  • This research was performed to evaluate the efficacy of phosphate removal from wastewater by surface-modified wood powder and to clarify the removal mechanisms. In this work, Pinus rigida which is abundant in Korea and has little economic value was used in preparation of the wood powder as a sorbent material. The experiments were carried out in 2 phases, isothermal adsorption test and column test. The results of adsorption test fitted well both the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal equations. Adsorption capacity was highest with the bark powder followed by the mixed powder(50% bark powder and 50% woody powder) and woody powder. Phosphate removal efficiency was as high as 98% at initial phosphate concentration of 50mg/L. Specific surface area of the powder increased following the experiment and phosphate removal was speculated to occur through adsorption mechanism. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDXA) revealed that the phosphate adsorbed onto the surface of the powder was in the form of strengite($FePO_{4}$).

  • As a basic experiment to develope biological pretreatment proces~ in water treatment, the experiments on biodegradability and isothermal adsorption of activated carbon were performed on refractories such as humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS which caused the problems in drinking water treatment. Also, the treatabilities on humic acid were examined in the continuous flow type reactors. The removal efficiencies of humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS in the biodegradable experiments for 5 days were 20.1%, 73.4%, 91.7% and 97.5%, respectively. In the isothermal adsorption test of refractories on activated carbon to be used as a media in the continuous flow type reactors, ABS and phenol are adsorbed easily, but humic acid and $NH_3-N$ are difficult to be done. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in granular activated carbon(GAC) reactor were about 7-8% higher than in biological activated carbon(BAC) reactor. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in biological fluidized bed(BFB) reactor were about 30% in GAC media, but were almost zero in sea sand media.

  • Adsorption of Congo Red (CR) from dye-containing effluents using modified bentonite (MB) has been investigated here. Isothermal studies were conducted to ascertain maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. MB exhibited superior adsorption capacity compared to other low-cost adsorbents. Experimental data fitted the Langmuir isotherm better, indicating monolayer coverage of CR on MB. The feasibility of the process was measured in terms of separation factor $R_L$. The values of Gibbs free energy, entropy and enthalpy were calculated from the thermodynamics of the process. Adsorption was feasible and spontaneous, being endothermic. Analytical techniques including SEM, EDS, FTIR and XRD were applied to characterize MB and also to provide conclusive proof of the accumulation of CR on to MB.

  • In order to study the transport behavior of tripolyphosphate (TPP) in aqueous solutions, the adsorption process of TPP on synthetic goethite, which exists stably in supergene environment, has been systematically studied. The adsorption properties under different conditions (pH, electrolyte presence, and temperature) were investigated. The adsorption of TPP in the presence of humic acid (HA)/fulvic acid (FA) has also been discussed in this paper. The results indicated that the adsorption capacity quickly increased within the first hour and equilibrium was reached within 24 h. The adsorption capacity decreased from 1.98 to 0.27 mg·g-1 upon increasing the pH from 8.5 to 11.0, whereas the adsorption of TPP on goethite hardly changed with increasing electrolyte concentration. The results of analysis of the kinetic and isothermal models showed that the adsorption was more in accord with the pseudo second-order equation and Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity decreased obviously regardless of the order of addition of TPP, HA, and goethite. Subsequent addition of FA led to a large increase in the adsorption capacity, which might be attributed to the adsorption ability of FA. According to the predictions of the kinetic and isothermal models and the spectroscopic evidence (X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM)), the adsorption mechanism may be mainly based on surface complexation and physical adsorption.

  • The purpose of this study was to gain basic information on the characteristics of $CO_2$ adsorption in relation to $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon in a Fixed Bed Reactor. From the results of this study the following conclusions were made: $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon had a longer breakthrough time and more enhanced adsorption capacity than activated carbon alone. When tested with isothermal adsorption and tested for $CO_2$ adsorption the amount of $CO_2$ adsorbed varied with temperature, $CO_2$ inlet concentration, gas flow rate, aspect ratio, etc. Based on the results, when Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Polanyi adsorption isotherms were used for linear regression of isothermal adsorption data, Langmuir adsorption isotherm was the most suitable. And, the optimum condition for $Na_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$ impregnated activated carbon make-up was 1N and $Li_2CO_3$ was 0.1N. It could be concluded that adsorption capacity was decreased with adsorption temperature and increased gas concentration. When the aspect ratio (L/D) was varied 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0, the significant drop of adsorption amount was observed below 1.0 and breakthrough time was shortened with gas flow rate.

