  • Many studies on the finite element modeling for bolted joints have proceeded, but the structures with bolted joints are complicated in shape and it is difficult to find out the characteristics according to joint condition. Usually, experimental methods have been used for bolted joint analysis. A reliable and practical finite element modeling technique for structure with bolted joints is very important for engineers in industry. In this study, three kinds of model are presented; a detailed model, a practical model and a simple model. The detailed model is modeled by using 3-D solid element and gap element, and the practical model is modeled by using shell element (a portion of bolt head) and beam element (a portion of bolt body), the simple model is modeled by simplifying practical model without using gap elements. Among these models, the simple model has the least degree of freedom and show the effect of memory reduction of 59%, when compared with the detailed model.

  • Preload of critical engine bolts affects the performance and durability of engines. In modern engines that pursue higher power outputs and which are of lighter weight, it becomes more difficult to select an optimal target preload in consideration of various factors such as the role and structural characteristics of joint members, joint load, and fatigue durability of bolts and joint members. A procedure to select the bolt preload using computer-aided engineering technology, especially the finite element method, has been developed. The procedure is illustrated with connecting-rod bolts for which an appropriate preload is known. The selection criteria of target preload and the finite element modeling technique for connecting-rod bolts are also explained.

  • Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave which makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis which is used both Love wave dispersion information and Rayleigh wave dispersion information was proposed. Purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different. This analysis technique is consisted of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix determined to the ground system and DLSS(Damped Least Square Solution) as a inversion technique. The application of this analysis was examined through the field test.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and experiments of surface-micromachined aluminum micromirror array with hidden pin-joints. Instead of the conventional elastic spring components as connection between mirror plate and supporting structure, we used pin-joint composed of pin and staples to support the mirror plate. The placement of pin-joint under the mirror plate makes large active surface area possible. These flexureless micromirrors are driven by electrostatic force. As the mirror plate has discrete deflection angles, the device can be ap;lied to adaptive optics and digitally-operating optical applications. Four-level metal structural layers and semi-cured photoresist sacrificial layers were used in the fabrication process and sacrificial layers were removed by oxygen plasma ashing. Static characteristics of fabricated samples were measured and compared with modeling results.

  • A kinematic modeling method is proposed which models the sliding and skidding at the wheels as pseudo joints and utilizes those pseudo joint variables as augmented variables. Kinematic models of various type of wheels are derived based on this modeling method. Then, the transfer method of augmented generalized coordinates is applied to obtain inverse and forward kinematic models of mobile robots. The kinematic models of five different types of planar mobile robots are derided to show the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method.

  • Modeling of photovoltaic power systems is significant to analytically predict its dynamics in practical applications. This paper presents a novel modeling algorithm of such system by using probability and statistic theories. We first establish a linear model basically composed of Fourier parameter sets for mapping the input/output variable of photovoltaic systems. The proposed model includes solar irradiation and ambient temperature of photovoltaic modules as an input vector and the inverter power output is estimated sequentially. We deal with these measurements as random variables and derive a parameter learning algorithm of the model in terms of statistics. Our learning algorithm requires computation of an expectation and joint expectation against solar irradiation and ambient temperature, which are analytically solved from the integral calculus. For testing the proposed modeling algorithm, we utilize realistic measurement data sets obtained from the Seokwang Solar power plant in Youngcheon, Korea. We demonstrate reliability and superiority of the proposed photovoltaic system model by observing error signals between a practical system output and its estimation.

  • Kinematic and kinetic analysis has been performed for Soft Golf swings utilizing realistic three dimensional computer simulations based on three dimensional motion tracking data. Soft Golf is a newly developed recreational sport in South Korea aimed to become a safe and easy-to-learn sport for all ages. The advantage of Soft Golf stems from lighter weight of the club and much larger area of the sweet spot. This paper tries to look into kinematic and kinetic aspects of soft golf swings compared to regular golf swing and find the advantages of lighter Soft Golf clubs. For this purpose, swing motions of older aged participants were captured and kinematic analysis was performed for various kinematic parameters such as club head velocity, joint angular velocity, and joint range of motions as a pilot study. Kinetic analysis was performed by applying kinematic data to computer simulation models constructed from anthropometric database and the measurements from the participants. The simulations were solved using multi-body dynamics solver. Firstly, the kinematic parameters such as joint angles were obtained by solving inverse dynamics problem based on motion tracking data. Secondly, the kinetic parameters such as joint torques were obtained by solving control dynamics problem of making joint torque to follow pre-defined joint angle data. The results showed that mechanical loadings to major joints were reduced with lighter Soft Golf club.
