The purpose of this study is to investigate environmental geochemical characteristics for the acid mine drainage and stream sediments in the abandoned Honam coal mine area. For the chemical analysis, stream winter samples were collected at 54 sites and for the mineralogical and chemical analysis, stream sediments samples were collected at 34 sites. Physical and chemical characteristics of stream water were measured at the site and chemical compositions were analyzed by ICP-AES, ICP-MS and IC. Mineralogical characteristics of stream sediments samples were determined using XRD, SEM and EDS. In physical and chemical properties, stream water shows thats pH 2.85~8.12, Eh -62~215 mV, EC 0.205~146 ms/m, ER 0.234~255 {$\Omega}{\cdot}$m, DO 0.03~1068 mg/L and TDS 10.96~1420mg/L. In chemical compositions, we obtain that K 0.118~3.184 mg/L, Mg 2.1~114.48 mg/L, Ca 2.59~l25.02 mg/L, Al 0.01~44.72 mg/L, Fe 0.108~89.49 mg/L and Na 5.45~125.41 mg/L. Stream sediments are commonly composed of quartz, illite and goethite in the result of x-ray diffraction. After heat treatment at 98$0^{\circ}C$, the hematite peaks are distinctly shown. In consideration of heavy metals (include Fe) for steam sediments, Fe ranges 22575~34713 ppm, Zn 41.66~970.3 ppm, Cd 0.52~52.07 ppm, Cu 1.25~198.5 ppm and Pb 0.43~77.35 ppm.
To investigate the characteristics of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentration in the groundwater around Ulsan, Korea, 168 groundwaters, 12 stream waters, and 6 sewage waters were analyzed for 61 VOCs. Results showed that VOCs were not detected in stream waters and total VOCs concentration in 5 sewage waters was in the range of ND-22.3 ${\mu}$g/L. In 78 groundwater samples more than one VOCs were detected and VOCs concentration of the samples ranged from 0.1 ${\mu}$g/L to 387.1 ${\mu}$g/L. However, VOCs concentration of 66 samples out of 78 samples showed less than 10 ${\mu}$g/L and that of only 6 samples exceeded Korea drinking water limit (KDWL). 42 VOCs detected from the 168 groundwaters were 14 aromatic hydrocarbons out of 25, 27 chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons out of 35, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Detection rate of each VOCs in the groundwaters was as follows: chloroform in 43 samples (25.6%), methylene chloride in 36 samples (21.4%), TCE in 26 samples (15.5%), 1,1-dichloroethane in 19 samples (1.3%), PCE in 16 samples (9.5%), cis-1,2-DCE in 15 samples (8.9%), and toluene in 14 samples (8.3%). Even though VOCs concentration in the groundwaters of the study area is still low, the city is expanding and the drinking water limit is becoming strict, and therefore continuous monitoring is necessary.
This study was conducted to establish the efficient screening system for resistant radish to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani. Five radish cultivars ('Myoungsan', 'Chungdu', 'Jangsaeng', 'Hannongyeorm', and 'Chungsukungjung') showing different degree of resistance to the fungus were selected. And the development of Fusarium wilt of the cultivars according to several conditions such as root wounding, dipping period of roots in spore suspension, inoculum concentration, and incubation temperature to develop the disease was tested. In distinguishing the resistance degree of the radish cultivars to the disease, non-cut roots were more effective than cut roots. And occurrence of Fusarium wilt of the radish plants increased in the proportion to increase of root-dipping period and spore concentration of the fungus. Thus, optimum conditions to differentiate susceptible and resistant cultivars to the disease were root-dipping period of 0.5 hour and spore concentration of $1{\times}10^7\;conidia{\cdot}mL^{-1}$. Disease severity of Fusarium wilt on the cultivars was changed with incubation temperature and the radish seedlings incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ represented the most difference of resistance and susceptibility to Fusarium wilt. From the above results, we suggest that the efficient screening method for resistant radish to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani would be to dip non-cut roots of fourteen-day-old radish seedlings in spore suspension of $1{\times}10^7\;conidia{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ for 0.5 hour and to transplant the inoculated plants to plastic pots with fertilized soil, and then to incubate the radish plants at a temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ for development of Fusarium wilt.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the optimum concentration of the nutrient solution in strawberry 'Sulhyang' with hydroponics in relationship between root activity and nutrient concentrations. Nutrient solutions for strawberry, made by Yamazaki, were supplied EC 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during experiment period. Growth of shoot and root of strawberries grown in visible plastic pot was observed during experiment. Petiole length was longest in plants grown in EC 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, followed by 2.0 and 0.5 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Leaf width was longest in plants grown in EC 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, followed by 0.5 and 2.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight and yield were higher in EC 0.5 and 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ than 2.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment but, soluble solids of the fruit did not show statistical differences among treatments. Shoot dry weight was heaviest in EC 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, followed by 0.5 and 2.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Root dry weight was heavier in EC 0.5 and 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ but significantly light in 2.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. pH of the drainage solution was elevated in low nutrient concentration and lowered in high concentration. Also root activity was high in low nutrient concentration and low in high concentration. As a result, the optimum EC for strawberry 'Sulhyang' was EC 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in this experiment. It was confirmed that there was high relationship between root activity and pH of drainage solution. This result will be utilized as an indicator for strawberry hydroponics.
This study was performed to investigate the role of plant growth substances on the bulbing of cold type of garlic (Allium sativum L. cv. Uiseongmaneul) during long and short day conditions. The change in endogenous plant hormones such as abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and sugar contents in leaf blade and sheath was examined during the growth stage from bulb differentiation (starting at April 16) to bulbing (April 24 to May 18) in cold type of garlic. In the long day condition, ABA contents were higher than short day condition and ABA contents of leaf sheath were higher than leaf blade. ABA contents of growth stage in garlic were not changed during growth stage from April 16 to May 2, however it rapidly increased during bulbing (May 2 to May 18). On the other hand, endogenous JA contents in short day condition did not change in long day condition, it increased from April 16 to May 2. JA contents in the leaf sheath (33.85-62.04 $ng{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW) were higher than leaf blade (15.39-30.04 $ng{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW). These results showed that garlic bulb differentiation and bulbing was induced by JA in leaf sheath. In long day condition, total sugar contents in the leaf blade were increased from bulb differentiation (April 16) to bulbing (May 4) and it was decreased during bulbing (May 4 to May 18) while the total sugar content in leaf sheath were gradually increased from bulb differentiation (April 16) to bulbing (May 18). In conclusion, our results showed that there is a significant correlation between the bulb development of garlic and hormonal content in the leaf sheath.

