optimal design method for piping. To this end, the Kriging approach is introduced to reduce the numerical cost required for seismic time history analyses. The appropriate design of the experiment method is used to increase the efficiency in securing response data. A gradient-based method is used to efficiently deal with the multi-dimensional unconstrained optimization problem of the DA optimal design. As a result, the proposed method showed an excellent response reduction effect in several responses compared to other optimal design methods. The proposed method showed that the average response reduction rate was about 9% less at the maximum acceleration, about 5% less at the maximum value of the response spectrum, about 9% less at the maximum relative displacement, and about 4% less at the maximum combined stress compared to existing optimal design methods. Therefore, the proposed method enables an effective optimal DA design method for mitigating seismic response in NPP piping in the future.

  • Many methods for reliability analysis have been studied and one of them, a moment method, has the advantage that it doesn't require sensitivities of performance functions. The moment method for reliability analysis requires the first four moments of a performance function and then Pearson system is used for the probability of failure where the accuracy of the probability of failure greatly depends on that of the first four moments. But it is generally impossible to assess them analytically for multidimensional functions, and numerical integration is mainly used to estimate the moment. However, numerical integration requires many function evaluations and in case of involving finite element analyses, the calculation of the first fo 따 moments is very time-consuming. To solve the problem, this research proposes a new method of approximating the first four moments based on kriging metamodel. The proposed method substitutes the kriging metamodel for the performance function and can also evaluate the accuracy of the calculated moments adjusting the approximation range. Numerical examples show the proposed method can approximate the moments accurately with the less function evaluations and evaluate the accuracy of the calculated moments.

  • Gradually engineering designers are determined based on computer simulations. Modeling of the computer simulation however is too expensive and time consuming in a complicate system. Thus, designers often use approximation models called metamodels, which represent approximately the relations between design and response variables. There arc general metamodels such as response surface model and kriging metamodel. Response surface model is easy to obtain and provides explicit function. but it is not suitable for highly nonlinear and large scaled problems. For complicate case, we may use kriging model that employs an interpolation scheme developed in the fields of spatial statistics and geostatistics. This class of into interpolating model has flexibility to model response data with multiple local extreme. In this study. metamodeling techniques are adopted to carry out the shape optimization of a funnel of Cathode Ray Tube. which finds the shape minimizing the local maximum principal stress Optimum designs using two metamodels are compared and proper metamodel is recommended based on this research.

  • A current trend of design methodologies is to make engineers objectify or automate the decision-making process. Numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, the Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. To obtain the target performance with the maximum robustness is the main functional requirement of a mechanical system. In this research, a design procedure for global robust optimization is developed based on the kriging and global optimization approaches. The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the function. Robustness is determined by the DACE model to reduce real function calculations. The simulated annealing algorithm of global optimization methods is adopted to determine the global robust design of a surrogated model. As the postprocess, the first order second-moment approximation method is applied to refine the robust optimum. The mathematical problems and the MEMS design problem are investigated to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • Soil contaminated with heavy metals from artisanal gold mining in Anka Local Government Area in Northwestern Nigeria was investigated to evaluate the human health risk as a result of heavy metals. Measured concentration of heavy metals and exposure parameters were used to estimate human carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk. GIS-based Kriging method was utilized to create a prediction maps of human health risks and probability maps of heavy metals concentrations exceeding their threshold limits. Hazard index calculation showed that 21 out of 23 locations are posing non-cancer risk for children. Adults and children are at high cancer risk in all locations as the total cancer risk exceeded $1{\times}10^{-6}$ (the lower limit CTR value). Kriging model showed that only a very small area in Anka has a hazard index of less than unity and cumulative target risk of less than $1{\times}10^{-4}$, indicating a significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children. The probability of heavy metals to exceed their threshold concentrations around the study area was also found to be high.

  • To provide detailed and appropriate meteorological information in mountainous areas, the Korea Forest Service has established an Automatic Mountain Meteorology Observation Station (AMOS) network in major mountainous regions since 2012, and 464 stations are currently operated. In this study, we proposed an optimal kriging technique with lapse rate correction to produce gridded temperature data suitable for Korean forests using AMOS point observations. First, the outliers of the AMOS temperature data were removed through statistical processing. Then, an optimized theoretical variogram, which best approximates the empirical variogram, was derived to perform the optimal kriging with lapse rate correction. A 500-meter resolution Kriging map for temperature was created to reflect the elevation variations in Korean mountainous terrain. A blind evaluation of the method using a spatially unbiased validation sample showed a correlation coefficient of 0.899 to 0.953 and an error of 0.933 to 1.230℃, indicating a slight accuracy improvement compared to regular kriging without lapse rate correction. However, the critical advantage of the proposed method is that it can appropriately represent the complex terrain of Korean forests, such as local variations in mountainous areas and coastal forests in Gangwon province and topographical differences in Jirisan and Naejangsan and their surrounding forests.

  • It is necessary to develop an integration model which can account for various data acquired at different measurement scales in environmental thematic mapping with high-resolution ground survey data and relatively low-resolution remote sensing data. This paper presents and applies a multi-scale geostatistical methodology for downscaling of thematic maps generated from lowresolution remote sensing data. This methodology extends a traditional ordinary kriging system to a block kriging system which can account for both ground data and remote sensing data which can be regarded as point and block data, respectively. In addition, stochastic simulation based on block kriging is also applied to describe spatial uncertainty attached to the downscaling. Two downscaling experiments including SRTM DEM and MODIS Leaf Area Index (LAI) products were carried out to illustrate the applicability of the geostatistical methodology. Through the experiments, multi-scale geostatistics based on block kriging successfully generated relatively high-resolution thematic maps with reliable accuracy. Especially, it is expected that multiple realizations generated from simulation would be effectively used as input data for investigating the effects of uncertain input data on GIS model outputs.

  • In this study, performance analysis and design optimization is carried out for a multi-rate spring brake system, which is used in a cable ride to stop the arriving passengers in safe and comfortable manner. Mathematical model for the spring is developed toward the objective of minimizing the impact at the arrival while satisfying the constraint of limited distance at the stop. Matlab code is utilized to examine parameters affecting the performance of the brake system. The results are validated by a commercial software RecurDyn. Kriging meta model is used to reduce the computational cost of the analysis. Optimization is conducted by RecurDyn, from which the design parameters are determined that minimizes the impact at the stop.