  • A study is presented of the adsorption capacity of a number of different activated carbons for hydrogen at 100 bar aad 298 K. The hydrogen adsorption isotherm was measured by isothermal gravimetric analysis, using a microbalance. The effect of activated carbon's porosity on hydrogen adsorption capacity is surveyed. It is concluded that hydrogen adsorption capacity of activated carbon is lineally increased according to the increase of specific surface area and total pore volume, It seems that microporosity is more contributive than mesoporosity. Most of the adsorbed quantity is due to physical adsorption and chemisorption is negligible, In this work, 0.79 wt.% of hydrogen adsorption capacity is reached.

  • The isothermal adsorption, dynamic, and thermodynamic parameters of Acid black (AB) and Quinoline yellow (QY) adsorption by activated carbon were investigated using the initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dyes as adsorption parameters. The adsorption equilibrium data fits the Freundlich isothermal adsorption model, and the calculated Freundlich separation factor values found that activated carbon can effectively remove AB and QY. Comparing the kinetic data showed that the pseudo second order model was within 10% error in the adsorption process. The intraparticle diffusion equation results were divided into two straight lines. Since the slope of the intraparticle diffusion line was smaller than the slope of the boundary layer diffusion line, it was confirmed that intraparticle diffusion was the rate-controlling step. The thermodynamic experiments indicated that the activation energies of AB and QY were 19.87 kJ mol-1 and 14.17 kJ mol-1, which corresponded with the physical adsorption process (5 ~ 40 kJ mol-1). The adsorption reaction was spontaneous because the free energy change in the adsorption of AB and QY by activated carbon was negative from 298 to 318 K. As the temperature increased, the free energy value decreased resulting in higher spontaneity. Adsorption of AB and QY by activated carbon showed the highest adsorption removal rate at pH 3 due to the effect of anions generated by dissociation. The adsorption mechanism was electrostatic attraction.

  • This study examined the dyeability of fabrics dyed with rosemary, mint, sage, and thyme herb extracts. The herb extracts were pulverized and characterized by UV and FT-IR analysis. Dyeing properties of herb colorants on cotton, silk and wool fiber and effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake were compared. The constituents of four different herbs were shown to be similar to each other. The dye uptake of rosemary and sage were shown to be larger than those of mint and thyme regardless of the fiber types. Affinity of herb colorants to protain fibers was higher than to cellulose fiber. Compared with silk and wool, the dyeability of cotton was the worse, the dye uptake of silk and wool fibers were increased along with dyeing time and dyeing temperature. As the dye uptake increased with increasing of the dye concentration, and its isothermal adsorption curves were langmuir type, indicating that ionic bonding was involved in the adsorption of herb colorants to the fibers.

  • The adsorption of Acid Fuchsin (AF) on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated for isothermal adsorption and kinetics and thermodynamic parameters by experimenting with the initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dye as adsorption parameters. In the pH effect experiment, the adsorption of AF on activated carbon showed a bathtub type with increased adsorption at pH 3 and 11. The adsorption equilibrium data of AF fit well with the Freundlich isotherm model, and the calculated separation factor (1/n) value was found in which activated carbon can effectively remove AF. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fits well within 7.88% of the error percent in the adsorption process. According to Weber and Morris's model plot, it was divided into two straight lines. The intraparticle diffusion rate was slow because the stage 2 (intraparticle diffusion) slope was smaller than that of stage 1 (boundary layer diffusion). Therefore, it was confirmed that the intraparticle diffusion was a rate-controlling step. The activation energy of AF (13.00 kJ mol-1) corresponded to the physical adsorption process (5 - 40 kJ mol-1). The free energy change of the AF adsorption by activated carbon showed negative values at 298-318 K. As the spontaneity increased with increasing temperature. The adsorption of AF was an endothermic reaction (ΔH = 22.65 kJ mol-1).

  • Scoria from Jeju-island (Jeju scoria) was converted into zeolitic material (Z-SA) via zeolitification using the fusion/hydrothermal method. Jeju scoria could be synthesized into Z-SA to from a surface covered with Na-A zeolite crystals, which was confirmed through an analysis of X-ray diffraction peak patterns and scanning electron microscopy images. Jeju scoria and Z-SA were employed as adsorbents to evaluate the adsorption rate and adsorption capacities for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions. The adsorption rates and isothermal adsorption capacities could be well fitted by the pseudo-quadratic adsorption kinetics and Langmuir adsorption isotherm, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of Z-SA for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions were found to be 163.36 mg/g and 120.51 mg/g, respectively, using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. When Z-SA is synthesized from Jeju scoria via zeolitification using the fusion/hydrothermal method, Z-SA exhibits an adsorption capacity that is more than approximately 100 times the value exhibited by Jeju scoria. As a result, the synthesized Z-SA was regarded as an effective, economic adsorbent.