Many pitchers suffer from various types of injury (distortion, sprain and so on). The rate of injury is increased if there are differences in strength between the extensor and flexor muscles when a joint movement is performed with maximum speed. However, there has been insufficient research into the injury caused by strength differences between the extensor and flexor muscles. Thus, the purpose of the study was to examine the effects of elbow ulnar collateral ligament injury on the maximal isometric strength in young baseball pitchers. The data collection was conducted for 2 weeks. The subjects (n=36) who participated in this study were placed into either the injury group (n = 18, IG) or normal group (n = 18, NG). The maximal isometric strength for the pectoralis major (PM), infraspintus (I), biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), flexor carpi radialis (ECR) and extensor carpi radialis (FCR) muscles were determined by an isometric strength machine (K-DFX) and then the differences in strength were calculated by muscle group. All of the data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 with the independent t-test. In the results, the maximal isometric strengths in the IG for the I (p=0.035), BB (p=0.031) and TB (p=0.041) were significantly lower than those in the NG, while that for the ECR (p=0.047) was significantly greater. In addition, the differences of the maximal isometric strength between the PM and I (p = 0.008), BB and TB (p = 0.002), and FCR and ECR (p = 0.032) in the IG were significantly greater than those in the NG. In conclusion, the differences in muscle strengths of the subjects in the IG were greater than those in the NG, which suggests that they might have a higher injury rate in the future. However, they might be able to recover from their injury and achieve better performance if the differences in strength were reduced by training.

Several foundation soil conditions below a homogeneous sand slope were assumed and slope stability analyses were conducted to determine the soil condition, in which a stabilizing pile can be used to increase the factor of safety against sliding. The assumed heights of the sand slope were 5m and 10m. For a 5m slope height, a stabilizing pile can be used in the foundation soil with a $15^{\circ}$ internal friction angle and a cohesion of 10kPa. For a 10m slope height, a stabilizing pile can be used in the foundation soil with a $20^{\circ}$ internal friction angle and a cohesion of 10kPa and a stabilizing pile can be used in the foundation soil with a $0^{\circ}$ internal friction angle and 40kPa, 45kPa and 50kPa of cohesion. According to the analysis results of stabilizing pile-reinforced foundation soil, the length of the stabilizing pile and magnitude of the maximum bending moment were strongly affected by the internal friction angle of the foundation soil. The lengths of stabilizing pile, for an internal friction angle of $0^{\circ}$ were 4.6, 8.0 times greater than those with an internal friction angle of $5^{\circ}$. The magnitude of the maximum bending moment of the stabilizing pile for an internal friction angle of $0^{\circ}$ was 24.6 times greater than that for an internal friction angle of $5^{\circ}$. Practically, a stabilizing pile cannot be used for foundation soil with an internal friction angle of $0^{\circ}$. Considering the results derived from this study, the effects of a stabilizing pile can be maximized for soft foundation soil that is embanked with a slow construction speed.

Objectives : An in vitro biomechanical study of posterior lumbar interbody fusion(PLIF) with threaded cage using two different approaches was performed on eighteen functional spinal units of bovine lumbar spines. The purpose of this study was to compare the segmental stiffnesses among PLIF with one long posterolateral cage, PLIF with one long posterolateral cage and simultaneous facet joint fixation, and PLIF with two posterior cages. Methods : Eighteen bovine lumbar functional spinal units were divided into three groups. All specimens were tested intact and with cage insertion. Group 1(n=12) had a long threaded cage($15{\times}36mm$) inserted posterolaterally and oriented counter anterolaterally on the left side by posterior approach with left unilateral facetectomy. Group 2(n=6) had two regular length cages($15{\times}24mm$) inserted posteriorly with bilateral facetectomy. Six specimens from group 1 were then retested after unilateral facet joint screw fixation in neutral(group 3). Likewise, the other six specimens from group 1 were retested after fixation with a facet joint screw in an extended position(group 4). Nondestructive tests were performed in pure compression, flexion, extension, lateral bending, and torsion. Results : PLIF with a single cage, group 1, had a significantly higher stiffnesses than PLIF with two cages, group 2, in left and right torsion(p<0.05). Group 1 showed higher stiffness values than group 2 in pure compression, flexion, left and right bending but were not significantly different. Group 3 showed a significant increase in stiffness in comparison to group 1 for pure compression, extension, left bending and right torsion(p<0.05). For group 4, the stiffness significantly increased in comparison to group 1 for extension, flexion and right torsion(p<0.05). Although there was no significant difference between groups 3 and 4, group 4 had increased stiffness in extension, flexion, right bending and torsion. Conclusion : Posterior lumbar interbody fusion with a single long threaded cage inserted posterolaterally with unilateral facetectomy enables sufficient decompression while maintaining a majority of the posterior elements. In combination with a facet joint screw fixation, adequate postoperative stability can be achieved. We suggest that posterolateral insertion of a long threaded cage is biomechanically an ideal alternative to PLIF.

In order to examine the immunoresponse of host cells to Enterococcus faecalis, this in vitro study monitored the production of Interleukin-2 (IL-2), Interleukin-4 (IL-4) and Transforming growth factor-$\beta1\;(TGF-\beta1)$ in human lymphocytes. Lymphocytes were activated with PHA in the presence or abscence of sonicated extracts of E. Faecalis (SEF) and further incubated for 72 hours. The level of each cytokine was measured by ELISA. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test (P < 0.05). PHA-activated group did exhibit higher level of IL-2 and IL-4 than untreated control group. The levels of expression of both cytokines were significantly decreased following the treatment of high (25 ${\mu}g/ml$) and medium concentration (12.5 ${\mu}g/ml$)) of SEF (P > 0.05) than those of PHA activated group. But low concentration (5 ${\mu}g/ml$)) of SEF showed th similar level of IL-2 and IL-4 production as those of PHA activated group. $TGF-\beta1$ was unaffected by SEF treatment. These results suggested that E. faecalis may suppress IL-2 and IL-4 production by lymphocytes and this could be one of possible factors why E. faecalis are found frequently in the teeth with failed endodontic treatment.

The purpose of this study is to attempt new analysis on Soswaewon Garden(瀟灑園) where is Korea's traditional garden, focusing on which the tendency of its change is a relational-formation tool similar to the Eastern Mode of Thought, with paying attention to conversion as the new view of world. Accordingly, the aim is to reanalyze by connecting with Soswaewon Garden based on the theory of complexity, which tries to look at the whole through relationship rather than characteristics in individual components. Given summarizing findings, those are as follows. First, it was found that complexity shown in space and open system of physical dimension was characterized by 'event(situation)', 'non-determination' and 'homogeneous relationships between part and whole', and a variety of techniques introduced the nature positively. In particular, it was found that there were many cases of topographic usage, since the Soswaewon Garden selected its construction site proactively and was a product from architectural works in compliance with a given flow of natural topography. This has a nature of open text in the situation of emergent behaviors. Second, it was found that complexity shown in experiences and open system on the invisible dimension was characterized primarily by 'event(situation)' and 'relationships of interactive response between actors and environment', and various techniques appeared as a space for interactive combination of nature and daily experiences. This is typical of bilateral harmony based on interactions between subject and object, and between mankind and nature, and becomes also a space to accommodate temporary emergent behaviors in our life. Third, the compositional elements are reconstituted as space of organic property with dismantling steady relations. Especially, 'Soswaewon Garden's 48 poems(瀟灑園四十八詠)' will be the origin of the emotionally spatial experience to the current performers. Ultimately, the performer in the space of Soswaewon Garden simultaneously becomes a creator of space, and will generate new space with intertextuality with environment. Therefore, Soswaewon Garden becomes a place of binding me and the other together while maintaining mutual relationship based on organic thinking between a human being and nature and between the whole and a part.
